Senior Paws Rescue

Senior Paws Rescue Senior Paws Rescue is a non-profit organization located in southern Indiana. We provide a refuge for senior dogs (10+ yrs). In 2012 we moved from St.
(26)

David and Pam started with a rescue dog, Mullet, in 2001. He was found on a busy road and had heartworms. He has been with us ever since, and has inspired us to adopt more animals. Petersburg, FL to a 50 acre farm in Hardinsburg, IN. Then our awesome friend, Dinah Sanchez, suggested we start a non-profit and sparked the "fire." We decided to focus on senior dogs as they are harder to place. Our an

imals are NOT up for adoption - we provide a refuge for senior dogs to live out the rest of their lives in comfort. They are provided medical care, food and treats, heartworm prevention, a warm place to sleep (they are all inside dogs), a large outside area to get exercise (3 acres fully fenced), accommodations to meet their special needs (such as ramps) and most important, lots of love! We currently have 14 dogs (although our "limit" is 10!). While we have many other animals on the farm (goats, chickens, pigs, cats), all donations made to Senior Paws Rescues goes strictly to the care of these senior dogs.

A day in the life of running a dog refuge:

Wake up at 5:30 am after laying awake since 3 am because the dogs were scared from the thunderstorms. Have coffee while I feed and give meds.

Clean up any messes, change out dog bedding, start laundry.

Start my corporate America job 'cause there's no paycheck in dog rescue :) - I'm on conference calls most of the day. In between calls let the dogs out, do more laundry, sweep and mop the floors. The good news is that doggie doors are being installed next week, so they can come and go as they please!

After work, feed dogs and give meds. Clean up the yard and mow -we have two big fenced yards and a field, so mowing takes place 3x a week this time of year. Take care of SPR social media and emails, unpack any in-kind donations our wonderful donors have sent, and ensure thank you messages are done.

Usually at least once a week, sometime 2 or 3 times a week, there is a vet visit in the evening so I don't get home until after 9 pm

Weekends include shopping for supplies, more heavy-duty cleaning, and dog washing.

So, have I convinced you to start a dog rescue yet?

A rare vent.....

When service teams come to SPR (pest control, 811 marking, cable install) they hear the many dogs barking all at once. There's no way they could NOT hear it.

So, they know I have dogs, and they see the fenced yard with the gate closed....right?

Yet several just open the gate to the yard and come walking in. If there are dogs in the yard, there are a couple that will get out a gate FAST. Also, how do they know whether any of the dogs bite? They don't know.

I've had two pest control people just leave the gate open when they leave. I HAVE DOGS. Leaving a gate open means some get out and I am chasing dogs around the neighborhood, not to mention the risk of one getting lost or hit by a car.

Yes, the accountability for the safety of the dogs and of the people who service my property belongs with me. But these agencies sometimes come unannounced and I have no time to get the dogs inside. And even if I do know they are coming, isn't it common sense to close a gate after you open it, especially when you can SEE and HEAR the dogs in the yard?

I now have to put chains with locks on all the gates and walk around with service visitors because of this. Which means I have to unlock a gate every single time I need to go in or out too.

Sissy crossed the Rainbow Bridge today.

I'm sure she met up with Minnie, they came into rescue together.

She was strong until the end. She and I sat in the sunshine under a tree outside the veterinarian's office for a while before it was time to say goodbye.

She was small, but mighty. Rest in peace my girl.
