We are a small family farm focused on Chincoteague Ponies and providing safe and comfortable boarding facilities. We are always looking for new ponies that will enhance our breeding stock and we take great pride in our Chincoteague Ponies. We offer Chincoteague ponies including Misty descendants and Chincoteague pony crosses. If you would like to pick a specific stallion/mare breeding please contact us we’d love to make your Chincoteague pony dreams come true.

Island Pony Dream Farm had another great year at Western States Horse Expo! Cutie and I enjoyed meeting so many new people and catching up with those we met last year. We look forward to being back again next year for another amazing event!

Chincoteague ponies VS Assateague ponies

The Virginia-Maryland state line cuts through the barrier island of Assateague. Although there are ponies living on both sides of the border, the two populations are not free to mingle with each other, and each are managed very differently.

Chincoteague ponies are the ponies on the Virginia side of Assateague. They are owned and managed by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, and they are rounded up annually for Pony Penning and the world famous pony swim. Their population is managed by the annual foal auction that keeps herd numbers in check and gives dozens of people each year the delight of pony ownership.

Assateague ponies (also called Assateague horses) live on the Maryland side. They are owned and managed by the National Park Service, who takes a very hands-off approach to the ponies. For many years, Assateague ponies were treated with birth control until the population was reduced to the goal range.

If you see a photo of a pony on a beach, rifling through a campsite, or hanging out in the middle of the road, it's a Maryland-side Assateague pony! Chincoteague ponies are fenced off of the road and beach for safety, and no camping is allowed on the Virginia side of Assateague. If you see a Chincoteague pony in the middle of the road, it's gotten loose from the fence and will soon be rounded up and put back again.

This beautiful photo of Misty was taken by Dr. Joseph Spies. It was published in Atlante magazine from Spain in September 1984.

Dr. Spies visited Beebe Ranch on June 12, 1969. Black and white photos from this visit are in his book Wild Ponies of Chincoteague. He wasn't able to find a publisher to publish his book in color so we're absolutely delighted to see a color photo from that visit.

One last little highlight reel from National Mountain Trail Championships as I reflect on the 2023 show season. We had a good year some highs and some lows. Now as I start to think about the 2024 show season I realize there’s a lot of work to do and many decisions to make. At this point I have no idea who I will even be showing, not to mention what or where. Definitely feel behind the eight ball already with my up and coming ponies. What is working equitation? Working Equitation is a competitive equestrian sport that originated in Southern Europe and combines elements of dressage, obstacle course riding, speed and sometimes cattle handling. It tests a rider's skills and their horse's versatility through various tasks. It's a unique and challenging discipline that requires both horsemanship and precision riding. That being said there are levels for every rider and all breeds and riding styles are welcome. There are 7 levels for working equitation each requiring an increased level of difficulty. For level 1 only the dressage test and ease of handling obstacles are done. This level is walk/trot Levels 2-7 also include a speed round and at some shows there is also a cattle handling phase. Cutie and I are currently showing at level 1 as it’s our first year. Below is a few clips from various shows and demonstrations this year.
