MYTH: If someone touches a baby animal, the mother won’t come back.

No doubt this myth was started to prevent people from messing with wild animals because we really shouldn’t be handling them. The problem is, most people believe it and won’t try to reunite babies with their mothers, if they or someone they know, touched the baby.

The gloves we ask you to wear are to protect YOU. Mom will often come back, even if her baby smells a little different. This goes for baby birds too!

Please spread the word. We can save lives simply by informing others. 🙏

The story of Sweetpea

Dick Clark, the Rutland Animal Control Officer (now retired), and a small group of concerned citizens founded Sweetpea For Animals in September 2000 after the rescue of a very sick and scared dog who had been used as a breeding factory. She was given the name Sweetpea — we promised her a better life and she inspired our rescue and its logo.

Sweetpea's story - although much of it remains unknown - began in May 2000 when Clark found her in Rutland State Park.

The abandoned dog, thought to be between 9 and 11 years old, was pregnant, thin and ill. Sweetpea - who would lose her pups to infection - was treated for a uterine infection, heart and pulmonary artery enlargement due to heartworm, intestinal parasites and pulmonary abnormalities.

No one knew where the dog came from, how long she had been in the park or what she had been eating while she lived there.

After a long recovery period, including a month of intensive care , Sweetpea was adopted into a loving family at the Treasure Hunt Farm in Rutland.
Sarah Williams, new owner pf Sweetpea changed the dog's name to O.D. - "Other Dog."

O.D.'s transition to her new home proved to be a grim reminder of how the expectant, sickly and nervous dog probably was forced to survive in the wild. Williams, along with her staff at Treasure Hunt Farm, worked with her for about a year until the dog felt comfortable around people and the farm animals, becoming a friend to most all.

November 11, 2003, however, Sweetpea was diagnosed with permanent renal failure. Following the veterinarian's recommendation to end the dog's suffering, Williams agreed to have Sweetpea guided over The Rainbow Bridge.

We believe she lived between 12 and 14 years. We are grateful for her life and for those who cared for her.
Her inspiration lives on – we promised that no more animals in our area would be seen as “disposable” on our watch.

NON RIDERS TAKE NOTE!!!!!

Riders know this, but the general public may not be aware.
If you have never been part of a benefit ride you should know at least this:
Bikers PAY to ride. Something they could do for free.
But they choose to pay to ride, the fee can be anywhere between $10 to $20 or $30 per person.

Not only do they pay to ride, they usually drop a lot of cash for the extras. Raffles, 50/50, and silent auctions, even Toy Runs for kids....

When you see a group ride by, they are probably riding for charity/great causes/benefits! Instead of getting upset because they blocked traffic or caused you a slight delay, please remember this: They are very generous people!!!

Give them space and your patience. It sometimes helps to have a little reminder about things.

So please be patient and smile when you see them because they are doing something good for someone you may know, or for a good cause.

Did you know that groundhogs are an intricate part of our ecosystem? The digging of their burrows helps to their loosen and aerate the soil. It also helps to turn the ground, by bringing deep seated and rich soil up to the surface. Their f***s inside their burrows actually helps to fertilize the soil deep underground.

They are also an intricate part of the food chain and are hunted by several predator species.

Many other small mammals, amphibians and reptiles rely on abandoned groundhog dens, for shelter.

In spring and early summer, mother groundhogs are raising their families. The removal of a female groundhog from your property can mean certain doom for her little ones.

Despite what some may say, a groundhog’s burrow rarely causes any issues with the foundation of someone’s home. They simply aren’t large enough.

If you must evict a groundhog from your property, we suggest placing dirty kitty litter or ammonia sprinkled rags down the burrow. Groundhogs react to a strong urine odor as a potential predator and this will often encourage them to leave.

Please wait until late summer or early fall to do this so that babies are old enough to be in their own.

To keep groundhogs out of your garden we suggest a 3-4 foot mesh fence that is wobbly. It must be wobbly! They are good climbers, but the movement will make discourage them from trying.

We also suggest putting that fence about 6 inches under the ground and have it in an “L” shape facing away from the garden. This way, when they try to dig under the fence, they will hit a wall of resistance.

They are fascinating creatures and don’t mean you any harm. They are trying to get by, just like me and you.

Let us all practice tolerance. Let’s live and let live…

Our Story

Sweetpea Friends of Rutland Animals, Inc is a non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organization, dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of stray, abandoned and surrendered companion animals in central Massachusetts and beyond. We are located on the border between Rutland and Paxton, MA. Thanks to public and corporate donations, we can nurse the needy animals back to health, update their vaccinations and get them spayed/neutered as needed before placing them in warm, caring permanent homes.
