https://www.redwingshorsesanctuary.org/ Redwings Horse Sanctuary began in May 1991 as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization in Carmel, California, with a mission to end the abuse, neglect, and slaughter of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, and burros through rescue and foster care. In its first year, Redwings rescued 15 equines from abusive or life-threatening situati

ons. Redwings staff then rehabilitated the equines and matched them with carefully-screened adoptive homes. Redwings first rescue was a beautiful Thoroughbred gelding named Island Fighter. Redwings received a call from Fresno County to alert us about a horse in an auction pen with a fractured shoulder. Redwings originally planned to purchase the horse to humanely end his suffering, but the horse had spirit and a veterinarian was called in to assess the severity of the horse’s injury. Island Fighter was in luck, the vet determined that with a long rest and rehabilitation period the young horse could make a full recovery. The staff at Redwings renamed the horse “Sam” after Congressman Sam Farr who has been a huge supporter of Redwings. Redwings also addressed educational, financial, and other factors behind equine neglect. The organization initiated several programs including an equine education program for new owners, and an equine medical assistance program for owners with low incomes. In the fall of 1992, Redwings broadened its scope to include permanent sanctuary for those equines who were unable to be adopted, ensuring them a secure and life-long home at the sanctuary. From 1992 to 2000 Redwings leased a beautiful ranch overlooking the ocean off Highway 1, in Carmel. In 2000 Redwings moved to a 167-acre ranch in southern Monterey County, California. The entire Redwings family of 90 equines, staff members, and some volunteers completed the transition to the new sanctuary in March 2002. Today 86 horses call Redwings home. We have everything from the smallest miniature horse to the largest draft horse. Our herd of 9 burros from Death Valley are at the entrance of the sanctuary to greet all the staff, visitors, and volunteers each day. Our herd of Mustangs from the Pryor Mountains of Montana are very popular with guests, and our draft herd, rescued from the Premarin auctions in Canada, stand regally at the top of their hill and keep a watchful eye over the ranch. Redwings has a foster to adopt program to ensure that all our horses go to approved and loving homes. Potential homes must fill out a foster application and have a home inspection before being approved to foster a Redwings horse. The mandatory one year foster period enables Redwings staff to keep a close eye on the foster horse and make sure they are happy, healthy, and a good fit for the foster family. After a year of successful fostering the horse is then available for adoption by the foster family. Those horses who are not adoptable due to age, illness or injury have a permanent home at the sanctuary. In 2014 Redwings was accredited by CARMA (California Race Management Account) and is an approved after care partner for Thoroughbreds that raced in California. In 2015 Redwings was accredited by TAA (Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance), a national organization, as an approved aftercare facility for retired race horses. In 2016 Redwings finished its application for accreditation with GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries), an international organization, we completed our facility inspection and are awaiting our status.

Fun fact: Thoroughbreds can reach speeds of up to 40 mph! 🐎💨 That’s faster than most cars on residential streets. Talk about horsepower! Photo Credit: Redwings Horse Sanctuary - California

Workshop Limited to 8 participants.

Where will the Workshop Take Place?

We will be photographing the horses (and burros if you wish!) at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, located at 6875 Union Rd. Paso Robles, CA 93446 The Sanctuary is about 20 minutes from town.

What's included in this workshop?

AFTERNOON WORKSHOP ~ The PM workshop gives us the opportunity to shoot with beautiful end of day light and possibly some sunset colors, depending on the weather. We’ll start in the early afternoon with a review of equine photography, then we’ll show you how to take portraits using the shade of a barn and natural lighting along with post processing edits to perfect the final image. After an early dinner we'll head out to explore the sanctuary and find horses in pastures to photograph while the light gets better (sun lower on the horizon). We’ll wrap up when we run out of light!

UPDATE!!! We did it and the horses are safe at Redwings!!! Please see our newest post for their update!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Repost from Auction Horses Rescue -->

🚨URGENT RESCUE

They are:
🐴 A half blind OTTB/Thoroughbred gelding named Political Loophole who raced at Los Alamitos,
🐴 Arabian x gelding with a deep shoulder wound and swollen leg with its own wound,
🐴 An elderly blind mare, dumped by her owner with direct orders to never be rescued. (Yes, there are people who sell their elderly blind horses with orders they ship direct to slaughter!!)

All 3 are in need of urgent vet care.

The deadline is Thursday, 12/19, but we hope they don’t have to wait that long. As is, we pray we can raise it in time.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has committed to take them into their stellar rescue program, if we can fundraise their bails and hauls from feed lot to their rescue facility. They are best set up for the major rehabilitation care these three need.

Anything raised over the $3100 will be contributed to these 3 neglected horse’s medical expenses.

Although we are proactive about humane euthanasia when necessary, these three horses are very sweet and have a vibrant spirit. They’re not ready to give up. They want to live, and love. And we can give them the best chance at that, if we can act now.

In order to rescue the elderly blind mare, we had to promise not to reveal her identity… her owner would rather she go to slaughter than humanely euthanize her. It’s only by extremely hard work that we were able to negotiate her safety.

We are very grateful for Redwings acceptance of these 3 lost souls.

With AHR, they most recently rescued Pastorate, Only With You, the Friesian x mare, and Molly mule that we fundraised for with our supporters help, in August of this year. Also for 2024, earlier in the summer, Mysterious Storm, Gambler’s Gold Rush, and Turk’s Delight. We sacrificed a great to get all 7 horses safe, 7 horses that are thriving today under their care.

With all of the horses Auction Horses has rescued and rehabilitated this year, we are forever grateful to the other rescues we partner with. So even when we are full, we can still help horses get out of the hellish reality they find themselves in, when the humans responsible for them, are no longer there for them.

Group Photo from the Equine Photography Workshop at Redwings Horse Sanctuary - California in Travel Paso Robles yesterday. We raised $1,600 for the horses! This sanctuary provides homes for horses rescued from neglected and abusive situations. Thanks to my partners Deb Hofstetter and Cathy Wallace for helping to host this workshop. I'm turning over the reins to Deb to produce the future workshops here, as I start focusing on other things. It has been an honor to host several here. I am blessed.
