It’s so easy to forget that some things that are fun now create a lot of not fun later in life.

We say this a lot...

Ball . throwers . are . not . good . for . your . dog!

They might be having a great time, but the wear and tear on their joints is no joke.

What is it doing to your dog's joints?
- Repeated micro-trauma to muscles and cartilage is a cause of long-term damage.
- Chasing or even carrying items like a ball can shift your dogs weight distribution to their front legs, putting excessive weight through the joints of the front legs.
- Joints weakened by arthritis will be especially prone to further damage.
- High speeds can double the forces generated in the muscles.
- Braking is thought to be the most dangerous part of ball chasing and often responsible for shoulder injuries.

What can you do instead?
- Make sure to have a short warm up period before more intense exercise.
- Only ever throw the ball a short distance, on surfaces that avoid slipping and sliding.
- Throw below waist height so as to avoid jumping and don't do it repetitively
- Consider alternatives like scent work, varying location of the walk to keep things exciting, or playing hide and seek with the ball rather than playing fetch.

🐱 Mary is a 14 year old Russian Blue. She has been showing signs of joint discomfort and has not wanted to interact with her family or leave her room. This was our third weekly session together. Listen to her loud purring. 😊 On her second session, she pushed her cat house sibling out of my lap and crawled right in. 🐈 Her owner reports that Mary has been doing much better after our sessions and has been leaving her room and interacting with others for the first time in months.

How sweet is this?!

How sweet is this?!

The shelter told the boy that the 14-year-old deaf-blind dog would be a lot of work, but he didn't care. He even began taking notes about the dog's vaccinations and medicines to make sure he was a good owner to him!

Who says seniors can’t be spunky? This little cutie sparkles with happiness and charm. ✨Meet Reggie, the lap master, not the lap dog. 🐶 He had his first Barking Princess acupressure, massage, laser, and essential oil treatment today. He enjoyed his therapy while listening to healing vibration music, in the comfort of his own home. 🏡

The art of animal communication is accessible yet elusive. It's so simple that we often don't realize when it's taking place. Yet, it's more powerful than our minds may choose to believe.

When pets need to be separated from owners, consider how to include items familiar to the pet, such as a toy or towel with the owner's scent, in the experience.

You’ve likely seen— and possibly even shared— those cute viral photos and videos of domestic cats raising wild animals. Stories of cats raising wild animals are always adorable and heartwarming, but the sad truth is that most of these stories are fake, and most attempts to recreate them end in tragedy.

Take, for example, the well-known photo series of a cat “raising” a baby opossum. Opossums can’t suckle— its biologically impossible for them to do so. One photo shows the joey posed against the cat’s belly, at an angle that obscures that it isn’t actually attached. Another shows the joey clearly posed on the cat, with claims that it was clinging to her, at an age when joeys can’t naturally grip.

That particular viral photo series led to many people joining wildlife care groups asking for help because they had given an orphan opossum to a mother cat and the plan wasn’t working. In all these cases, the joeys died but could have been saved if they had been brought to rehabilitators quickly.

Another reason that you should never give a cat a wild baby animal is that cats, no matter how nurturing and loving, are still predators. Baby wild animals naturally fear them and their sounds and smells, and are very susceptible to stress-related death. A cat’s saliva is also easily tolerated by her kittens, but contains bacteria that can be fatal to baby wild animals (even without visible puncture wounds).

Your cat isn’t a wildlife rehabilitator. Please contact a professional for help if you’ve found an orphaned or injured wild animal in need of assistance. (And please spay and neuter your pets!)

I wonder how many residents this cat condo has.
