Join us in safeguarding the future of West Klosterman preserve, a treasured Florida scrubland, as we pay tribute to Colleen Connor's remarkable life and enduring legacy. Every donation made will help secure its preservation for generations to come.

Matching campaigns to help save the West Klosterman Preserve first started in 2022 with an anonymous donor, who set up a matching fund that helped fund the Green DeFence campaign and raised over $50,000 for the Preserve. HSP is continuing to monitor the upsurge in Canine Influenza Virus in our area.

We have not had an active case in our care yet but we are continuing active measures to keep our adoptable pets as well as our adopters safe.

Prior to the surge in the virus HSP has been taking additional precautions regarding the flow of animals through our facility to further reduce the likelihood of the spread of influenza and other contagious diseases common in animal shelter environments. We also have a supply of canine influenza vaccines in stock to administer to any animals who enter our facility and need an influenza vaccine booster. We are also educating our adopters about the illness with the guide below to protect their new pets, what symptoms they should look for and how to respond.

Please check out this article on what you need to know about Canine Influenza: www.humanesocietyofpinellas.org/canine-influenza-virus-what-you-need-to-know/

Just a heads up both Pasco and hillsborough county shelters are temporarily closed due to influenza outbreaks. We advise keeping your pets at home from dog parks or anywhere they may be exposed to pets with unknown vaccine status. We do have Influenza vaccines available they are a two part series one month apart then yearly boosters. Also if your pet is exhibiting symptoms of influenza please contact your veterinarian we will be using isolation protocols for all pets exhibiting respiratory symptoms starting June 28th similar to Covid we will be making their appointments at a time fewer animals will be in hospital and asking you to keep them in the car until we are ready for them and to bring them in our back entrance away from the main lobby. Thank you for your understanding.

With summer around the corner, today's theme of "Travel with Care" is an important reminder on the dangers of leaving your pet in an unattended car.

Your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness and even death, even on a day that doesn't seem hot to you. And cracking the windows makes no difference. Find out more here ⬇️ https://bit.ly/2W5nDLH

Seeking instruments! (Brass, Woodwinds, Strings)

I saw someone today donating a saxophone to the Alonso band program and Iit reminded me that for a while I have been wondering how many of us have instruments sitting around gathering dust that are desperately needed by music students. If anyone has an instrument to Donate let me know and I will make sure they get in the right hands! Farnell Middle band is absolutely desperate for instruments and I know that Alonso Raven Band and Ascent can always use some as well! With a band of 200 plus anything is welcome that’s in good shape and doesn’t need anything beyond minor repair. Also new reeds, mouthpieces etc. Both band and orchestra instruments! Please share I will make this public! You can drop them off at my office (Palm
Palm Harbor Animal Hospital) or DM me. 🙂 thanks in advance.

We are not a proponent of grain free foods unless pet has a documented allergy - in that case there are multiple diet options not featuring legumes. We’ve had multiple cases of this in practice particularly in large breed dogs and thankfully many of them have resolved. Have questions about your dogs diet? Call our office!

Skye thoroughly enjoyed her belly rubs from Dr. Brown at her visit yesterday! 😊 She is a definite success story! ❤️

Skye first came to our office a year ago for coughing and an enlarged heart. Her echocardiogram showed severe heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy / DCM). DCM is a disease characterized by significant loss of pumping function (myocardial failure) that leads to heart enlargement and heart failure. DCM can happen if a dog carries the genetic mutation for the disease, in which case the disease is incurable and progressive.

However, DCM-like changes can also be seen in dogs eating diets containing high levels of peas, chickpeas, pea fibers, lentils and other legumes. These ingredients are most commonly found in grain-free formulations of dog foods. It is thought that these specific ingredients lead to a toxicity over time that affects the heart muscle and causes myocardial failure.

When we first saw Skye, she had been eating one of these diets so she was immediately transitioned to a diet that did not include these ingredients. She was also started on several heart medications to support her heart function and to attempt to keep her out of heart failure.

It’s impossible to know for sure whether an individual has the genetic form of DCM versus nutritional DCM until response to medications/diet change can be documented. The former will not improve and will continue to progress, while the latter can sometimes improve or resolve completely with a diet change and medications.

Thankfully, Skye responded very well to the diet change and medications and we saw gradual improvement in her heart dimensions and function over the past year. Yesterday’s echocardiogram showed that her heart is now back to a normal size with normal function! This is the absolute best case scenario and (sadly) doesn’t happen for every dog who has nutritional DCM.

Not all dogs who eats these diets will develop heart disease, but pet owners should be aware of the potential risks of feeding diets high in these specific ingredients. They are still widely available in pet food stores so make sure to read the ingredient labels.

We were so happy to give Skye’s owner the good news! She was also happy to start safely cutting back on her medications 😊❤️

Anyone who has ever experienced the fear and uncertainty that comes with realizing your pet is lost, knows what a scary time it can be for both your animal and your family. There are steps you can take to make sure your pet is able to find their way back to you in this situation!

Microchipping is one of the most effective ways that the finder of your animal can locate you. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and sits just under the skin. Microchips are not tracking devices, but they carry your contact information so you can be notified by the finder when your animal is found.

Although small, the microchip is a mighty tool used in pet reunification here at our shelter. Join us next weekend for a FREE microchip event. Come receive a free microchip implanted by a veterinarian. In addition, PeHub is providing free collars and tags to further strengthen your animals defense against being lost. Please note that all cats must be in carriers for this event. We look forward to seeing you and your furry friends join us in the fight to ensure all pets can find their way home!

*** UPDATE***
We decided to take Murphy to Renee at Palm Harbor Animal Hospital and we could not be more pleased!!!
She was absolutely amazing!! She was able to take Murphy by his leash, walk back and clip his nails with no issues whatsoever. She was even able to carry him back in her arms. We were shocked! Renee is truly a Chi whisperer!!

We have a 2yo (best guess) Chihuahua mix rescue that we adopted a month ago. Although he is getting much better he is still not to a point where he will let us (or anyone else) trim his nails and they are crazy long. I’m not sure why the vet at the rescue didn’t do them when he was being neutered and chipped but they are way past due.
We are looking for recommendations for a place that can do it (most likely with a muzzle).
Thanks in advance for any help.
