Bee Creek Quarter Horses and Cattle

Bee Creek Quarter Horses and Cattle We raise Ranching Heritage Quarter Horses and cattle on a farm near Pearl, Illinois.

We raise American Quarter Horses that are athletic, cowy, fun to ride, yet gentle enough to be family horses. Our mares are mostly roping and foundation type riding mares with the conformation and gentleness that helps them raise nice quiet colts with good bone. Our stallion is South Texas McCoy, he represents a good combination of cutting (his sire is South Texas Acre) and reining (Hollywood Jac

86) bloodlines. He gives his colts the quickness and cow tracking ability that makes them fun to ride and competitive.

Shared from our friend, CJ--"I would like to extend my sincere appreciation Central Illinois RIDE Events/Rikki Saskia for organizing a thoroughly enjoyable and well-planned event at 4 Rocks Arena, featuring Clinician Matthew L. Jobe. The group of 10 participants were extremely helpful and supportive." It is all about having fun with horses and horse people.

Some days just don't go well. Blew out a trailer tire on the way to the vet office with 2 horses on. Limped on in only to get bad news from Dr. Marvin. Good news was all the offers to help, Robert Sheppard brought tools and got the spare on. We all made it home safely.

We picked up a couple of red angus bulls from Paul and Tammy Baier in Orient, Iowa. The front bull is a yearling, the other is a 2 year old. They will get to spend a month or 2 in the corral before they meet their herd.

Goober is giving Dusty "the look" that says "Don't even think about touching my grain." These two were best buds and shared everything until we put a couple of new bulls next door. Now they have to do some strutting and pawing to look tough.

Eileen cleaned Copper up and made him look fairly presentable. It might as well be a mug shot, Copper has not been behaving in the either pasture. I'll give him credit for not panicking while stuck in a fence for a few hours and all the other horses had left him. But why did he even stick his front legs through a barb wire fence?

Goober bull (on the left) wins the prize for biggest (1800 lbs.) near-death experience last week on the farm. I went to feed on a pleasant sunny day and there was Goober flat out and bloating up with his legs through the pipe fence. He probably started out sun bathing, but didn't allow enough room to get up properly. Bill got the skid steer and was able to scoop under him and pull him away from the fence. Then Bill used the skid steer bucket to carefully lift Goober to his feet. We were so relieved to see Goober stand with assistance and gradually balance on his own. He's still slow from the experience but has not missed a meal yet.

Foaling season started, but not a good start. Shiner's foal died shortly after it was born. When a foal or calf dies, we grieve, but then we go into action. It is kind of like our own version of CSI. Why did it die? Was it preventable? What can be done to prevent future losses?

Notice to cows: If you are going to baptize your calves right after birth, make sure it is a warm day and the water isn't too deep. I saw this new calf (still wet) laying comfortably in the gravel near the creek crossing, but where was his mother? Then I saw ol' 263 about 100 feet upstream, standing on top of the 8 foot creek bank. She was looking down into the water (with some concern) and right in front of her were calf sized skid marks down the bank into about 2 feet of water, barely missing a tree and some debris.

This might be a POA (Pony of the Americas) hanging out at the corral. Sapphire has enjoyed running around the corral with a couple of cows. We're hoping she has potential for small riders, her manners have been very good so far.

This is how bad table manners start in calves. The calf on the right pushed the middle one, then the middle one stuck his foot in the feeder. Then they all posed for a photo as if nothing had happened.

Our Story

Bee Creek Quarter Horses have cattle working bloodlines, but we emphasize family friendly horses. All of our foals are haltered and led before they are weaned. Our foals have a soft eye, friendly attitude, and a curious mind. If your family is ready to add an equine athlete that is versatile and easily trained, visit our farm and pick out your next Ranching Heritage (eligible) prospect.
