There are many faces and aspects to the world of rescue. It’s ALMOST as if you need to turn off your emotions at times because when it gets bad…it can go to hell in a handbag real quick.
Today we said goodbye to one of our own. Today we cried. Today we were inconsolable. Today we cursed the people that discarded her as trash and thanked them in the same breath because she was ours.
Carmen was a stray backnin 2021 who had a huge cancerous mass on her when we got wind of her. She had MAJOR anger issues and would bite first and ask questions later.
One of my favorite stories to tell is the day I brought her home. Most married couples consult their spouses BEFORE bringing a dog home. Not me. I simply walked in the door with her and she never left, she was always meant to be a part of our family. And that she was and that is what she will be forever and always.
She had many nicknames. Carmenita, Spicy con salsa, Juanita, boba fat (cause of her slim figure), Boba Nipa and the one we used the most Boba.
She is the poster child of a “discarded” animal. One that was nothing to someone and then became everything to us.
Boba was not an easy integration. It took time for her to trust us and not want to bite us. It took time for her to know we were never going to hurt her and that the worst of her days were a thing of the past. Boba was a prime example of needing to put work, time and love into making her feel safe and secure. She was worth that and so much more.
I’ve often told people that there is no such thing as a “Disney Dog”. The first (or fiftieth) time things get hard, most people want to throw in the towel. If we had done that, we would not have been blessed with our Boba.
I’m asking you all…read this. Memorize this. Live by this. Boba is the perfect example of a pup needing extra time, love and patience.
Up to the very end she operated on her terms. She fought the big C again like absolute hell but ultimately it was too much for her. We had to love her enough to make that decision because no matter how hard it was for us, we had to put her first.
To our sweet Boba…you made us smile, want to pull out our hair at times, invest in a band aid company (early in the beginning), made us laugh and today made us cry. What we wouldn’t give to have you back here with us….
Until we meet again…
