With temperature in the Tri-Cities rising this weekend, we want to remind pet owners to take caution with their animals in the heat. A dog’s normal body temperature is 100-102.5°F. Any time the body temperature is higher than 105°F, a true emergency exists.
Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds (Bull Dog, Pug, Frenchie, Boston terrier, etc.) are more at risk.
Avoid outside activities during the hottest parts of the day and never leave a pet unattended in the heat or a parked car. Offer plenty of fresh water through out the day.

Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency Service recently became an approved site for Penn Foster’s Veterinary Technology Program. We are currently sponsoring 4 of our very own Veterinary Assistants with Penn Foster. Our goal is to support them in getting credentialed as Licensed Veterinary Technicians after program completion and passing their VTNE! With the help of Dr. Mary Post and Benton-Franklin Humane Society. We are able to help in the program training for these individuals while also helping our community spay and neuter these adoptable pets! Thanks BFHS and Dr. Mary Post for helping in the support of the educational growth of our staff Vet Tech students! We appreciate you!

This morning we dropped off Tiger and Toby to Dr. Mary to be altered. While normally Doc would neuter these homeless pets at the shelter on her BFHS days, she has a new Vet Tech she is training on spay and neuters and these boys will help in the education process. Nationwide the need for veterinary medicine professionals is overwhelming and we are so excited for the steps BFHS can take to be part of the solution! Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency Service

🎃 We need your help voting! 👻

Mid-Columbia pes has done their very first door decorating contest. And we need the community’s help in voting for your favorite door! To vote; just like or react to the individual photo of the door you’re voting for!

Each door was done in teams of those individuals who work on certain shifts and days of the week!

The winning team will get a paid dinner at a restaurant of their choice! Which brings a true concept to “winner, winner, chicken dinner!” 😂 They’ll also win bragging rights for a full month till our next competition happens.

🩺Employee Spotlight! 🚨

Let us tell you about our newest team member!

We’d like to congratulate Heidi for graduating from YVC with her Associates Degree in Animal Science. She completed the 2 year Veterinary Technology program this June and is on her way to becoming a Licensed Veterinary Technician after passing her VTNE! We are so proud of her!

We met Heidi this spring when she chose us (MCPES) to do her externship hours for completion of her college program. She was interested in exposure to Veterinary Emergency Medicine and quickly fell in love with it! Choosing us as her career home after graduation! (We’re honored! 😎)

A little bit about Heidi is that she has two mastiffs named Paisley and Roscoe. She’s a power lifter in her free time and enjoys spending time with her family any chance she gets! She currently commutes 70 miles to work at our hospital. Making it a 1.5 hours drive! Which she states is worth it! But plans to relocate to the Tri Cities this summer.

Drop some suggestions in the comments of recommended places around Tri Cities she should look into! Help us make her feel at home in the new town she’s chosen for her new career path!

Thanks y’all!
MCPES Team!

Mid Columbia Pet Emergency Service has great news! We have hired both Dr Mary Post and Dr Lacy Owen. These additional daytime doctors to MCPES equal decreased wait times, increased experience and knowledge base, as well as an increase in types of species available to be seen. We are now able to offer a wide range of exotics healthcare on a limited daily basis. Please call ahead for days and times available! Since we are able, we are expanding to both Emergency Medicine and Urgent care from the hours of 7AM-3PM M-F (major holidays excluded). Consult prices during these time frames are $130. We are open 24/7 on an Emergency basis as well to provide the highest care available in the Tri Cities area.
Dr Post graduated from Kansas State University in May of 2020. She is a companion animal and exotics veterinarian with experience in cats, dogs, birds, reptiles, and exotic companion mammals and a member of AAV, ARAV, and AEMV since 2020. Dr Mary is passionate about facilitating the human-animal bond by providing information and best recommendations for her patients and supporting owner decisions regarding the care of their pets. Growing up in a family with a wide range of feathered, furred, scaled, and chitinous pets, she has been driven to help fulfill this role for other families with a similar desire to provide excellent medical care to all members of their family. In her free time Dr Mary enjoys spending time with her two daughters and her own cat and chicken friends. She looks forward to meeting you in the clinic soon.

Dr Lacy Owen originally started working for us on a relief basis but has since then decided to join us part time. She graduated from Washington State University in 2013 and has worked in both private practice as well as ER practices. She loves helping people and advocating for animals. She is devoted to the field of veterinary medicine. She spends her free time riding horses and playing with her 3 dogs. She loves all outdoor sports, especially cutting horses. We are excited to have added her to our team.

Do you have a Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breed of dog such as a French Bull Dog, English Bull Dog, Pug, or Shtizu, that has trouble breathing?
Does your dog snore really loudly? Does he have sleep apnea or choke periodically? Does he have difficulty in any sort of heat not overheating? We can help!

Mid Columbia Pet Emergency is now offering non-emergent surgery to repair this syndrome known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). We shorten the elongated soft palate with a cautery tool and we also open up the nostrils so air flows easily. The procedure is quick and patients are typically in and out within several hours. Recovery is also quick and immediately life-changing for these dogs!

Employee Spotlight!

Avery is our newest team member who joined us in January during the tail end of the chaos of our software Ezyvet conversion. She is a Licensed Veterinary Technician who moved here from Texas relocating her home to Tri-Cities . She has been able to share and collaborate her knowledge and experience in ER Medicine from her previous practice with such grace and enthusiasm. Making her a joy to work with! Her dark sense of humor and fun personality is just the icing on the cake compared to her compassionate patient care. Avery, you've been spotted for the month! And we appreciate you! -Teammates at MCPES 💕

Pictured below is Avery with one of her 6 fur babies named Gemma. Gemma is a very good girl and we love her work visits very much!

Heartworms can be spread to dogs, cats, and other animals through mosquito bites. These parasitic worms develop in major organs and can lead to cardiac arrest, liver failure, kidney failure, blood clots, and other life-threatening conditions. You can test your pet each year for heartworm infection so it can be diagnosed early. While treatment is possible for dogs, it is less effective in cats and therefore prevention is key!

You can learn more about the basics of heartworm disease and the signs in dogs, cats, and even ferrets here: https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics

With the rise of spring comes along an increase of pollen as flowers bloom and grasses, weeds, and trees flourish. Just like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. Here are a few tips to help reduce exposure during allergy season:

🌸 Bathe pets more often
🌼 Wipe them down after going outside
🌳 Wash their bedding weekly
🌻 Keep your home tidy (especially rugs and upholstered furniture)
🌷 Replace air filters

If you notice your pet is experiencing any consistent symptoms of irritation or discomfort, visit your veterinarian to help evaluate their condition and discuss treatment options.

Wrapping up National Pet Poison Prevention Week , here are our top 3 tips:

1) Gain knowledge on the common items that can harm your pets. This is a great resource provided by the AAHA: https://www.aaha.org/your-pet/pet-owner-education/ask-aaha/Household-Toxins/

2) Now that you know what items in your household can harm your pet, pet proof your home and immediate surroundings. Throw these items away or ensure they are out of paws reach.

3) Sharing this valuable information with your friends and loved ones will also help keep their pets safe from possible dangers.

BONUS TIP! 🌟 Be prepared by saving our contact information along with the ASPCA Poison Control Center phone number in case you experience a poison related emergency (or any emergency) with your pet.
