The Humane Society of Parkersburg is a private, non-profit open admission animal shelter serving Wood County, WV.

As Parkersburg and Wood County's only private, non-profit animal agency that also is open admissions, HSOP chooses to accept any and all animals in need. Through adoptions, education programs and spay/neuter efforts, HSOP offers proactive solutions to the pet overpopulation crisis in our area. Donor support and special fundraising events enable HSOP to continue sheltering and providing care for th

ousands of needy, unwanted animals each year. We do not receive any state or federal funding from any entity, nor do we receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Association. A portion of our funding does come from Animal Control services contracts with Parkersburg, Vienna, Williamstown and Wood County.

Shelter staff spotlight ♥️🐾

Life of a shelter employee has been kinda tough lately, well it’s always pretty tough (to say the least). We see sad things on almost a daily basis. We are no strangers to abuse, neglect, f***l matter, angry customers, hateful messages- the list goes on.

But every day this group of people shows up to the shelter and cleans kennels, feeds hungry animals, works with them to improve behavior, does play groups, dispenses catnip, investigates cruelty cases- and boy, does the list go on!

These people often don’t hear a “thank you”, but that’s okay, because as you can see from these photos, the animals provide us with all the thanks we’re looking for. To work in animal welfare, you must be strong, and your love for the animals must be even stronger. I’m proud to call this crew of humans my co-workers and I think our community needs to see the loving faces caring for the animals at HSOP.

Thank you, staff, for all you do! Every day brings its own set of challenges, and you all never shy away from them! ♥️🐾

🤎Kenai update! 🤎

The first picture is of Kenai when he was surrendered to HSOP on 8/7/24. The second two pictures are of him in his foster home yesterday where he is loving life with the other animals in the home ♥️.

Kenai has now been seen by two vets and there will be many more vet visits in his near future as he has lots of medical issues that have gone untreated for so long. He is currently being treated for his skin, extreme dry eye, severe ear infections, lymes disease, and has had biopsies of suspicious lumps sent out to labs to be tested.

Kenai has a long ways to go until he is considered healthy, and he may have other underlying issues that we’re still working to figure out, but we will not give up on this boy. Kenai had made great progress so far and has already gained 17 pounds!

Staff and volunteers have really put in the work with Rascal 💕

Rascal arrived to the shelter absolutely terrified. It took a lot of patience, effort, and love from staff and volunteers to get him to open up to us- and it was absolutely worth all the work!

Kennel tech, Leah Martino is working with Rascal on sit, paw, down, and roll over. All of which he has mastered! Although Rascal weighs 66 pounds, he is a huge lap dog 🥰. He also loves playing with other dogs and would make a great friend if you have another pup at home.

Rascal is two years old and will soon be neutered. Get your application in today to meet this handsome boy!

I wish the pictures you are seeing here were happy “before and after” adoption photos. Unfortunately, the first picture you see is of Kenai when he was adopted from a shelter in 2020, and the other photos are what he looked like earlier this week when he was surrendered to us by his owners.

This is not a post to bash his previous owners. That will do Kenai no good at this point. This post is to bring awareness to what we see on a daily basis in the animal welfare world. Kenai was emaciated, dehydrated, lymes disease positive, and has an obvious skin infection. Kenai was taken to a vet where he had to spend two nights slowly being rehydrated. He is now in a foster home and is being treated for his many issues.

In this foster home he will gain weight, be loved, and be treated for his plethora of issues. HSOP and his foster mom will do whatever is necessary to give this boy a chance to look as good as he did back in 2020.

However, we couldn’t do this without the support of our community. When you donate to HSOP, these are the kinds of cases that donation is being used for. Our special needs fund has been hit hard this month. In addition to Kenai, we have also treated 9 Parvo dogs 😔.

We know we sound like a broken record, but once again, we are out of large dog kennels 😔.

We have no kennels in the shelter for large dogs, but if strays come to our door tomorrow, we must accept them. If not us, then where would dogs in our community find refuge when they need it?

We have to get dogs out of the building and into homes, immediately! We can’t do this without your help, so if you’ve been considering adding a furry family member to your home- take this as your sign!

In the last week, HSOP has been hit hard with parvo. Poor Zeus came to us as a stray, and immediately our staff knew something was not quite right about him. He ended up testing positive for parvo and was taken to the vet for treatment. He is now on the mend, but his vet bill was nearly $900.

A litter of 8 puppies came to us last week and shortly after started to display the signs we are all too familiar with and also tested positive for Parvo. These puppies are currently all being treated, which will be a significant cost and take a heavy toll on our special needs fund.

We will always do everything possible for animals in our care who need help, but we cannot do this without the help of our community. HSOP is so fortunate to have such amazing supporters, so if you can, please consider donating to help Zeus and the 8 puppies.

Bella (aka Miss Bellies) has made herself nice and cozy in her new office!

Somehow, Bella has the infamous title of the longest waiting dog in the shelter 😔- but we’re hoping that moving her into the front office will work some interest! Bella is 1.5 years old and has been with us since February. Bella has been spayed and is fully vetted. Bella has been in play groups with other dogs and has done well! She would prefer a home with no cats though!

This picture says a lot.

HSOP staff member, Hayley Hufford, giving Bella some cuddle time, which is Bella’s favorite time ever💕.

This week has been tough for staff and volunteers. HSOP has taken in 54 animals so far this week. While we are happy that 28 animals have either been adopted or reclaimed, this still leaves us with a surplus of animals in our care.

Our shelter is full with big dogs and we have dog in our overflow building, which is almost out of kennels. Staff and volunteers are tired and worried- but we continue on because it’s what’s we do. But now we need your help. We NEED to get big dogs out of the shelter, today!
