Statement from the Executive Director of the SPCA of Brevard
Dear Supporters and Friends,
As many of you know, our work at the SPCA of Brevard is deeply rooted in our commitment to saving and improving the lives of animals in need. Today, I am reaching out with an important update and a heartfelt request for your help.
Our financial state is unsustainable and requires us to take immediate action. We are forced to acknowledge the need to reduce our animal intake and capacity for care by approximately 50% until we can resolve these issues. This change has also forced us to make the heart wrenching decision to lay off 15% of our dedicated animal care team—individuals who have tirelessly provided love, care, and compassion to animals in our shelter.
Unlike many organizations, the SPCA of Brevard is entirely donor-funded. We receive no financial support from state or local government, nor from any national animal welfare organization. Our lifesaving work is only possible because of the generosity of our community.
We continue to feel the impact of selling our public-facing clinic at the end of 2022, which had been a vital source of revenue supporting our operations. Since then, it has been a monthly struggle to meet our expenses and provide every animal in our care with the support they deserve. To give you an idea of the expenses involved: each dog we prepare for adoption and care for over the course of a month costs us approximately $250, and each cat approximately $170—just for medical needs and food, not including staffing or utilities.
To continue our mission and rebuild our capacity to save more animals, we need your support. Here’s how you can help make a difference:
1. Support our Thrift Stores: Our thrift stores are now our main sources of income. When you shop or donate gently used items, you’re directly funding the care we provide for animals in need.
2. Become a Monthly Hero: If even half of our nearly 50,000 supporters and followers step up and become Monthly Heroes with a gift of just $5, it would give us the consistent, reliable income needed to continue our lifesaving mission at full speed.

Our community has supported us for over 45 years and allowed us to grow to our current capacity for care. We know that with your continued support, we will be able to restore that capacity and remain a vital voice for the animals in Brevard. Thank you for standing with us and supporting our mission to save lives, one animal at a time.
With sincere gratitude,
Susan Naylor
