We Say Goodbye to Duke

It is with sadness that we share the news of Duke's passing yesterday morning. Our beloved golden Labrador crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully, leaving behind countless pawprints on our hearts.

Duke wasn't just a farm dog—he was family. His gentle spirit and wagging tail greeted everyone who came to our farm, from nervous first-time riders to seasoned boarders. He had a special way of making everyone feel welcome, often escorting visitors on impromptu tours of the property or patiently sitting beside students waiting for their riding lessons.

Many of you have your own "Duke stories"—whether he helped calm your child's nerves before a lesson, kept you company while you groomed your horse, or simply brightened your day with his golden smile and soulful eyes. He lived a life full of purpose, bringing comfort and joy to everyone he met.

While our farm feels emptier without his presence, we take comfort in knowing how much happiness he brought to all of us over the years. Duke truly embodied the loyal, loving spirit that makes dogs such treasured companions.

To everyone who loved him—thank you for being part of his wonderful life. The barn aisle won't be the same without the click of his nails on the concrete or his hopeful face peering around the corner at lunchtime.

Rest easy, sweet boy. You were the greatest boy, and you will be forever missed.

Racing the Herd: Country Road Chronicles 🐎

When I honked my horn, these majestic creatures took it as a personal challenge! Watch as these beautiful horses perk up their ears, recognize their names, and transform into a thundering stampede racing me to the dry lot. That moment when they respond to your voice and come galloping across the pasture? Pure country magic!

And it's not just the horses who love a good race - our cattle are just as competitive, especially when there's food involved! Nothing gets hooves moving faster than the promise of dinner. The way they barrel across the field, you'd think they were auditioning for the Kentucky Derby! 🐄🏁

Ever had your vehicle outpaced by a hungry herd? It's humbling and hilarious all at once!

Which animal do you think is the most food-motivated on your farm? Is it the speedy horses or the determined cattle? Share your farm racing stories below! 👇

Spring Horse Turnout on grass at Lakeside Stables.
🚩As the winter ends and pastures turn green, we carefully manage our horses' transition to fresh grass. Spring grass is dangerously high in sugars that can cause painful hoof inflammation (laminitis), digestive upset, and rapid weight gain in horses.
🚩Our night turnout system works best for everyone: horses eat grass when sugar levels are naturally lower at night, then enjoy hay during the day for steady digestion.
🚩This schedule keeps boarders happy since their horses are easily accessible in dry lots during daytime hours without long walks to distant pastures.
🚩The rotation also protects our pastures from overgrazing, keeping them healthy throughout the season.
🚩By carefully balancing fresh grass access with hay, we maintain both healthy horses and convenient horse care for everyone.

Some Points when turning horses out to fresh green grass: Laminitis risk - Fresh spring grass is high in sugars (fructans), which can trigger laminitis in susceptible horses. These sugars ferment rapidly in the hindgut, potentially leading to endotoxin release and inflammation in the hooves.
🚩Colic concerns - Sudden dietary changes from hay to rich grass can disrupt gut flora, potentially leading to gas, impaction, or spasmodic colic.
🚩Weight gain - Spring grass is extremely calorie-dense. Horses can gain weight rapidly, which is particularly concerning for easy keepers or those prone to metabolic issues.Lower sugar content at night - Grass accumulates sugars through photosynthesis during daylight hours. By evening, plants have used some of these sugars for growth, making nighttime grass generally lower in fructans than daytime grass.
🚩Better temperature for grazing - Horses naturally prefer grazing during cooler temperatures, making night grazing more aligned with their natural behavior patterns.
🚩Convenience for boarders - Your system ensures horses are easily accessible in their stalls during the day when most boarders visit, eliminating long walks to distant pastures.
🚩Pasture preservation - This rotation system prevents overgrazing and allows pastures to recover, extending their useful life throughout the season.
🚩Digestive stability - Providing hay during the day maintains gut fill and fiber intake, creating a more balanced diet rather than allowing horses to gorge exclusively on rich grass.

We aim to do the best by the horses!
Thank you all for the support, patience and help. We appreciate each and everyone of you.
