"While humans have domesticated animals for hundreds of years, only most recently have we seen such an exponential increase of plus-sized pets. While it’s hard to say no to those precious faces when it comes to food, it’s important to practice discipline for the safety and well-being of our beloved companions. It starts with recognizing there is a problem. Pet owners think their obese dog or cat is a normal weight, making confronting obesity difficult. No one wants to think their pet is overweight, and overcoming denial is our first battle." Currently, more than half of all domestic dogs and cats are clinically overweight, which is to say their body condition score is above a five based on the wsava.org Body Condition Score model. That amounts to nearly 49 million dogs and more than 50 million cats who are a bit portlier than their peers. "Obesity in pets means more than just lazy animals. Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) data show obesity leads to reduced life expectancy, diminished quality of life, chronic inflammation, orthopedic disease, kidney dysfunction, respiratory disorders, cancer, and more. To give our pets the best life possible, we have to help them avoid packing a few extra pounds. Not only will it be hard for your pet, but it will be hard for you to watch, not to mention these conditions can quickly become very costly. The good news is that pet obesity can be easily prevented by taking a few cautionary steps, thanks to APOP."*

October 1st is National Black Dog Day! National Black Dog Day was created to encourage the adoption of a dog in the darker shades and celebrate those who own them! Unfortunately, like their feline counterparts, black dogs are less likely to be adopted for no other reason than their coloring. Regardless of behavior, size, breeding, personality, or age, the phenomenon persists. Black dogs have long gotten a bad rap with superstitions. In ancient myths and legends, they were considered unlucky due to some believing they were the “spectral” dog, otherwise known as a “barguest/barghest” (From Northern English Folklore). This mythical black dog was monstrous with huge teeth and claws. But pay no heed, if you read the Harry Potter books, you know the spectral dog is actually a pretty nice guy! Even throughout history, black dogs haven’t ALWAYS been unlucky. In fact, many cultures believe black dogs are the ultimate symbol of good luck! For instance, if you happen across a greyhound that is black with a white spot on his forehead, it’s just about the same as winning the superstition lottery – you’re virtually assured of good fortune. So today let's celebrate these beautiful canines!

Just a reminder, do NOT leave your dog in a car; if it's hot outside, it's even hotter inside. Parking your car in the shade or with the windows cracked does little if nothing to alleviate the inside heat. Always leave your pets at home if they are unable to go inside with you.

UPDATE: This program is now closed as funding has been depleted. If you have already submitted to the Google Form, you will receive reimbursement. Congratulations to the many pet cats whose lives just got a little better!

EDIT: We want to be very transparent that this is for PET cats, not community or feral cats that must be trapped and taken to vet/clinic in a trap. There are other programs for these cats; this program is to specifically benefit pet cats and their owners. Need info for feral and community cat programs? Private message us.

If you are unable to make a lifetime (10-15 years) commitment, please make the responsible choice not to adopt. If you need puppy love but can't make the lifetime commitment, we would recommend you volunteer for a local shelter or rescue.

Ouch! With the extreme heat right now we recommend not walking your pets in the hot pavement. Remember if you can't walk barefoot without getting burnt they shouldn't either.
