2024 Stallions of the North
Blue aka The Knight Commander, had his 2nd Public outing today. He did so well for a 3 yr old Stallion. Soooo many people…. He was a bit intimidated with the people in the stands but he made it thru. I think he prefers the lonely trails to a crowd of people. lol. But He was kind to everyone who came up to see him after his presentation.

Getting the Vaquero fit...
a lesson in perseverance.

Wow! I am so glad one of the group members on Western Nebraska Traditional Hackamore & Bitless Enthusiasts documented every stage of shaping.

What we can learn from this? Don't give up!

This is where a hackamore starts to become a 'signal device,' and not just a bitless device.

With this close of fit, it's easy to imagine how the horse could feel every subtle signal through the rein, especially since the lower branches are shaped open enough to allow the heel knot to swing freely.

Because the hackamore isn't loose and bouncing around on the face, creating white noise the horse tunes out, because there is a true 'neutral,' the horse begins to notice when the hackamore DOES move, and they begin to work off that signal before any pressure is applied...

Suddenly, we have a communication system that has nothing to do with pulling or bumping. It's all lift and swing and release, all on a draped rein.

The hackamore wasn't designed with swing mechanics for the increased leverage and pain compliance, but for the signal.

The hackamore wasn't designed thicker and of a firmer mass so it can intimidate the horse, but so it can be shaped and cradle the face so we don't experience slip and friction and the resulting rubbing, which can happen with a thinner or looser piece of equipment.

We get this result with the time-tested ‘Soup Can Method,’ which you’ll see in the comments...

Frost Bit Farm is Expecting Two foals next July.
Our first should be out of our mare Knight of Grace. She is base coat red and carries one cream gene and one gray gene. She has been bred to our new Stallion Knight Commander. He is base coat black and carries a roan gene.

Second due is out of our mare Diamond Fox’s Crimson Pearl. She is base coat red and carries a roan gene. She has been bred to Jubilation’s Dusty Treasure. He is base coat black with one tobiano gene and one champagne gene.

Can’t wait to see what we get.

Horses travel every day for a number of reasons—to be bought and sold, for competition, for breeding purposes, etc. Whatever the reason, horse owners should be aware of the complications that may occur due to transportation, including traumatic injuries, diarrhea, muscular problems, respiratory problems, overheating, colic, and even laminitis (in the case of overweight horses).

Following are a few tips to help your equine friend maintain good health and welfare during transport. This list is by no means complete and we encourage you to reach out to your veterinarian for additional advice when it comes to traveling with your horse!

• Be aware that inadequate management of feed and water intake during travel could cause colic, gastric ulceration and heat stress. Food and water should be provided prior to transport, during regular rest breaks and upon arrival at destination.

• Ensure your horse’s immunizations are up to date against respiratory pathogens to protect your animal from these diseases.

• The horse should be rested before the journey, given rest stops during travel, and have time to recover on arrival at the destination.

• The vehicle should be well-ventilated to help prevent respiratory problems or overheating.

• Drive slowly and carefully (NO TEXTING, avoid driving when fatigued or eating while driving, etc.) to provide a comfortable journey for the animal and reduce the risk of injury and fatigue.

Happy trails!

Took Hershey out to Crevasse Moraine today. He did great. It was his first time out on the trail away from home and his second time in the woods. He took the lead and was excited to see what was around the next corner.

Hershey’s first time away from home for a ride. Went to the indoor arena. He did great. He asked a lot of questions. But never got overwhelmed. He is such a great 2 yr old. Going to make a great horse for someone.

Last two days has been so nice. Took time out of chores to hop up and ride.
