At Sunny Bear Rescue, we believe in doing everything we can to ensure the safety of the dogs we rescue, foster, and help in our community. That’s why we microchip 99% of the dogs we work with—whether they’re in our care or part of our outreach efforts. We don’t expect anything in return because microchipping saves lives.

A huge issue we see? People invest in microchipping their pets but never register the chip—which means if their pet is lost, the chip is useless! That’s why we go above and beyond by registering every microchip for you and paying for a lifetime registration through BuddyID.

If it's not one thing it's another.

If we are able to stay open we have to scale the rescue way back. Kai works for the Navy and was promised remote work when we bought this house in Partlow, VA. She is now being required to go into the Navy Yard (90-120 mins one way) 5 days a week starting Monday.

Having her able to watch the pack while she works has allowed meet & greets, adoptions, and transports to be possible.

Well without the extra body just to be here we can't help as much. I don't know what we are going to do. I honestly don't know the future of us. She will be gone 12-14 hours a day.

Meet Rouge, a stunning German Shepherd in desperate need of a temporary foster home! Her brother, Remi, has a pending adoption, and now Rouge needs a safe place to stay immediately.

Her current owner is about to welcome a baby home from the NICU any day now and needs to focus entirely on their child. Unfortunately, we do not have space to take her in right now, but we are fully committed to covering all of her needs—including food, medical (if needed), crate, toys, and anything else.

⚠️ This is a short-term foster need! We expect Rouge to be adopted within a week or two, so we just need a temporary loving home to keep her safe in the meantime.

At Sunny Bear Rescue, we always try to help when we can—especially when it comes to special pups like Marry Ann, Remi, and Rouge. These sweet dogs are looking for new homes due to circumstances beyond their control. Could you be their hero?

🌟 Meet Marry Ann 🌟
Marry Ann is a loving, well-behaved dog whose owner has been teleworking for years but is now being called back to the office—two states away. He wants what’s best for her, and that means finding her a home where she won’t be left alone for long days. She is not spayed yet, but her owner is donating to cover the cost, so her spay will be fully sponsored for her adopter!

These two beautiful dogs are loved deeply, but their owner is facing an impossible situation. Her daughter had a premature baby who has been in the NICU, and with the baby coming home soon, their focus must be entirely on their child’s care. It’s heartbreaking, but they need to find new homes for Remi and Rouge ASAP.

💔 Rainbow Update 💔

We truly thought we had things figured out, but Rainbow had another seizure today. It’s been about a month since her last one, and our hearts are breaking for this sweet girl. 💔

This means we’ll be moving on to the next step in her care as we continue working to understand what’s causing her seizures. She’s a little fighter, and we’re staying right by her side. 🌈💪

We appreciate everyone keeping her in their thoughts. We’ll share more updates as we learn more. 💕

We are 15 days through our 30 day window with nothing to show for it. People are agreeing to adopt then just stop communicating and never show up. I have to break our promise to these dogs to find them homes and start looking for other rescues to take them.

PLEASE STOP AGREEING TO ADOPT ONE OF OUR DOGS THEN DISAPPEAR. We are in hard times and people are playing with us. Why go through the whole adoption process just to ghost us?

Please if you make an agreement and no longer are interested just let us know so we are not turning others away saying there is a pending adoption.

We want to take a moment to apologize if our posts have felt heavy lately. The situation with the county has been overwhelming and heartbreaking. 💔

At Sunny Bear Rescue, our mission has always been simple: to save the dogs who are forgotten—the ones who rarely get a second chance. Did you know 98% of the dogs we take in come from puppy mills or are pulled off a kill list? 🐾

Despite the challenges, we’re committed to these lives and to making a difference. It’s not just what we do—it’s who we are. We also strive to give back to our community, as long as we have the resources to do so.

Right now, this is just too much. But we’re not giving up. 💪

Since we became official in June 2024 we adopted out 133 pets. All microchipped for free (for life) we also microchipped for 116 pets in the community for free (for life). You would think Spotsylvania County Government would want that help a for Spotsylvania Animal Shelter but they don't want us to spend money on the community anymore they want their money.

If there is a dog that needs rehomed in the county instead of us helping to keep the pet with the family because we can't afford another dog to feed and we run the risk of the county telling us to close at anytime, we will let them know the county would prefer the dog go to the shelter.

We can't get food assistance anymore because the contract we sign each time asks that we are in compliance with the state and local regulations. So we can't get food help anymore unless it is individual people. So if a needy family is in need of food we can't help them anymore because we won't have the food to spare. Maybe the county will buy them some food (yeah right).

I don't have a problem getting a permit if that is what is needed (still think it's way to much for a home based rescue) but why is it that we help out the community so much and the county says we have to give them a bunch of money that comes from helping the community or just close. We are a 501c3 nonprofit trying to make a difference and the county does not like it.

So this all just tells us that they do not want us to support the community they only want us to support their pocket book? We can't afford to do both.

Well the county said they are willing to work with us then they said stop then they said they are willing to work with us then they said stop. Then they said we can start the process and go on a payment plan but then said the process could not start until paid in full.

They can't decide even within the county on what we need or how to go about it because no other home based rescue in the county has ever been required to get this permit.

Can anyone tell me why we should continue support a county that has no love or support for it's rescues? I am so scared for the other rescues in the county.

Did you know they way the laws are written I can become a breeder and sell dogs and have a lot less to go through? I can foster as many dogs as I want for a rescue outside of the county with no permit. Animal control even says with the dogs moving in and out I don't even need a kennel permit. Why is the county making it so had for a 501c3 nonprofit to give back to the community?

They say they had a big meeting about this on Wed with several different departments and that everyone wanted to help us. Nothing came out of that meeting. They say payment plan but if we can't start till paid in full how is that a payment plan? They are also happy to say they saved us $200 on our permit price. I don't see that as support and trying to help us.

$2800 is a lot to a rescue and we can save a lot of lives with it.

I'm just so heartbroken over all of this and this honestly makes me want to move my home out of this county too. I feel like their priorities are all wrong.

Well the county called again and they are happy to say they saved us $200. The permit itself is $2,800 and that we have to pay the full amount to move forward.

They said it is the best they could do for us. So let me get this right? You take a nonprofit organization and you make them pay $2,800 from life saving care or food or whatever to get a permit. But you can give a giant waterpark tax exempt statues for years? or you can build a solar farm no one wants. Both of them got help from the county but the little guy that is making a difference we get $200 off. I see where their priorities are. I asked what all needs to be done to my property to get this permit and we are told nothing they just want their money.

We have stopped all support to Spotsylvania County and not sure we are going to start it again. We are looking at moving to another county that would welcome the support we give.

I have asked for an example of a home based rescue in the county with this permit so I can speak with them about their process. There is not another rescue in the county with this permit or currently being required to have this permit. They say they will only require a permit from them if they get a complaint against them. Talk about weaponizing the government.

🎉 Sunny Bear Rescue: Year-End Numbers Are In! 🎉 We are beyond thrilled to share some incredible milestones with you! While we’ve been rescuing animals for over a year now, Sunny Bear Rescue officially became an official rescue at the end of June 2024. Since then, we’ve implemented rescue management software (shoutout to AnimalsFirst) to track our efforts, and the numbers speak for themselves: 🐾 Adoptions: 122 🐾 We initially hoped to hit this number for the entire year, but this is just since June! Knowing we’ve helped so many dogs find their forever homes fills our hearts with joy. In December 2024, we also began tracking community outreach efforts like vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neuter services, and more. It’s amazing to realize how many lives we’ve impacted—not just for the dogs but for the families who’ve welcomed them. Here’s the truly incredible part: 95% of the dogs we take in are directly having their lives saved. Many come from kill shelters, puppy mills, or heartbreaking situations where they had little to no hope. Seeing them grow, heal, and thrive reminds us why we do what we do. This is all possible because of you—our amazing Sunny Bear Rescue family. Your support, donations, and love allow us to save lives and help these pups learn to trust and love again.
