Happy Hug Your Cat Day! 🐱 Did you know that there are scientifically-proven health benefits to cat ownership?

❣ Cat owners have a lowered risk of heart disease and stroke due to the relaxing effects felines have on their humans which minimizes stress and lowers blood pressure.

❣ A cat's purr creates vibrations at a frequency of 20-140 HZ, and studies have shown that frequencies in the 18-35 HZ range have a positive effect on human joint mobility after injury.

❣ If you spend 15-30 minutes a day petting or playing with your cat it can boost your mood! A result due to a rise in serotonin and a decrease in cortisol.

Showing your cat love and affection will let them know you care for them too - so give your cat extra lovin' today and give them a hug!

Georgie came to the Surgery Department at AESC for minimally invasive spay surgery. Because her breed is at higher risk for stomach torsion, we also performed a minimally invasive preventative gastropexy (stomach tacking) surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery reduces tissue trauma by making the smallest cuts possible and using a camera to visualize the necessary organs. This technique reduces pain, complication risk, and recovery time compared to traditional surgery.

Georgie also received a nerve block from our anesthesiologist and went home pain-free just a few hours later.

She was the perfect patient and we loved having her!

Etta came to our ER soon after ingesting pieces of a rug. Our team was able to induce vomiting to get the large pieces out of her stomach before they could cause an intestinal blockage, and she happily went home no worse for the wear. Etta: 1 Rug: 0.

Joey came to our Emergency Department after a rattlesnake bite. With a painful, swollen muzzle, he was promptly treated with antivenin to neutralize the absorbed venom. After staying in our hospital overnight on pain medication, he was able to go home the next day and is feeling much better!

Rattlesnakes come out between April-September and are commonly encountered on hiking trails here in Colorado. If your pet is bitten by a rattlesnake, seek veterinary care immediately. AESC is here for you and your pets 24/7: https://aescparker.com/service/emergency-critical-care/

While you're having fun with family and friends this Memorial Day Weekend, remember the following tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday:

⭐ Cookouts are popular this holiday weekend, but the food and drink you serve your guests may be dangerous for pets. A few especially toxic examples include alcohol, raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and avocado.

⭐ Never leave your pets unsupervised around a pool, lake, or ocean. If you take your dog on a boat, we highly recommend having them wear a floatation device and keep them from drinking salt water. Also, try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains potentially dangerous chemicals.

⭐ Be sure that your pet has appropriate ID tags and up-to-date microchip information. People leaving doors open and loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms can all increase your pets’ chances of escaping.

⭐ Be sure your pet has easy access to plenty of water so they don't get dehydrated - preferably in a shady spot, especially if they are spending a lot of time outside.

As a reminder, our hospital will be OPEN for the holiday.

Harley presented to the AESC Surgery Service with injuries to both of her cranial cruciate ligaments. She had a TPLO on both knees for stabilization. Her surgery went very smoothly. Her pain was managed with nerve blocks on both knees as well as post-operative treatments with our Rehabilitation team. Harley's scruffy face is the cutest and she has been a model patient! We are so glad she is back to her happy, active life.

05/18/2024

A hematoma (a blood blister) commonly occurs in a dog’s ear flaps. 🐶 This happens when a blood vessel in the ear bursts and bleeds into the space between the ear cartilage and skin. It can be caused by scratching, shaking of the ears, or bite wounds. Dogs with long floppy ears are at greater risk.

A hematoma should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the best medical treatment. It’s important to identify the underlying cause, which may be an infection or allergy in some cases.

If you suspect your dog has an ear hematoma, please contact AESC at (720) 842-5050.

Rory was presented to the AESC Surgery service in May 2023 after a month-long history of unresolving left pelvic limb lameness as well as intermittent right pelvic limb lameness. Using arthroscopy, our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Brand, was able to diagnose Rory with a cranial cruciate ligament rupture with a meniscal tear.

She had the torn portion of her meniscus treated followed by the TPLO procedure to stabilize her knee. Rory's surgery went smoothly and she recovered very well.

A couple of months later, Rory began limping on her right pelvic limb and she was diagnosed with a right cranial cruciate ligament rupture in addition to a patellar luxation. After surgery and recovery in that limb, she is now able to enjoy hikes again with her family!

Pool days are the best days! While a day at the pool should be fun and refreshing, we should always be prepared with these safety tips:

🐾 Limit access - Be sure to put a fence around a pool so your pet cannot fall in or jump in on their own.

🐾 Don’t let your pet drink chlorinated water - Always be sure to have fresh, clean water for your pets to keep them hydrated.

🐾 Keep an eye on pool toys - These toys are often choking hazards for pets.

🐾 Safely store pool chemicals - It is best to keep these chemicals out of reach.

🐾 Be aware - Pets can get overheated even when swimming. Always keep an eye on them and watch for any signs of this.

05/01/2024

Periodontal disease is inflammation in a tooth’s support caused by plaque (bacteria) and it can indicate bone loss. If left untreated, it can cause loose, painful teeth as well as internal disease.

Signs include bad breath (dog’s and cat’s breath shouldn’t have a disagreeable odor), inability to chew hard food, and/or excessive drooling.

To evaluate the severity and treatment needed, your pet must be examined by a veterinarian. Treatment can vary from teeth cleaning, polishing, fluoride treatment, deep scaling, and, in severe cases, surgery.

If your pet has a broken or injured tooth, it is important to seek medical care immediately. If you act quickly and your pet gets the right medical attention, they should recover well!

04/24/2024

Male cats can easily develop an obstruction of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body). Male cats (neutered or intact) are at greater risk for urethral obstruction than females because their urethra is longer and more narrow.

Obstructions are often the result of plugs of inflammatory material, mucus, crystals, or small stones (called calculi) that have formed in the kidneys and have passed down into the bladder. If a cat is suspected of suffering from this condition, they must receive immediate veterinary attention. Once the urethra becomes completely blocked, the kidneys are no longer able to remove toxins from the blood or maintain a balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. Without treatment, these imbalances can lead to heart failure — often in less than 24 to 48 hours.

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include:

🐈 Straining to urinate with little to no amount
🐈 Frequent and/or prolonged attempts to urinate
🐈 Crying out while urinating
🐈 Excessive licking of the ge***al area
🐈 Urinating outside the litter box
🐈 Blood in the urine
🐈 Increasingly distressed

If you suspect your cat has a urethral obstruction, immediately contact AESC at (720) 842-5050.

Dory is an adorable 4-month-old Italian greyhound puppy who was brought to us crying and not being able to use her front leg after her owner accidentally tripped over her.

Our ER team administered medications to help ease the pain, and after running some radiographs our medical staff was able to diagnose where and what type of fracture little Dory had. A cast was placed and she stayed over night with our team.

Dory has since had surgery with for her fractured leg and she is now on the mend. We wish her a healthy and speedy recovery!
