Wolf teeth, protruding molars, overgrown molars caused from a missing opposing tooth, hooks etc. are all things that will cause not only problems but can also be very painful for the horse!

Did you know horses develop these razor sharp points called hooks? (Shown in the picture below) Not only are they painful for your horses they can cause cuts and holes in the cheeks they can also lead to performance issues, weight loss, dropping feed and many more!

Cox’s Equine Dentistry has Appointments available before and after Turkey Day! 🦃

C**t starting season and futurity seasons are nearing! Let's get those young horse’s mouths in tip top shape so they are ready to go!

Horses have two sets of teeth, deciduous (baby teeth) and permanent teeth. As the horse's mouth begins to change from baby teeth to permanent teeth, having regular dental care can help aid in removing painful caps and making sure there are no abnormalities, and if there are abnormalities they can be addressed early.

It is recommended for horses to be seen every 6 months starting their 2 year old year until all their baby teeth have shed and have been replaced by their permanent teeth, this is usually around 5 years old. This is especially important for horses in training as painful caps can cause reluctancy under the saddle, you cannot out train pain.

If any of these problems are arising, it is time to get your horses teeth checked to allow for these issues to be resolved. It is recommended that you get your horses teeth checked every 6 to 8 months. If none of these problems are arising but it has been over a year since their last float, it is encouraged that you still get them checked to ensure they are healthy and able to to perform at the highest level they can.

August is in full swing and fall is just around the corner and I have appointments available!

Just because the summer run is slowing down doesn’t mean routine maintenance should too. Let’s keep your horse feeling his/her best going into fall and winter!

Is your horse….

1. Loosing weight from possibly not being able to chew and process their feed well?
