There have been recent national news reports regarding a new respiratory virus affecting dogs. It is being referred to as Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease.

We have not diagnosed any cases here at FPAH. We do classically see an increase in respiratory cases around the holidays, but have not seen any yet.

Dogs affected with CIRD fall into three categories:
1. Chronic mild to moderate cough of prolonged duration (6-8 weeks) that is minimally to non responsive to antibiotics
2. Chronic pneumonia that is minimally to non responsive to antibiotics
3. Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and can lead to death within 24-36 hours. This is the rarest outcome

To protect your pet:
1. At risk animals should be vaccinated for bordatella, influenza, and parainfluenza
2. Avoid communal water/food bowls and toys.
3. Avoid play dates with unknown animals and congregating in large groups.
4. Keep you pet home and isolated if sick.

If you have concerns that your pet may be sick, please give us a call.
