Wow. What a spring! The weather cooperated and the plants were beautiful and you! YOU! Showed up! We know there are a dozen other places in the area where you could purchase your spring flowers and yet you chose to come to us. Thank you, thank you. The greenhouse started as a bit of a dream and has grown bigger and better every year and that is thanks to all of you who choose to support it. Devyn worked hard to stuff it to the rafters with so many new and unique things and to make it a place where we would want to shop too. It might be empty now but fear not, plants will return! Mums, ornamentals, *asters*, all to be snuck in amongst all her homegrown pumpkins this fall. 84 varieties this year, she says?! While they are growing we will be open with all the great stuff inside the barn, however we will be CLOSED this coming weekend as we all get a little bit of a breather, and do some junking! Stay tuned for updates.

In Kelliher Minnesota, close to the Canadian border, there is a place that makes the most amazing muffins. Devyn has succeeded in replicating them! Big, moist tender muffins that will be a Saturday staple in the Barn. New bakery items and oh, the things we've found and made over the winter! There are changes inside and out to make the Milk Barn better than ever. You can be the first to see and taste it all when the BARN OPENS April20.

Did you know? Devyn sells some of the plants she raises for herself. Her pepper, tomato, squash, and cucumber plants are always healthy and beautiful. She has her tried and true favorites she brings back every year but always has fun new kinds. This year there will be 12! tomato varieties available. Everyone says she has a green thumb, and while that might be, she always says growing the right plants helps set you up for success! Weather permitting, they will be available in the MB greenhouse April 27th.

For ten years we've managed to keep everything about the Milk Barn in our family. Sheila, who was an integral part of our crew (and the most adventuresome junker) has taken a step back and is devoting more of her time to Scattered Acres. Devyn has stepped into Sheila's role and other kids and grandkids help wherever needed to keep the Barn going. The pictures are of the Milk Barn crew and a little about them. We each have our own likes, dislikes and strengths and when combined make the Barn unique and interesting. After ten years we still like each other, enjoy spending time together and love junking together. Thanks for coming along with us on this tale of the Milk Barn and for your amazing support over the last ten years. Now, it's time for us to get busy. April and spring opening will be here before you know it!

Christmas! This is the story of our family's barn, transformed for the season outside and in with quilts, wood, wire and tin. Little did we know that it would be so well loved.
In order to reach a wider audience, we had a booth at the Odell, NE craft show for 2 years. This quickly became craziness in a very small space. The next year we kept Christmas in the Barn and have done so ever since. Almost everything that is offered at Christmas has been handcrafted by the our crew and is unique to the Milk Barn. If you've been to our Christmas open house you know that things sell out quickly. This is the only time that the Barn is open at night. It is magical and we love sharing it with all of you. Next time on As The Milk Barn Turns we'll take a closer look at everyone who makes the Milk Barn..the Milk Barn.

Keeping an ever changing inventory in the Milk Barn can be challenging. The last ten years have been full of junking adventures. Some disappointing, some scary, always fun and frequently full of pack rat nests and p**p. The 127 yard sale...epic! Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. We met so many interesting and friendly people, and the junk! A trailer full that was completely different from what we could find locally. Junk Ranch in Prairie Grove, Arkansas is a fun time with good music, good food and good junk. Sometimes Eric will take us to estate sales in Kansas City. It's fun to go into once beautiful homes and have a peek at their lives. Occasionally we are invited to pick private property. These are the best as you never know what you might find, sometimes it's drama and danger! Ask Devyn about an old grainery that involved a badger, falling porch posts and a very angry turkey buzzard. Getting our finds home can present its own set of problems. We usually haven't driven an appropriate vehicle and we've never met a ratchet strap we liked. Good times, good memories and a cold beer at the end of the day. Next time on As The Milk Barn Turns, Christmas at the Barn.

Growing up, there were always flowers around the house and Barn. Our mom had flower beds along with flowers at the edge of her vegetable garden. Friends and family would trade "starts" to improve and expand their gardens. Some of you may remember our dad's mums. He loved them and enjoyed sharing them with everyone who drove by. In 2017 we started selling flowers and the "plant porch" was added to the east side of the Barn. Oh, those flowers brought just as much enjoyment to us as it did to you! 2 years later, Sheila purchased a greenhouse from Bergstoms in Clay Center when they were going out of business. Greg and his crew of family members dismantled it. Part of it became a greenhouse at Sheila's house and the remainder was reassembled south of the Barn. Every year we improve the quantity and selection of flowers and Greg dreams up yet another edition of his one of a kind planters. We think there's no better place to be on a spring day than the Milk Barn's greenhouse. In 2018 we started growing pumpkins. Devyn focuses on the "gourmet" varieties and Greg and Joyce's grandkids, the orange ones. This too has grown every year and now includes over 70 varieties. Every September you'll find the greenhouse decked out for fall with pumpkins and mums and ready for our annual Pumpkin Palooza. Last, but not least, was the addition of the front porch to the Barn. The sign that previously welcomed skaters and dancers to the Pavillion at Strawberry, KS now welcomes all to the Milk Barn. Our goal has remained the same for the last ten years. We care for things left behind by those who came before us. Repairing, restoring and repurposing whenever we can and creating a place where WE would like to shop and hopefully, you do as well. Next time on As The Milk Barn Turns, junking adventures!

Let's take another look back at the last ten years of the Milk Barn. The next area we tackled is also the oldest. South of the center(counter) room, we've been told it had doors on each end. Horses would pull a wagon in and when unhitched, led to the feed bunk. The wide plank floor in this room is original!! How cool is that? Opening up the hayloft was the brainchild of Greg and Joyce. What a great surprise and we were immediately all in! Long a favorite part of the Barn, we had spent many hours working and playing up there. Hello, there was a Tarzan rope! Dust motes in a sunbeam from the peak window, the floor worn smooth by a thousand hay bales and hidden kittens! This almost doubled our space and we went to fun, filling it. As we got more into junking and repurposing that junk, we enjoyed watching Black Dog Salvage. They had such original ideas and just like us, had fun in the process. In 2015 Sheila, Greg and Susan went to Roanoke, VA to Black Dog Salvage. Oh. What. Fun! From that Greg Dog Salvage was born in the retired milking parlor. For many years you would have found our dad, morning and night, smoking a pipe, KFRM on the radio, milking. The salvage area is rusty, crusty stuff and you are encouraged to dig. You never know what you might find! We have finally ran out of Barn! Next time on As The Milk Barn Turns we'll go outside and another complete transformation.

Milk Barn friends, TEN years! Over the winter we'll take a walk down memory lane. The room that originally housed the milk bulk tank is where it all started. An easy choice because it had walls, a ceiling and a concrete floor. Adjacent to that was a "lean to" where grandpa parked his combine. It's hard to imagine because it seems so tiny! We enclosed it, put in a floor and added it to the bulk tank room. We were in high cotton but very quickly outgrew that cotton patch. We tackled the center room of the Barn next. 100 years of loose hay as this is where the horses were kept. Wearing dust masks, all of that was removed using a skid loader and pitchforks. Walls and floor installed. This is the center room of the Barn where the counter is currently. Looking back on those days, we never lacked for dreams! Fortunately, there are skilled carpenters and hard workers in our family determined to make it happen. Enjoy the pictures and follow along for the next installment of "As The Milk Barn Turns."

Milk Barn friends, time really does fly when we're having fun, doesn't it? 2023 saw Devyn managing the greenhouse, and to no one's surprise, doing so successfully. A wind storm in June presented challenges, but no one injured and we're looking better than ever. Pumpkin Palooza and the Winter families Pumpkin patch. So much fun! This followed by another epic Milk Barn Christmas. Sparkles, the Milk Barn ambassador, has developed a little arthritis( much like the rest of us) but continues to live the good life, soaking up all the attention from her Saturday admirers. The Milk Barn crew is making plans along with some surprises for the Barns tenth year in 2024. Our family extends their sincere gratitude for your support and wish you a blessed, safe and healthy Christmas and new year. We'll be ready for you and more fun in April!
