KEEP THEM WARM AND DRY - THE COLD IS HERE.
Ensure proper attire and shelter:
• Invest in pet sweaters or jackets
• Purchase thermal booties
• Shelter should be well-insulated to maintain the dog's body heat.
• Look to elevate the floor off the ground with a warm bed.
• Protect the dog from moisture, wind, and sun.

Recognize signs of hypothermia or cold stress:
• Shivering.
• Tucked tail.
• Whining or excessive licking.
• Reluctance to move.
• Curling up with the nose tucked into the body.
• If these signs are present, bring the dog indoors and seek veterinary care immediately.

Post-outdoor care:
• Brush off any remaining snow from the dog's body when they come inside.
• Dry off your pet to prevent further cooling.

Invest in heated dog bowls:
• Prevents the water in the bowl from freezing.
• Use plastic bowls to avoid the dog's tongue freezing to the surface of metal or ceramic.

PLEASE MEET JUNIPER!
Juniper, a 6-year-old mixed breed female, arrived at the Anti Cruelty Society (ACS) anticruelty.org in Chicago from Charleston, SC, after severe weather displaced many pets. She came to ACS heartworm positive, stressed from transport, and still nursing her puppies.
Through a virtual consultation, they were able to discuss Juniper's short-term and long-term behavioral needs and adjust her medication without compromising her heartworm treatment.

Within a day of her new meds, Juniper showed signs of improvement, and by day 7, she began trusting the team and was loving the ACS staff. Thanks to the power of telehealth, expert specialist guidance (and collaborative care!), ACS is continually monitoring Juniper's progress, providing enrichment, socialization, and behavior modification.

DID YOU KNOW?
PETS HIDE PAIN…primarily because of an evolutionary survival instinct; in the wild, showing weakness or injury would make them an easy target for predators, so concealing pain increases their chances of survival, a trait that persists even in domesticated animals today. If you feel your pet is in pain, please see your veterinarian immediately.
