It’s Mardi Gras! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
Because we’ve been training recall from the beginning, starting in small spaces with few distractions, we can feel confident about practicing without fences or leashes, “in the wild”. Regular check-ins on his own and a strong recall give Al (and me) lots of opportunities for fun!
Recall “in the wild”
Practicing without fences: safe because we’ve prepared well!
The Springer and the Parrot
Just before filming this, I told Al, "Mat" and he went under the cabinet where he couldn't see Jane (the parrot) playing - he made a mistake. I told him he wasn't using logic, and he immediately went to this mat! I cracked up laughing and wished I had caught that funny moment on video! Of course, he wasn't responding to my admonishment regarding logic - but it's more important for him to be calm and relaxed while Jane plays. He made a great choice!
One reason leash skills are important is because you might need to navigate stairs with your pet at your side, and you'd like to make it through without falling!
Training is fun and games. While playing around, you can teach your pet to solve puzzles and make good choices. That's what it's all about!
Oh, the things you didn't know you needed to teach your dog (or cat!) Learn them with us in The Mannerly Dog's Beyond Basic Manners Program. Here's one example of a group of skills we develop in the program.
Just a little intro video. . . .
