Today is World Goat Day! 🐐 Did you know that goat meat is the most widely consumed animal meat worldwide? In fact, goats are commonly raised for meat, milk, fiber, companion animals, and pack animals.

Another fun fact: there's a golf course in Oregon that uses goats as caddies due to the cliffs and rough terrain of the course!

We want to extend a warm welcome to our newest hire, Alivia! She is a recent graduate from the Veterinary Technology program at NDSU. Her favorite part of working with Golden Valley Veterinary Clinic is being able to see both large and small animals and helping them all feel better. In her free time outside of work, Alivia enjoys going to the lake, hunting, & fishing. Please join us in welcoming her to our community!

We have an exciting new medication in our clinic called Librela!

This drug is a treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs and can provide long-term pain control and an improved quality of life for dogs. It is a monoclonal antibody that works to reduce pain signals to the brain, therefore making it easier for your dog to move and play. This once-a-month injection also reduces the need to give daily oral medications.

Your pet may be suffering from OA, regardless of age, size, or breed, if they limp after exercise, are slow to rise from lying down, being stiff or lagging behind while walking, having difficulty jumping or climbing stairs. Visit zoetispetcare.com/checklist/osteoarthritis-checklist to help identify your dog's activities and behaviors that may be a sign of OA.

After your veterinarian diagnoses your pet with OA, a treatment plan can be made to see if Librela would be a good fit for your dog.

Call us at (701)284-6070 to schedule an appointment today!

"Why spay and neuter my pet?" is a common question that we get asked. There are many important reasons why:

Spaying and neutering helps reduce some behavioral issues like marking and aggression, prevents unwanted pregnancies, reduces cancer risks like prostatic and mammary cancers and prevents pyometra.

A pyometra is a life-threatening emergency in which the uterus becomes filled with pus and becomes enlarged. Both cats and dogs of any age can get a pyometra if they are left intact. If left untreated, it leads to death. Treatment includes emergency surgery where the pus-filled uterus and ovaries are completely removed. This treatment is often very expensive, and is entirely preventable by spaying the pet.

Below is a picture of Yeti, an 8 year old German Shorthaired Pointer. She was seen in our clinic due to being lethargic, not wanting to eat, and a fever. Upon performing a physical exam, running blood work, and performing an abdominal ultrasound, Yeti was diagnosed with a pyometra. She then underwent an emergency spay to remove her pus-filled uterus and ovaries. (Warning: a photo of her uterus is included the comments, and some may find the photo graphic). After a full recovery from the surgery, Yeti is now feeling much better!

If you are interested in having your pets seen for a pre-surgical exam to get spayed or neutered, call us at (701)284-6070.

As the late great Bob Barker often said, "Help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered."

Did you know that certain urinary issues can be life-threatening if left untreated? In fact, urethral obstructions, or urinary blockages in male cats is a common emergency that we see here at the clinic. An obstruction results in the cat being unable to urinate appropriately, and is considered a life-threatening emergency where visiting the veterinarian immediately is recommended.

Some signs to watch out for include increased vocalization, vomiting, frequent trips to the litterbox with little to no urine output, lethargy, inappetence, and aggression. It's easy to mistake the inability to urinate as severe constipation. Also, there is often an underlying urinary tract infection that would need to be treated as well.

Treatments often include intensive hospitalization for several days with unblocking and maintaining a urinary pathway with a urinary catheter, blood work to assess dehydration and kidney function, IV fluids, daily pain medications and antibiotics, and switching to a specialty diet for life to help prevent the cat from blocking again.

Pictured here is Twilight, a 2 year old male cat, that was recently hospitalized because he was blocked and luckily his owners brought him in for treatment. After being hospitalized for several days, he was finally able to urinate on his own! His owners report that he is feeling much better now!
