Roses are red, 🌹
Violets are blue,
Some flowers so sweet, πŸ’
Can be harmful to Lulu.

This Valentine's Day,
Keep your furry friend near,
But lilies and tulips, 🌷
Hold dangers, I fear.

So choose blooms with care,
For your pet's safety's,
And enjoy this special day,
With your valentine today! πŸ’—

With Valentine’s Day approaching, most pet parents know the danger chocolate poses to dogs, but this is a reminder that certain flowers can also be extremely toxic to your pets. These include lilies, chrysanthemums, baby's breath, daffodils and tulips. Rose petals aren't toxic, but keep in mind that the thorns can be dangerous if your pet steps on or swallows the stem. If you suspect your pet has consumed toxic flowers or plants immediately contact us right away.

Myth-busting Monday: Licking a wound helps it heal.

That is false! The truth is that excessive licking can actually harm your pet!

Constant licking can irritate the wound, slowing down healing and possibly causing further damage. Plus, a pet's mouth contains bacteria that can easily enter the wound and lead to infection.

Your vet will provide the best recommendations for your pet's specific needs and to prevent them from licking their wound.

We've all been there: You walk in the room and your pet is chewing up something that isn't their food. By the time you catch them, the item has disappeared. 😱 This is a very common reason why pets end up at the emergency clinic. Foreign bodies need to be taken seriously and acted on quickly. A veterinarian will have to find out what it was, how long ago it was ingested and if it can come out without doing damage. To get more information on the possible foreign body, imaging will be needed, such as an X-ray or ultrasound. Don't attempt to make your pet vomit it up. If the object ingested has sharp edges, vomiting could make the situation worse. In many cases, endoscopy or surgery will be the course of action.

If you suspect your pet has swallowed something they shouldn't have or you have witnessed them do so, contact us right away. We are always open!

Flat-faced breeds, such as Frenchies, Pugs, Boxers and Persians, have a unique anatomical structure that can lead to obstructed airways.

The signs of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) include:

β€’ Noisy breathing (snorting, snoring)
β€’ Difficulty breathing during or after physical activity
β€’ Heat intolerance
β€’ Gagging/choking
β€’ Bluish gums or tongue

BOAS can lead to serious health problems, but surgical intervention can ensure the well-being and happiness of your pet.

Don't let BOAS impact your pet's quality of life. For personalized guidance and advanced surgical solutions, consult your veterinarian for a referral to Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency today.

This is a reminder that both dogs and cats are known to ingest antifreeze (an unfortunately sweet tasting substance). This often occurs when antifreeze isn't stored properly or isn't placed out of paw's reach. Antifreeze can cause serious nervous system damage, kidney failure, and death. All it takes is less than a tablespoon!

If your pet has ingested antifreeze, there is an antidote! However, it is EXTREMELY important to get treatment for your pet as soon as possible. Contact us at (509) 547-3577 right away.

Meet Dr. Reisenauer!

Dr. Reisenauer has been a valued member of our team for the past 3 years. His lifelong passion for animals began on his family's small farm outside of the Tri-Cities. His early experiences raising bottle calves and 4-H pigs sparked his interest in treating and preventing diseases. When not at the hospital, he operates his small farm where he grows hay and raises cattle and horses. During the summer, you can find him putting up hay and enjoying the river. In the winter, he will be out checking cows on the Snake River breaks. Thank you for your great work Dr. Reisenauer!

Pancreatitis refers to the inflammation of the pancreas. The specifics of what causes pancreatitis is not known but we know there are risks factors including:

- Obesity
- A high fat diet or table scraps
- Some medications
- Certain dog breeds, such as English Cocker Spaniels, Schnauzers, and Shetland Sheepdogs

Unfortunately, the clinical signs are vague and nonspecific. Plus it is tricky to diagnose. Mild pancreatitis may be treated at home with fluids and anti-nausea medications. However, moderate to severe pancreatitis often requires hospitalization.

Anytime your dog develops vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and/or refuses food, we recommend that you come see us. We're open 24/7.

During the winter months, cats will often seek out any warm space they can find. Unfortunately, common cozy places include underneath a car and a warm car engine which puts their lives at risk.

Here are a few actions you can take to avoid these types of catastrophes:

🐱 Keep your cat safe and warm inside
πŸ’ Check on your cat before leaving the house or before leaving for a trip
πŸš— Make loud warning sounds before starting your car
πŸ“’ Give cats time to escape your car after you’ve made the loud noises
πŸ›Œ Provide a safer, alternative cozy spot for cats by setting up a cat bed or box with a blanket

Did you know? Dogs and cats are MUCH more sensitive to the THC contained in cannabis than humans.

Signs can occur anywhere from 5 minutes to days after a pet is exposed. Signs may include:
β€’ Lethargy
β€’ Overreaction to sounds
β€’ Dilated pupils or glassed-over eyes
β€’ Dazed expression
β€’ Difficulty walking
β€’ Vomiting

Other signs can include:
β€’ Low or high heart rate
β€’ Whining or crying
β€’ Agitation
β€’ Increased or decreased body temperature
β€’ Incontinence/dribbling urine
β€’ Tremors
β€’ Seizures
β€’ Coma

If you suspect your pet may have ingested cannabis , contact us at (509) 547-3577 right away.

Are you boarding your dog to visit family this holiday season? Or will your four-legged friend get to celebrate with you and play with your close ones' pets? In either case, keep an eye out for Kennel Cough. It is a very common disease in younger and middle-aged dogs. Since it is highly infectious, dogs acquire the disease by interacting with other infected dogs.

Kennel Cough is suspected in an otherwise healthy dog that is only coughing after recently interacting with another dog that was coughing. A virus is most commonly responsible for his or her Kennel Cough. However, if after a 10-day waiting period, the dog has not improved, come see us as it might be a bacterial infection.

Radiography, also known as X-rays, is one of the most common and valuable medical diagnostic tools. If your pet is sick or has suffered a trauma, X-rays provide a minimally invasive tool to help our doctors diagnose your pet. X-rays are also used in general wellness exams to diagnose potential problems before they become serious.

At Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency, we’re fully equipped to perform routine radiology services to identify many types of illness or injury such as arthritis, tumors, bladder and kidney stones, pneumonia, bone damage, and even identify foreign objects that may have been ingested.
