Meet Scooby! He was found on the side of the road by one of our clients about a week ago & is looking for his furever home! He’s approximately a year old and other than being underweight appears healthy. He’s as sweet as can be and his foster parents say he gets along well with other dogs & is progressing with crate training. He’s had his first round of vaccines and has been dewormed. If interested please contact us at 281-485-2496.

Who needs an emperor in their life?

Meet “Kuzco Llama 🦙.” He’s a very PLAYFUL, red Husky puppy needing a furever home. His foster mom, Erika, states that Kuzco loves love! He wants to be your best friend/shadow. Listed at about 1 year-old, completely vaccinated, neutered and heartworm negative. Crate trained, potty trained! He's learning to be around cats but would probably be best in a home without them. He’s dog friendly but needs his boundaries met. Kuzco 🦙 is a very sweet and loving boy who wants to play and be with you! He needs an active and patient family!

Can you please meet/share Kuzco? He wants his furever home 🏡!

Myth: “My pet is too old to undergo anesthesia.”

While age can certainly place a patient at an increased risk if it has been associated directly with organ dysfunction, the adage that “age is not a disease” cannot be truer in this situation. There have been tremendous improvements surrounding anesthesia for pets –reversible anesthetics, exponential improvements in nerve blocks and continuous rate infusions, and anesthesia monitoring comparable to human medicine! Add in pre-anesthetic blood work, pain medications given ahead of time to lessen postoperative pain, and injectable antibiotics and pain medications to take that added stress away from pet parents, and we can create a much more safe and comfortable anesthetic experience for pet parents and pets of any age!

Myth: “My senior pet will vocally tell me if they feel pain.”

This was a misconception of not only pet parents, but also of veterinarians and veterinary professionals for many decades! It is only as of late that we have made significant strides in the research behind truly understanding how dogs and cats show signs of pain. Contrary to this myth, it’s rarely through vocalization, especially in cats.

We must look at two different areas: body language and what’s happening within the body’s physiologic parameters. If the dog or cat is with us in the exam room or hospital, we can detect things like tachycardia or tachypnea, especially when a joint or area of the body is moved or palpated, hypertension, and sometimes even hyperthermia! However, what we look for more frequently, and something that can be assessed by pet parents too, is changes in body posture behaviors and, even more, a refusal to perform normal body postures.

In dogs, these include decreased activity at home, difficulty rising, jumping, or climbing stairs, overgrooming a specific area of the body, inappetence, shaking, flattening the ears, and keeping an arched back. Many of these changes are similar in cats, but cats will also tend to stop grooming all together and develop a matted hair coat, have a grimaced facial expression, and may hide more and become less interactive. A bonus tip…… We encourage pet parents to take videos of their pet at home and sharing that with your veterinary team. Many pets, cats especially, aren’t as relaxed in the veterinary hospital to demonstrate these behaviors.

Myth: “My senior pet urinates in the house/misses the litterbox simply because they’re old.”

Pet parents observe frequent urinary accidents in the house, and their assumption that this was just what happened when pets get old. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. There are many medical reasons that dogs and cats urinate in either inappropriate places or inappropriate amounts, and we always begin investigating by running a blood and urine to screen for any signs of infection, organ dysfunction like kidney disease, or hormone associated diseases like diabetes.

In full transparency, there is ONE scenario in which age can be closely related to inappropriate urination and that’s cognitive dysfunction syndrome, or CDS. While more recognized in dogs, it can occur in both dogs and cats, and patients start to act confused, have different sleep patterns, and forget house training or how to use the litterbox. While this syndrome is almost always associated with advanced age, it IS a medical disease and there are some strategies we can suggest helping support and slow down progression.

If your pet has increased urine or inappropriate urination, schedule an appointment today to have an examination done with a veterinarian.

Myth: “My pet is too old for a dental cleaning.”

One of the most common fears of pet parents continues to be the risks associated with anesthesia and a professional dental cleaning. However, with periodontal disease affecting > 85% of pets over the age of 3, creating negative consequences in many parts of the body, and being a leading cause of pain in both species, we feel obligated to educate our clients. Not only can we see more evidence of attrition (wear and tear) during these senior exams, but we commonly find crown fractures, resorptive lesions and other painful oral lesions. Periodontal disease is a leading cause of lethargy, hyperoxia, weight loss and even behavior changes. Cats are notorious for hiding disease and dental disease is one of the first places to look when a cat’s behavior is “off” to pet parents.

Shoutout to my amazing veterinarians for their genuine care to my Lynx cat. And to CVA3 Erika at Pearland Animal Hospital for 3 days of continuous care to Lynx and a couple of late night checks on him with me. She gets a break now but he misses her dearly. He’s learned to bond with her. As much as we love her, I hope his time with her is limited due to going home soon hopefully next week. Thank you Erika for all your gentle care, love and support. -your boss and loving Hospital Administrator K.Hart .

One of our clients is looking for a home for these sweet babies.

Per our client:
Were found underneath their shed, approximately 8 weeks old, were bottle fed until they were old enough to eat on their own, great with eating dry food and using their litter box, great with kids, play well together and with other cats, cuddle bugs, and have had their first set of vaccines.

Please call our clinic (281-485-2496), or contact us via messenger if you are interested or know of someone who may be.
