If pulling on the leash causes the handler to follow, even if by only a step or two for the handler to catch their balance, it is likely a dog will continue pulling on the leash in the future.

When would this dog decide that pulling on the leash would be futile? Even with nearby distractions.

My three-year-old Kale earned his AKC Junior Hunting Retriever title at the Labrador Retriever Club National in Missouri last weekend. 🥰
He is a true example of a dog who needed to mature before he could stay on task when working around other dogs…..and female dogs in season.

There was a six month old Lab who also earned a title with ease. Perhaps that had something to do with a different level of hormones. Or maybe that dog didn’t have such big emotions about being restrained on a leash when around other dogs.

They are all so different and it is an ever-changing dynamic that challenges each handler on a daily basis and with each new dog they train.

Every dog is different in how they navigate through their environments. These are just a FEW suggestions to help you improve your communication with your dog.

I have witnessed people, including myself, causing their dogs to be more reactive and aroused by interfering with the dog’s need to interpret the environment.

Some common signs of stress and arousal in dogs are licking lips, shaking off, increasing or decreasing body movement, hard stares, avoiding eye contact.

In this video my dogs are shaking off and licking lips. If I added my voice into this scenario it would likely cause more arousal as they would have the added pressure of “obeying” or “pleasing” me…..depends on the individual dog.

If their arousal had escalated I would then decide to distract them or move physically separate them from the cat but talking to them (like most people do) would never be my go to reaction.

BARRIERS⭐️
The next time you need to introduce your dog to something new, consider using a barrier to help the dog acclimate. In this video the chicken is fearless and the dogs can inspect it closer without me worrying about the chicken’s safety and without me needing to interact with the dogs.

A few other scenarios:
- Visitor at the door. Your dog can inspect your visitor before having contact.
- Vacuum cleaner. Your dog can get used to it turned off or on with no threat of attack.
- New pets to the house (as in this video).
