Today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day. An observance dedicated to improving the lives of dogs, the day spreads the word about the poor conditions of puppy mills. While reputable dog breeders care for the animals they raise, a puppy mill doesn't put the animal's needs first. These dogs often live in poor conditions, and are unhealthy. Additionally, puppy mills don't take into consideration preferred characteristics when breeding. As a result, breeding lines are not well-tracked, and genetic defects develop. The mills remove young from the mothers much too early. Sickness, malnutrition, and behavior issues are common. Often, mills also skimp on vaccines. September is National Service Dog Month, a time devoted to raising awareness and showing appreciation for the extraordinary work service dogs do every day for the people in their care. Join us in celebrating and honoring these special heroes who dedicate their lives to help their human companions.

Service dogs are specially trained to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. They can be trained to retrieve objects, assist with balance, give seizure or diabetic alerts, or assist those with psychiatric disabilities. They also serve our nation’s wounded warriors suffering from conditions including Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury. Service dogs provide companionship while inspiring confidence and they live to serve and assist their handlers. With the help of a service dog, humans can better manage disabilities and live fuller lives.

These special pups exemplify the amazing healing power of the human-animal bond. We all know dogs are a wo/man’s best friend – they are loyal, devoted, loving, dependable and typically cuddly. However, research shows living with a canine companion can also provide physical benefits varying from improved cardiovascular health and increased physical activity to lower cholesterol and decreased blood pressure. They also can give support and a sense of calm for our daily emotional and psychological stresses. This month and every month, we recognize the heroic work of service dogs across the world. 🐕‍🦺💛🐾

The second Sunday every September is, National Pet Memorial Day. Which offers a moment to remember pets who have passed.

Pets play an important role in our lives. Not only are they companions, but pets become part of the family, too. Pets keep us responsible and remind us to play. When we are too serious, they lighten up our lives. Many pets keep us healthy, too.

When we lose a beloved pet, the pain is genuine. Whether furry, feathered, or an uncommon variety, the loss is felt deeply. They become family and a familiar part of our lives. However, everyone mourns differently. Some pet parents plant a memorial. Whether they plant a tree, shrub or perennial flower, the plant offers an annual reminder of their pet. Others may create a stepping stone with a paw print, placing it in a garden. Still, others may create a tattoo of their pet's paw print. These actions offer a tangible way to cope with their grief.

The day also offers an opportunity to remember the pets who've passed through our lives. We remember the companionship and comfort they provided to us. Don’t forget that part of the relationship included care provided by you. Memories replace the empty space left by the loss of a cherished pet. 😇❤️🐾
