Identifying Lumps And Bumps With Diagnostic Testing. “One of the first ‘diagnostics’ that a veterinarian performs is obtaining a medical history of the animal and performing a physical exam,” Jacobson said. “Because an animal cannot tell us specifically what is wrong or what is bothering them, we have to rely on what clues they can give us, such as changes in energy, weight, eating habits, or other clinical signs.”

Lumps and bumps are a normal part of life, but what do we do when we notice a new lump or bump on our furry friend?  When we take our pet to a

How Free-Roaming Cats Impact Wildlife, Disease Transmission. “Outdoor cats may only bring home a mouse or bird once every few months, but this is likely a very small reflection of what they are actually up to,” explained Guyette, who studies cats and zoonotic diseases, with links to wildlife health, for her master’s research under the mentorship of VMBS professor Dr. Sarah Hamer. “As natural predators, cats have natural instincts passed down through generations that allow them not only to hunt for food to kill and eat but also to kill prey, even if they’re not looking for a meal.”

Cats are hunters by nature, which is why it’s not uncommon for an outdoor cat to bring home a “gift,” left on their owner’s doorstep.  Yet Molly

Understanding Littermate Syndrome In Puppy Pairs. “Littermate syndrome refers to a specific set of unfavorable behaviors that two puppies might exhibit if raised together immediately after weaning from their mother, like anxiety or fear,” Diers said. “This syndrome occurs when a pair of puppies raised together develop such a close bond with one another during important socialization stages that it hinders their ability to bond with their new owner.”

Puppies are so adorable that you may feel tempted to adopt two instead of just one. Even though having two puppies may seem like a good idea, raising them

Preventing Pet Intoxication. Our furry friends have curious natures, and even though we try our best to keep them safe and healthy, they may still get into trouble when they unknowingly eat human medications or other common household items that are toxic to them.

Vomiting. Veterinarians make a distinction between vomiting and regurgitation. Vomiting refers to the forceful expulsion of contents from the stomach. Regurgitation, on the other hand, is the passive return of contents from the esophagus. Food that is regurgitated never makes it to the stomach.

Urethral Obstruction in Cats. Urethral obstructions occur when the urethra (the tube through which urine exits the body from the bladder) is blocked. These blockages can be caused by plugs (a buildup of protein, cells, or minerals from the bladder), urinary stones, and/or inflammation. While both male and female cats can develop a urethral obstruction, it is most often seen in males because of their longer and narrower urethra.

Urethral obstructions are a life-threatening emergency. If the blockage lasts too long and urine is unable to exit the body, the buildup can damage the kidneys and cause the bladder to rupture.

A urethral obstruction is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the urethra, the tube through which urine exits the body, is blocked.

Tracheal Collapse in Dogs.Tracheal collapse is a respiratory disease that occurs when the dog’s trachea (windpipe) collapses, causing breathing problems and chronic coughing.

The trachea is a flexible tube made of sturdy C-shaped cartilage rings. These rings keep the trachea open, allowing air to move to and from the lungs. When these rings weaken and start to flatten, the air squeezes through a smaller space. The result is a harsh, dry cough that sounds like a goose honking.

Tracheal Collapse in dogs is a respiratory disease that occurs when the windpipe collapses, causing breathing problems and chronic coughing.

Tooth Resorption in Cats. The most common dental disease in domestic cats is a destructive process called tooth resorption. This painful condition is believed to affect more than 65% of cats during their lifetime. The cause of tooth resorption is currently unknown, but the condition seems to develop when a cell within the tooth called an odontoclast is activated and removes calcium from within the tooth structure. The tooth then starts to erode, often from within. As the disease progresses, the pulp cavity becomes exposed, causing sensitivity and pain.

The most common dental disease in domestic cats is a decay of the teeth called tooth resorption. It occurs in more than 65% of cats in their lifetime.
