🍂🦃 Thanksgiving Inspiration for Riding Instructors: Turkey Tail Two Point! 🦃🍂

It’s not uncommon to find a novice rider struggling to find a balanced two-point position. I’m sure you’ve seen it before:

😳 Hips creeping forward
😳 White knuckles balancing weight on the horse’s neck
😳 Lower leg slipping behind the girth

I find getting a little more angle at the hips and pushing them back is usually to key to getting balanced here.

Once you have done the what, why, how, mastering the skill often comes down to practice and postural corrections.

This time of year, I like to bring out my "turkey tail feathers" to add a playful twist to lessons! The goal is simple: stick out those tail feathers to find balance and flexion at the hips.

It's hard not to chuckle at turkey tails popping up over ground poles and jumps.

American Saddlebreds (saddleseat type) are born with upright headsets and bright, peppy personalities (as shown here by our beloved Fifi). It is a common misconception that these horses are abused into this frame. To the contrary, it would be abusive to ask this horse to lower herself into a hunter frame instead. She physically does not have the build to be forward headed.

We had a wonderful show at St Louis National Charity Horse Show, with Danielle and Fifi sweeping the adult equitation division and coming out reserve in the open three gaited jackpot!

In accordance with the new USEF rules, we will now be offering riding lessons on the weekends! We will continue to offer free lessons for children in the foster care system and who are wards of the state, and also offer paid lessons priced as follows:

Single lessons are $30/each
Packages are 5/$125, or 10/$240. Lesson packages must be used in the month they are purchased.

Gift certificates are available! Give the gift of riding and loving horses for the holidays.
