Breaking Baby Mona update -
Both adorable AND interesting!
Mona LOVES playing with her new toy. You may also notice that a salt & pepper pigment has started to appear in her coat! We believe this to be a temporary anomaly known as fever coat (or stress coat).
“This fairly uncommon phenomenon occurs when an adult cat experiences an illness or severe stress that causes a spike in body temperature during pregnancy. During feline gestation, the developing fetus goes through many changes as they grow. Prior to birth, the pigmentation of a kitten’s coat is very sensitive to heat. If a mom cat experiences a fever due to illness or prolonged stress, it has the potential to affect the developing pigment of her kittens’ fur.
Fever coat creates a visually striking coat that presents as silver, grey or cream-colored. It has no negative implications for the kitten’s overall health going forward. Even though their coat pigment did not fully develop in the womb, their coat color is still written in their DNA and will present a little later in the kitten’s life. Fever coat typically resolves around four months of age but can take up to a year in some cases.”
With this new coat developing, Baby Mona continues to be a unique, loving, resilient, vibrant little girl who overcame a very rough start and a wicked, infectious leg wound. While Mona has some residual stiff movement on her injured leg, it has not had a negative impact on her becoming a happy kitten.

Baby Mona update!
You may recall Baby Mona was found by a caring couple who came upon her outside and near death. Upon arrival, Barb took her home for focused care. In Mona’s weakened state, parasites had infested in her leg. She was immediately triaged, and subsequently underwent surgery to correct a gaping hole. She has recovered AMAZINGLY and the wound is healing very well.
Please see the attached video showing her playing, feeling good, and just being adorable. Don’t miss the super cute little “meeews” she makes in the middle. 😊🐈⬛
Thanks to the couple who found her, and to our #amazingcommunity for your continued support that helps us be there for them when they need us the most. 💕
