Update time! June is doing great!
In case you missed June’s story June came to Redwings in February of 2024 ---> Just before the holidays in 2023 Animal Services in Northern California were contacted by a concerned citizen that reported a neglected pony. When the officers arrived, they were shocked to see a little miniature horse in very bad condition. The poor pony was thin with horribly overgrown hooves and worst of all she had been attacked by a dog that left her with an open and infected wound on her hind leg.
Thankfully the owner was willing to surrender June knowing that he could not care for her. She was then immediately taken to the vet for treatment. At the vet hospital, June was quickly admitted, and the team began treating her injuries. The vets found a gaping wound on her left hind leg with extensive muscle damage. Due to the injury, June was partially dragging her left hind leg and had reduced mobility. In addition to the wound, the vets addressed June’s overgrown hooves that were 5” beyond normal break over, which is a significant amount considering her small size. Her hooves were also diseased, showing evidence of laminitis and hoof wall separation. The vets cautioned that June was at risk of colic and further laminitis issues that could be fatal.
June was bandaged and put on strong antibiotics and has made a miraculous recovery. Once her hooves were trimmed, she started to move more comfortably, she was ready to come to Redwings. When she arrived, June was timid and shy, but now she is gaining confidence and looks forward to coming out of her stall for walks and grooming. June’s wound has almost completely healed. She will always have a big scar and a funny gait due to loss of range of motion from scar tissue, but she is happy, safe and healthy at Redwings.

Kasia Roether, a local trainer and life coach, has been generously donating her time and expertise to help Redwings horses transform their lives. Her patience, kindness, and dedication have made an incredible difference for so many of our equines, including Ela.
Ela came to us completely feral, rescued from a feedlot in September alongside her 4-month-old foal. Rounded up from the Apache Reservation, Ela was terrified, underweight, and in desperate need of care. Kasia has been working to build Ela’s trust, gently guiding her on the journey to becoming halter-broke and learning to feel safe around people.
Thanks to Kasia’s efforts, Ela is starting to make breakthroughs—powerful steps toward a future with a loving family. We are endlessly grateful to Kasia and all our volunteers who dedicate their time to making second chances possible for horses like Ela.

🌟 Fleur Found Her Forever Home 🌟
When Fleur arrived at Redwings, her fear was palpable. Dumped at an auction by her previous owners, her history before rescue is a mystery. What we did know was that this sweet mare had been through too much.
When Fleur stepped off the transport, she was so terrified that we couldn’t even remove her halter. The halter had been left on so tightly that it caused painful rubs and hair loss on her nose and poll, and if it had stayed on any longer, it could have led to open sores.
For the first few weeks, Fleur kept her distance, unsure of the people around her. She was nervous, hesitant, and clearly struggling to trust. But with patience, kindness, and consistency, Fleur began to blossom. Slowly but surely, her true personality came out, and it was nothing short of amazing.
Today, Fleur is a completely different horse. She’s friendly, outgoing, and always the first to greet you at the pasture gate. Her transformation has been incredible to witness, and we couldn’t be prouder to share the news that Fleur has found her forever home!
Her new family is so excited to welcome Fleur and continue giving her the love and care she deserves. We know she’ll thrive in this next chapter of her life, and we are overjoyed to see her find her happy ending.
Fleur’s journey from fear to trust is a reminder of the power of compassion and second chances. Thank you to all of our supporters for making stories like Fleur’s possible.
🧡 Wishing Fleur and her new family a lifetime of love and happiness! 🧡

🐴👅 #TongueOutTuesday featuring our sweet and silly girl, Only With You, or YooHoo!
This 4-year-old Thoroughbred mare has already overcome so much. Rescued from an auction in Southern California, she was at risk of entering the slaughter pipeline after no one showed interest in her. Our partner rescue reached out to us and a few days later, she found her safe haven here at the sanctuary.
YooHoo is spending her winter relaxing in a big community mare pasture, making new friends and soaking up the good life. This spring, she’ll start her training under saddle, and we can’t wait to see all the potential this darling girl has to offer.
For now, she’s showing off her fun and cheeky side for #TongueOutTuesday. Isn’t she just the cutest?

🎉❣️ SAFE AT LAST ❣️🎉
We are thrilled to share that as of last week, Malik, Pirate, and the elderly blind mare are now safe and beginning their recovery at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, thanks to the efforts of Auction Horse Rescue (@auctionhorses) and the incredible generosity of our supporters!
🐴 Malik, the Arabian cross, arrived in critical condition with a severe shoulder infection that spread deep under his skin. Immediate veterinary care saved his life, and while his infection is healing, his leg injury will require attention soon.
🐴 Pirate, the partially blind OTTB, is in need of surgery to remove his painful blind eye. For now, he’s on pain medication and building his strength as he recovers in quarantine.
The elderly blind mare is also safe. While she cannot be shown publicly, she is receiving the care she desperately needs.
To everyone who has donated—thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You’ve truly saved their lives. Their road to recovery is long, and your continued support ensures they get the medical care they need.

Byron’s Story: It’s a familiar tale for many. When a family faces health challenges, caring for beloved horses becomes impossible. That’s what happened when a young man sought help for his grandmother’s six purebred Arabian horses after she was hospitalized. The horses were in rough shape, standing in deep mud and feces, worsened by heavy rainstorms in California.
Sadly, one horse died before we could reach them, but Redwings stepped in to rescue the five surviving mares and one stallion, Byron. Their lack of handling made rescue difficult, especially for two skittish mares who panicked when approached. With gentle coaxing and patience, we eventually got the horses loaded, ensuring their safety.
At Redwings, the horses found relief in better living conditions, fresh water, and good meals. Despite their thin bodies, they were in relatively good health. Over time, Byron and the other horses regained their health and adapted to life at Redwings. After just three months, the horses are thriving, happy, and healthy. It was a difficult decision for the family, but ultimately, it was the most loving thing they could do.
So many of you have been following Becca’s story which is a testament to the resilience of the horses we rescue and the power of compassion to create change. Watch till the end for her today!
This 31-year-old Arabian mare came to Redwings in heartbreaking condition. After her beloved owner passed away and her family struggled to provide care, Becca was left severely emaciated with a body score of just 1. She was weak, frail, and in desperate need of help.
When we arrived to rescue her, Becca’s spirit shone through her frailty. She eagerly hopped into our trailer as if she knew her life was about to change for the better. Over the following weeks, she began a strict refeeding program and received the love and care she desperately needed.
✨ Today, Becca is thriving!
Her coat shines, her eyes are bright, she has gained her weight back. She loves her scratches. Watching Becca gallop through our sanctuary with strength and joy is nothing short of miraculous. Her transformation is a reminder of why we do what we do—and it’s all made possible by supporters like you.
As we celebrate Becca’s journey, we invite you to be part of more incredible transformations this Giving Tuesday. Your generosity provides horses like Becca with the care and second chances they deserve.

Giving Tuesday is a global movement that celebrates generosity, kindness, and the power of community to make a difference. It’s a day when people from around the world come together to support causes they care about.
At Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Giving Tuesday means hope for horses who have endured unimaginable hardship, like Gwen and Heartbreaker.
Gwen’s Story:In the fall of 2022, Gwen was surrendered to Redwings after her elderly owner could no longer care for her. Gwen was in terrible shape—emaciated with a body score of 2 and hooves so overgrown they curled up, making it painful for her to walk. Thankfully, her owner recognized Gwen’s need for help, and we were able to bring her to the sanctuary. With proper nutrition, care, and hoof trimming, Gwen has been given a new lease on life.
Heartbreaker’s Story:Heartbreaker, a 35-year-old Arabian, endured years of neglect and cruelty. On the 4th of July 2023, he was discovered chained in the Southern California desert with no food, water, or shelter. Emaciated and discarded, he was rescued by Animal Services and brought to Redwings thanks to the intervention of a compassionate former board member. During his time with us, Heartbreaker received the urgent care he needed, including dental work, blood tests, and a carefully monitored refeeding program. His courage and resilience remain an inspiration.

This Giving Tuesday, join us in giving the gift of hope, healing, and a brighter future to horses in need. To
In the summer of 2022, Duquesa was rescued from heartbreaking conditions in Kings County. Emaciated and suffering from neglect, she bore the physical and emotional scars of her ordeal. Most shocking was the embedded halter on her jaw—left on for so long that her skin had grown around it. A vet had to carefully cut the halter away, leaving painful, infected wounds.
On top of this, Duquesa was battling a urinary tract infection and a severe case of rain rot. Yet, despite all she endured, her gentle and loving temperament never wavered.
Now safe at Redwings, Duquesa is thriving and quickly became a favorite among staff and visitors alike. Her resilience reminds us why we work so hard to give horses like her the second chances they deserve.
This #givingtuesday , your support helps horses like Duquesa heal and find love in a safe, nurturing environment. Every donation and share makes a difference. 💕
