We had an amazing time last night at “An evening with Becky, Ben and Warwick”.

Held at Newcastle Upon Tyne, it was a fundraiser for here4horses. It featured Team Britain Olympic Dressage bronze medalist Becky Moody, the greatest showman himself Ben Atkinson and myself on stage answering questions.

It was compered by Wendy Suddes, founding trustee of here4horses, and the first part of the night was Wendy asking us questions, then after intermission we too questions from the audience.

I’ve know Ben for a while, and he’s an amazing human, and it was great to get to know Becky, she has such a great vibe.

Tonight we are traveling to Thirsk to do it all again, looking forward to another evening of the Becky, Ben and Warwick show !

It’s not about the grass…

Something that comes up a lot is people saying they have trouble training their horse because the horse lives on grass, or where they work with their horse is on grass.

I think many times this is because they wish the grass was not a factor, or they want to train like the grass is not there. This is just denying reality. Horses, and grass, are both nature, and if there’s one thing horses will teach you is that you can’t go against nature, you have to learn to go with it.

My son surfs, and the ocean is the same. Surfing is not fighting the ocean, it’s blending in with it for a harmonious outcome.

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be a presenter at Horsemanship Hub - Horsemanship Showcase in Leighton Buzzard, England (that’s a real place name in case you have the giggles right now). One of the things I did there was judge a liberty competition (along with the amazing Holly Barber and Ben Atkinson) which was on video. One of the competitors had filmed their video ON GRASS.

Liberty- no tack at all

On grass

With a (drum roll) - pony !

And this was not the advanced competition, this was the (can’t remember what they called it, maybe elementary or something like that). But that doesn’t mean what they did wasn’t advanced, and watching the video you would not know there was any grass present.

I heard a saying years ago that said “you need to be more interesting to your horse than grass”.

So the problem is not the grass.

The problem is not that you have a pony.

The problem is many wish the situation was different and fail to interact with reality. Understanding the nature of horses ( and the nature of nature) goes along way to having success with them.

We are all set up at the Horsemanship Hub - Horsemanship Showcase and ready to start tomorrow. My friend Ben Atkinson made the cover of the program, in this beautiful image taken here last year by Crispin Mould Photography.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone .

Usually this is a time to be thankful to be with family, but I’m in the UK for the Horsemanship Hub - Horsemanship Showcase this weekend, and very thankful to be asked to present here.

I had a little stroll around Camden Market,London today, bought myself a man bag to go with my man bun :-)

HANGING OUT WITH 3 STALLIONS

Probably the biggest change I’ve ever seen in horses from a small action is being present enough to engage with their muzzle every time I am around them.

This photo, taken last March is of my wife Robyn and 3 of our horses who were all stallions at the time.

Rey, on the left, is 8 years old and when we first got him he was very obedient, and VERY internal. Once he came out of that shut down state he was very interactive with his muzzle (I have quite a few videos on YouTube of him like this), and when I say very, I mean very !

The middle horse, Bodhi, was 2 at the time and from the time he started interacting with humans, was very mouthy, and I spent a lot of time interacting with his muzzle whenever he offered it.

Rupert, on the right, was probably middle of the road when it comes to mouth ones, and was 3 when this photo was taken.

This was one of the first nice spring evenings we had this year, and we went up to hang out with the horses. Robyn sat I this stump and these 3 stallions came up and hung out with her.

There was no fighting each other.

There was no biting Robyn.

Robyn wasn’t having to fend them off.

There was just peace.

Something most people would love to have with their horses, but you have to pay for it with presence. Not in the moment of the photo, but the months and months of meeting the need to engage until it’s no longer there.

I’ve often said we need less correction and more connection. I can only imagine how horses would be if this was the norm instead of the dominance paradigm that is so often spread, which actually creates the problems that many people want to fix (I used to be one, so speaking from experience here).

My friend Dan James from Double Dan Horsemanship accompanied me on the Gaucho Derby in Patagonia this year. We took lots of footage, and Dan took our footage and put together a documentary called "Fast horse are hard to catch".

It premiered at the EQUUS Film & Arts Fest last weekend and won best film in the "Adventure Documentary over 60 minutes" category.

Im unsure where it's able to be viewed yet, but it's certainly well worth watching.

Congratulations Dan, you now now add documentary film maker to your list of talents!
