Everyone meet Ginger!

Ginger was recently diagnosed with Lyme Disease (the L on the test pictured below). She presented to the clinic for not feeling well, being lethargic, occasional lameness, and a fever. Dr. Nathan suspected that she was experiencing the symptoms of Lyme disease and therefore completed a blood test that confirmed his suspicions.

This is a reminder to all of our clients that ticks carry this disease and we still see active ticks in the area throughout the winter. And yes, we also see ticks in town as well as rural locations around our area.

This is the reason why we stress the importance of both vaccinating your pet for Lyme disease, as well as giving the monthly oral prevention for tick & flea control.

If you are interested in getting your pet vaccinated or receive the oral medication for the prevention of Lyme disease, please call us at (701)284-6070 to schedule an appointment for your pets next exam.

This is Kai and he was recently in to the clinic for his neuter.

He was cryptorchid, which means that one of his testicles did not fully descend into his sc***um like most males normally do at maturity.

Fun fact: testicles are developed in utero near the kidneys and travel through the abdomen to the sc***um, usually shortly after birth.

The undescended testicle does not form properly, and often appears small and misshapen (there is a picture of the size comparison of his normal testicle versus the undescended one in the comments for those that are interested).

As a result of this condition, a neuter was very important because if not removed, the undescended testicle can cause a specific kind of cancer.

Kai's surgery was successful, and both testicles were removed. Special thanks to Kai's owners for trusting Golden Valley Veterinary Clinic for his care!

Did you know that fleas can exist in the environment any time of the year? Did you know that fleas can lead to the development of tapeworms? These reasons are why we recommend treating your dogs and cats for fleas all year long. There are safe and effective treatments available to protect your pets from fleas that can last up to 3 months per treatment.

Post-exposure treatment of fleas with medication, flea bombing, and complete decontamination of your home can be very costly and time consuming, leading many owners to have a challenging time getting rid of flea infestations.

If you suspect your pet may have fleas, we ask that you please tell a receptionist ahead of time so proper precautions of these cases can be managed in the clinic to reduce other pets from being exposed.

In addition, to keep your environment clean and to keep your pets and family safe, please contact us to obtain your flea preventatives.

Blue-green algae produces toxins that can be deadly to dogs. Blue-green algae can look like a crust on the water, green cottage cheese, scum or like spilled green paint or green pea soup.

Do not let your pets swim or drink water from potentially contaminated water!

In our area, both Devils Lake, Home Dam, and Bylin Dam have been added to the list of advisories for the harmful algae. This list was recently updated on the North Dakota Environmental Quality website and can be found at https://deq.nd.gov/WQ/3_Watershed_Mgmt/8_HABS/Habs.aspx

It is corn cob season 🌽, which usually means something delicious to enjoy. However, it can also result in a hefty vet bill as well.

Corn cobs can cause intestinal blockages if eaten by pets of any size, which would lead to an emergency surgery to remove it.

Our recommendation is to discard your cobs appropriately and cover your garbage cans to prevent an emergency visit to the vet clinic!

Today is World Goat Day! 🐐 Did you know that goat meat is the most widely consumed animal meat worldwide? In fact, goats are commonly raised for meat, milk, fiber, companion animals, and pack animals.

Another fun fact: there's a golf course in Oregon that uses goats as caddies due to the cliffs and rough terrain of the course!
