Congratulations to Sarah on her adoption of Odeon! After 8 years in our Sanctuary, we decided to give this guy a go and we’re so happy we did. Unsurprisingly, “Odie” quickly became a barn favorite!

We are so lucky to have Dr. Bill Bradley and the excellent team at New England Equine Practice to help us find the best second careers for our horses. Odeon is grateful too; the picture says it all!

It takes a village to keep Akindale running in top shape! Not only do we have over 100 retired racehorses in our care, but we are also tasked with meticulously maintaining over 300 acres of land. Thank you to Filiberto, Miguel, Pilar, and Daniel for keeping the ship afloat!

Check out Anne and Coltandmississippi! This pair just attended their first clinic with Isidro Espinoza and had a blast. “Cam” spent quite a while in our Sanctuary before meeting Anne and it looks like the wait was worth it!

Oh Donna has settled right in at her new home alongside another Akindale graduate, Barbara P! These girls were fast friends and we are thrilled to see them together. Congratulations to Erin Cecchini of Five Star Performance Horses on the adoption of our lovely Donna!

Fresh from a relaxing vacation in the Sanctuary, here’s Homeofthe Lombardi! This guy retired from racing back in 2020 and had a few knee chips removed before arriving at Akindale. Lombardi told us he wanted a little more time off before going back to work and we agreed. Finally, he is back and better than ever!

Lombardi has been working consistently under saddle and aims to please. He is an easy guy to have in the barn and will be the first to check your pockets for treats. In the right program, Lombardi should have no limitations from his previous injury. Check him out on our website and send us a message for more info!

Sanctuary Spotlight: Wayward Son and Gus!

Wayward Son (Left) is a fan favorite. You may recognize him from one of our photo sessions with the talented Jim Craner. Waylon can often be found tearing through the Sanctuary fields; he’s always the one to get everyone running!

Gus was one of the last horses to be born at Akindale in 2016 and was never started under saddle. Gus hangs out rent-free in our Sanctuary; unemployed and living the dream!

Odeon has been a breath of fresh air at our Training Barn! After just a week under saddle since his racing career (we won’t tell you how long ago that was…), he went for a solo hack around the farm on the buckle. Talk about “been there, done that”!

Akindale will be holding a Spring Open Barn on May 11, 2024. Stop by anytime from 12-2pm to meet some of our sweet adoptable horses and many of our amazing staff members. It was so fun seeing so many faces at our Valentine's Open Barn, and we're hoping to see some new and old faces this time around!

Meet Heard! This pocket-sized filly came to Akindale in December and enjoyed a quiet winter of groundwork basics before being started under saddle this spring. She has lots of go, a lovely movement, and a quick brain. Stop by our Open Barn on Saturday, May 11th 12:00-2:00 to meet Heard along with the rest of our adoptable horses!

How’s this for retirement? Every year, we move our sanctuary herds out of their fields for a few weeks so we can do some much-needed spring cleaning. The boys on Akindale Road wasted no time stretching their legs!
