We picked her up yesterday, along with 7 other cats from the hoarding house in Sebring. Last night and this morning she was growling at us, but now she’s letting us pet her…even if she won’t look us in the eye. We’ll get there.

✨💖 Meet Jill 💖✨

Hi there, future family! I’m a 1-year-old Cur mix (maybe some Retriever and/or Hound as well) and am about 46 lbs. I’m cat friendly (curious, will try to play sometimes). I’m very friendly, athletic, playful, affectionate, and have a high energy level. I really like going for walks (will get distracted by squirrels and lizards) and car rides and love splashing around in the sun shelf of the pool. I enjoy meeting new people and friendly dogs, whether on walks in the neighborhood or park trails, at outdoor festivals or shopping at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I like durable chew toys, balls, rope toys, tug-of-war.

I will need a fenced yard in my forever home. While I like going for walks, with my energy level and need for plenty of daily exercise, I need a safe place to run and play. A few walks a day are great and needed but walks alone don’t tire me out. 😊 When I am tired out, I love belly rubs and snuggling next to you on the couch. I am potty trained. I sleep all night on my dog bed in my foster parents’ room. I don’t like being crated. I am used to having someone home more often than not. I leave most things alone in the house though I may occasionally find something to chew on. I may bark at times when I hear an unfamiliar sound, so I need a home with no shared walls. If you have a friendly, playful dog in the home (meet and greet required), that would be great (and would help me get my energy out) but not required.

Due to my high energy level and my tendency to forget my size sometimes, a home with kids that are 8+ is recommended. I'm independent, loving, confident, curious, and loyal. I promise to be your best friend, your loyal companion, and your source of endless entertainment. So, why not add a little magic to your life and adopt me? Let's make memories together!

HELP!!!

Friends, we had an unexpected rescue today and as a result, our shelter is bursting at the seems! We are bringing in 12 new dogs and puppies from Highlands County Animal Services, Humane Society of Highlands County and the Hardee County Clinic.

The team will be arriving to our shelter tonight at 6pm. Can you foster? If you currently have a dog, please bring them for the meet and greet. Help us help them!

Meet Princess

Princess has been in one of our awesome foster homes and here is what they had to say about her Royal highness…

“Princess is a such a sweet girl, she really is a little princess but this girl has some s***k! She a 4.5 month lab mix, with so much love to give!

She is very energetic, loves to play with her foster sister and brother pup, she is assertive and definitely holds her own. She LOVES food and is super smart, she’s picking up commands fairly quickly… especially when food is involved!!! She loves to play with toys and really enjoys being outside, typically the last one to come inside and that also involves a treat. She’s smart and has figured out how to trick me to give her more treats! Princess is also very affectionate and after a good play session she loves to climb in my lap or by me on the couch for a solid snooze fest.

She’s crate trained however she isn’t the biggest fan of being left out of the party and will make noise to make sure you know! She’ll quickly calm down after she gets her point across… I’ve found a blanket over the crate makes that go a lot quicker as does giving her food in her crate to distract her. Did I mentioned she’s food driven???

She is excellent walking on a leash and has been great at social events. She’s just starting to show a little shyness with new people approaching and will bark but that quickly becomes excitement with loads of puppy kisses once she gets to say hi.

Princess would be best suited in a home with a yard and preferably another dog in the home as she can get rather loud initially when left alone. She’s great with other dogs and kids however older kids would be best as she’s still very much a puppy and tends to be mouthy and jumps.

We are still working on potty training but she’s very close, you just have to watch for the cues.

Princess will make a great addition to loving family!”

Meet Luna

This beautiful brindle girl has been in one of our foster homes getting ready to find her forever family…

“Luna has such a sweet and unique soul that I haven’t seen in any other dog that I’ve met. She’s friendly to my other animals and is very gentle with everyone. Even with her coming in from being abandoned from the hurricane, Luna is very playful, loving, has a lot of energy, and loves to be outside. She definitely needs a home that will walk, play, and most of all be patient with her since she can get shy and stubborn at times.

She knows basic commands which is amazing but is also smart and could pick up new commands. She is also very sneaky and plays hide n seek with our shoes but she never has ripped up anything and is learning…she is still technically a puppy after all and we love her for that. A big thing with Luna is she’s treat driven so keep that in the back of your head if she’s being stubborn. Overall I think she would be a perfect fit for an active house that can give her lots of love and attention.”

Hey there!

I wanted to introduce you to the most delightful little pup you'll ever meet - Aria, or Ari for short. Aria is a bundle of joy and energy, always ready for a playtime adventure. She is 10lbs and 3 1/2 months old! Whether she's tossing around her favorite stuffies or merrily hopping around the yard like a little rabbit, she never fails to bring a smile to your face.

But that's not all! Aria is also a cuddle bug at heart. She loves to snuggle up in your lap, enjoying every moment of affection until she gets the wiggles and is off to her next playful escapade. One of her favorite pastimes is lying on her back and basking in belly rubs - it's pure bliss for her!

Aria recently said goodbye to her brother, who was adopted on Sunday. However, she still finds joy in playing with the older dog in her home, showing just how social and friendly she is. Aria is also completely crate trained and sleeps soundly through the night. She's comfortable in her crate during the day, but her true happiness shines when she's with her people.

Meet Dexter!

Dexter is a handsome and goofy guy who came down from Alabama looking for his forever family. He is a ~7 months old Cur/Shepherd mix. He is currently ~45 pounds and will likely continue to grow some. Dexter has been living in one of our experienced foster homes for the last week along with another dog, a cat and two young children. He gets along well with everyone and especially loves playing with the other dog in the home, along with his basket of toys.

Dexter is medium energy and walks pretty well on a leash. He knows how to sit very well and will sit at the door to get his leash on and off. He’s still learning all of his manners, but he’s willing to listen and is very food motivated. While he doesn’t love his crate, he will go right in there to follow a couple of treats, where he whines for a minute and then lays down. He is also potty-trained and hasn’t had any accidents in his foster home.

When he’s not playing, he likes to pick a spot near a member of his family to chill out and nap. He will make a great addition to his new home!

Meet Grape 🍇

Grape has been hanging out in one of our awesome foster homes, and here is what they had to say about this sweetheart…

“I have fostered Grape since she was 7 weeks old, she is now 3 1/2 months old around 25 lbs. She is very energetic, loves other dogs & kids, she responds to stay, sit and crate. She's great in the crate and has never whined during the night. She is not really a fan of loud noises or dogs that bark in her face to play. She's good on a leash, she also tolerates baths, but would rather not take one. No problem eating, she's a canine vacuum ? She is not completely potty trained, but she is so smart she’s almost there!”

Grape will need a fenced yard in her new home and a doggie playmate for her energy level.

Meet Betsy

Betsy is a medium sized, 35lbs Cur mix who is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. She loves people and warms up quickly to new faces.

Betsy has been living in a foster home with an 80lb senior dog whom she gets along with fantastically. She however, can be uneasy around larger dogs she does not know and may take some time to warm up to them.

She walks very well, is eager to get out and exercise and listens to commands. She is also well behaved when left at home uncrated.

Betsy adores her people and would love a family that is home a lot. She would like nothing more than to curl up next to you on the couch!

By now, many of you have seen this startling video of a hoarding situation in Highlands County. Tomorrow morning, a rescue team from our shelter will be heading over to assist in this heartbreaking situation.

Community Ambassadors at Work

This past week, our shelter ambassadors Dally, Beans, Hugo & Denali all participated in the Great American Teach- In, criss crossing counties to cover more ground. Little Beans took south Pinellas county, visiting several elementary schools in St Pete, making a quick stop at Madeira Beach Fire Department Station 25 to nap & then hitting a middle school on his way home.

Dally took over the Northern part of Pinellas County visiting several middle school classes, spreading awareness about rescue and the power of fostering. Her family has been a very important part of our shelters life saving efforts. They are long time fosters, not only for pups, but they foster kitties too! And fostering saves lives 🐾

Hugo took mid-county and stopped by to see his friends at the LiFT Academy in Clearwater, a school where they celebrate neurodiversity ✨ Hugo’s special story of being neurodiverse & mobility challenged created an instant connection with his audience, demonstrating how our differences make us beautiful. Based on the photos, we think the students fell in love with our sweet meatball.

Not to be left out, Denali made a trip into Hillsborough county, visiting elementary school students and wowing them with her wiggle butt, her happy tail, goofy grin & her turtle shimmy. Students learned about Denali’s story of survival and the care that goes into keeping her skin and fur healthy.

Overall, we think the pups enjoyed it as much as the kids did ♥️

Sweet Denali

Meet Denali, a 4 month-old hound mix breed male, looking for his forever family. He is a happy go lucky pup, who is very smart and food motivated. He’s potty trained with no accidents, confident on a leash, and has learned how to sit. He’s great with his foster-brother, loves crinkly toys, loves to run, play tug and explore on walks.

He’s crate trained and loves a good blanket. He’s a snuggler and loves to sleep 💤

Meet Monica

Monica is a 7 month old, 40lb cutie rescued from Suwanee County after Hurricane Helene passed thru. She is affectionately known as Betty Boop in our house since she likes to boop the back of our legs when we are walking around!

She gets along well with our dog, fully potty trained, listens to commands, gentle when taking treats and generally calm, until it is time for zoomies! She would love a big, fenced in yard to play in and would be a good running buddy. She does well on leash, except when she becomes a professional lizard chaser.

She is tall and curious enough to counter surf and is also able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! She is eager to learn and smart, so with additional training her countertop curiosity and her leaping can be curbed!

She does well not being in the crate at night and when we leave the house, but will need to ensure she has lots of toys to play with! She also loves belly rubs and will be very insistent that you do not stop rubbing!

Hi there! My name is Watts and I’m a little over one-year old mixed breed male looking for my forever home. I am potty trained and have only had an accident or two when I get excited to see you when you come home! I am also crate trained and walk well on a leash.

I love playing with my foster brother, but am also good about entertaining myself with the toys we have! Because I’m still young and love to run around, I’d do best with a home that has a yard.

I can be wary of noises because I’m still learning all about the world, but I’m very curious and love to explore! Usually some treats make me feel better :) I know how to sit, stay, and shake. My foster parents say I’m super smart because I taught myself how to use the doggy door in one day!

Here are some things I love: ice cubs, tennis balls, playing fetch, car rides, and carrots! I hope to add my new family to that list soon!

Imagine being a dog in the woods, alone and you are at least 12 years old. You have barely any energy to stand, let alone the strength to break through the vines and undergrowth that has you entangled in a life threatening grip.

Your body is ravished.

You suffer from malnutrition, badly infected ears, the early onset of Nuclear sclerosis and dry eye, severe vertebrae degeneration, Osteoarthritis, Hypertension, Acne, Anemia and you are emaciated.

Imagine all of this while hurricane force winds are bearing down on you and pelting sideways rain stinging your already battered body.

Was this how her suffering would end?

Somehow, the very next day, she was found by the landowner who was inspecting his property. The gentleman was in tears as he phoned in his find to Hillsborough County Animal Services. After being picked up and somewhat stabilized at the Hillsborough County Resource Center, Suncoast Animal League was notified of the situation and asked to help.

The morning after picking up "Cypress" from the Resource Center, she was taken to Caring Paws Animal Hospital where she spent the day going through a battery of tests—a special medicated bath, a few injections and sent home with numerous medications.

Progress was slow but steady and Cypress rewarded our care with our own personal tail wags. And just as she was settling in, Hurricane Milton was headed our way. Cypress was transferred to the home of Dr. Danielson and his wife, Michelle where she rode out the storm under their care. Even after the devastating storm had passed, Cypress stayed with the Danielson's so she could receive ongoing physical therapy and cold laser treatments.

All the while, a gentleman named Ed kept a close eye on the progress of Cypress after he visited her at our shelter. It was love at first sight and Ed continued to follow her on Facebook, email and phone calls.

From the beginning, Ed had expressed a strong desire to adopt her and give her the best life possible. He seemed perfect for her so we made arrangements with Caring Paws for Ed to visit Cypress up close and personal. And the love at first sight was mutual. Ed became her foster parent and continued his trips back and forth to Caring Paws Animal Hospital so she could continue her treatments.

And although Cypress will still need to continue with weekly therapy, Ed was given the consent to adopt her and on November 14th, that's exactly what happened.

Cypress who looks absolutely beautiful and is so happy (her tail never stops wagging), was officially adopted by Ed. Ed jokingly said " when Cypress isn't sleeping she's napping." He wakes her up every so often and they go on many short walks together to keep her old bones moving. Their bond to each other is clearly evident and endearing.

I don't think Cypress could have possibly imagined how much her life would change for the better. All of the bad memories can now be set aside and she can concentrate on having the best days of her life.
