Should pet parents shave their cat's in the summer months?

First let's look at the function of the fur. It keeps cats dry, protects the skin from injuries (such as sunburn), is used in communication (the halloween cat with it's hair raised in fear) and provides sensory input. Along with keeping cats warm, the fur actually helps keep cats cool.

If you have an indoor only cat, you might consider shaving it due to hair matting. Routine brushing helps to remove shed hair and usually keeps mats from developing. If the matting is extreme, consider finding a groomer who has experience handling cats and they can trim your cat's coat. (no shorter that an inch or so.)

So keep brushing and their should be no need for shaving!!

Yes we love the 4th of July and all the fireworks!
However, most of our cats do not.

There are ways to help your cat through this stressful time.

1) You can prepare a room for you and your cat to be in. Close the windows, pull the blinds, and mask the sound of fireworks with the T.V. or white noise and loud enough to drown out the fireworks.

2) The Thundershirt is another option. Compression jackets like the ThunderShirt calm cats by making them feel hugged and secure. It is suggested that you use it before the 4th by putting it on the cat for 20-30 minutes and then taking off for the same time period and then putting it on again for 20-30 minutes.

3) If you are going to be out of town, don’t leave your cat alone during the fireworks. Have your cat sitter, someone your cat is familiar with, come over and be with kitty.

4) Last and most important...don't hold a frightened cat against their will to console them. Cat's know when they want to be held and will let you know.

So enjoy the holiday and take good care of kitty!
