Loss of Appetite or Anorexia. Any abnormal change in your pet’s eating habits should never be ignored. The medical term for a loss in appetite is called anorexia (not to be confused with the human eating disorder called anorexia nervosa). It can be normal for a picky cat or dog to skip a meal or two so long as they are acting normally otherwise. If the change in appetite is sudden or accompanied by other clinical signs, this can indicate a medical problem.

Kennel Cough. Kennel cough, also known as Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), is a highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract with both viral and bacterial causes. It is commonly spread in places where dogs are in close contact, such as boarding kennels, doggie daycares, dog parks, grooming salons, or dog shows. When an infected dog coughs, droplets travel through the air, infecting nearby dogs. Kennel cough can also be spread through direct contact with contaminated objects like water bowls, toys, and bedding.

Kidney Disease. Kidney disease refers to the inability of the kidneys to work properly. Kidneys perform several key functions in the body, the most important of which is filtering waste products from the blood. Kidneys also maintain the balance of electrolyte levels in the body (such as sodium, potassium, and chloride), maintain blood pressure, and produce urine. Damage to the kidneys can result in the buildup of waste products to dangerous levels in the blood, also known as azotemia.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) develops slowly over time and can damage the kidneys to the point where they are unable to function properly.

Hypothyroidism in Dogs.Hypothyroidism in dogs is typically the result of inflammation or shrinkage of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, is responsible for producing hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate, or how much energy the body uses to keep cells and organs functioning. In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, leading to a lower metabolic rate. This hormone deficiency and lower metabolic rate affects the function of multiple organ systems to varying degrees. Hypothyroidism is the most common hormonal imbalance in dogs. This condition is most frequently seen in dogs aged 4 to 10 years and tends to occur in medium and large breed dogs.

Hyperthyroidism in Cats. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid glands in a cat’s neck produce too much of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). Although the cause of hyperthyroidism is unknown, nearly all cases develop when a tumor forms on a cat’s thyroid. In very rare cases, this tumor is malignant (cancerous), but most of the time it is benign (non-cancerous). Hyperthyroidism is most often seen in middle-aged to older cats.

Hip Dysplasia in Dogs. Hip dysplasia is a skeletal disorder that results in instability or looseness of a dog’s hip joint. The hip joint normally functions as a ball and socket but, in dogs with hip dysplasia, the ball and socket do not fit properly — instead of rolling and sliding, they rub and grind.

Since the bones of the joint don’t line up correctly, the joint cartilage is subjected to abnormal wear and tear. Over time, cartilage damage occurs, resulting in pain and arthritis.

Canine hip dysplasia is an orthopedic condition that results in instability or looseness of the dog's hip joint.

Heart Disease in Dogs and Cats. Heart disease refers to any abnormality of the heart that affects its anatomic structure, ability to contract and relax, or electrical impulses that control its rate or rhythm of heartbeats. While both dogs and cats can get heart disease, dogs are more prone to developing structural abnormalities of their heart valves whereas cats are more prone to developing abnormalities of the heart muscle itself. Both species can have abnormalities of their heart rate and rhythm. Abnormalities of structure, contraction, and electrical activity can eventually lead to heart failure, which is the failure of the heart to pump enough blood for the body’s vital organs to function properly.

Heart disease refers to any abnormality of the heart that affects its structure, ability to contract, or electrical impulses.
