🧡💜Platform training💜🧡
Those who do performance work and sports with their dogs know the value of a platform. Their dogs grow to love the platform like this guy who is visiting me right now. He currently has access to my couch, Kuranda beds, memory foam dog bed and fleece mats but still chooses the platform to chew on something.

I find that those who simply train their dog to “place” on the dog bed or mat are really missing out on something. The platform can be a very useful and helpful tool to train your dog to:
•sit and stay in a sit
•sit from a distance
•down and stay in a down
•down from a distance
•stay at your side in heel position
•move out of your way and to your side instead of always standing in front of you
•control dog when guests visit
•create rules and guidelines for fetch or tug games
•keep dog from jumping, barking, and other unwanted behavior
•learn to listen to you and get rewards from you without always being right up next to you
•manage one dog while you are working with another
The list goes on

The pictured platform is manufactured for dog training. However, anything can be constructed and used as long as there is some elevation so that it is very clear to the dog when even one foot steps off the platform.

This very short conversation could save a lot of people a lot of stress and a lot of dogs a lot of stress.

Why some dogs need to be kennel/crate trained. This was a perfectly clean mason jar but the dog had high hopes of counter surfing success. The red is blood.

Puppies need new and changing exposure to sounds, sights, texture under their feet and in their mouths, environments, types of people and how they behave, types of animals and how they behave, types of smells, types of handling.....the list goes on. The more you invest now, the easier your future with your dog will be.

"Because the first three months are the period when sociability
outweighs fear, this is the primary window of opportunity for puppies to adapt to new people, animals, and experiences. Incomplete or improper socialization during this important time
can increase the risk of behavioral problems later in life including fear, avoidance, and/or aggression. Behavioral problems are the greatest threat to the owner-dog bond."

I love how this person has a variety of plans in place, how she practices them in a less distracting environment, and how she recognizes the abilities of the individual she is working with.

This is how a good dog trainer will help you create a training plan for your dog.

This is my boy, Kale who has had way too many encounters with out of control dogs rushing up to him while I am walking him on leash at a public park. He has developed a behavior of becoming very vocal and highly aroused when little dogs come near us. When little dog owners care nothing about their yapping, lunging, harmless, cute fur babies rushing up to other dogs they risk injury to their dogs and to the humans holding onto them. Otherwise, Kale is very chill with little dogs , anxious dogs, and puppies - a kind, gentle trait going back many generations in his lineage Run Labradors

For performance people. I have found that many of the dogs who seem unmotivated during classes, or in the ring tend to get a lot of "obedience commands" during daily life.

Examples:
1. Sit, Stay, (open door), Okay/Free
2. Sit, Stay, (place food bowl down) Okay/Free
3. Sit, Stay, (open car door) Okay/Free/Load Up)Heel (on a walk).
4. Heel (on regular dog walks)
5. Off, Leave It (grabbing items, getting on furniture)

Could one just simply shut/block the door each time the dog advances so that the dog learns to wait for permission?
Could the food bowl just get lifted up each time the dog advances so that the dog learns to wait for permission?
Could the car door be shut/blocked each time the dog advances so that the dog learns to wait for permission?
Could the handler stop/about-turn each time the dog pulls on the leash and wait for the dog to produce slack in the leash without the need to execute "heeling"?
Could the handler be prepared to block the dog as it jumps on the furniture, step on leash or scatter food to prevent the dog from jumping on guests, teach dog to ask permission before grabbing items?

If all this talking and constant commanding works for your team, great! I have found that once my students stop talking so much, their dogs start listening more.

Will your dog move out of your way as you walk about the house? Will your dog wait at the door without being commanded to do so? Will your dog leave food alone if it is left on the countertop or coffee table? Will your dog choose not to jump on guests? Will your dog choose not to bark at every dog it sees pass by your property? These would be skills to practice long before you head out the door into the big distracting world. Why not ask the dog to sit and stay? Your choice, but will your holiday guests say "sit, stay" every time they go through the door? How about the appliance repair person? Or the young child? When a dog learns this type of interaction with the door then the door itself is a signal to the dog to await permission to pass through it.

For those who like to use a harness on their dog, this is very informative. I have seen so many dogs in front-connect harnesses that restrict shoulder motion and might cause joint issues.
