March winds are here in full force. At least some of us are happy about it! The winds are making the goats full of spunk. They have these bursts of energy every few hours or so when they venture out of the barn. We were feeling pretty accomplished ourselves last night as we had things buttoned up around here before the winds were really expected to gust. Doors latched and secured. Tools and wagons in the barns, etc. But the one gigantic farm fail was not putting extra stakes in the ground for the porta potty. You can't win them all on the farm! 😂

The loss of funding for this amazing program is affecting so many small scale farmers, organizations that support regenerative and local food, and folks who are food insecure. Please share it too! I never get tired of these sunsets on the farm. Not just because of the beauty that they bring but of the stillness they bring to the farm and all of its inhabitants. It usually signals the last scratch behind the ears for this one until morning as she becomes focused on her guardian duties. I have been thinking a lot lately about how buying and supporting local seems even more important than ever. When I started my farm it was out of a desire to have more control over what I was eating (and my life!), what I wanted to support with my dollars (environmental and animal welfare), the belief that keeping money in my community mattered, and supporting other small farmers who truly cared for the land and their animals. Not to mention cute goat faces:) All of those reasons matter, along with so many more on why the simple act of supporting small and local businesses matter for you and your family. A small business is the first to offer a donation or support a local cause in your community and bring uniqueness to your neighborhood. Which is one of the reasons I love local! Shopping small also helps to combat insane prices, corporate greed, and billionaire tax breaks. I would much rather support a small community farmer than one of the corporations that is not located in my small town.
Whenever you can buy essential purchases at a small business rather than chain store. It matters. ❤️

This one is always on duty. She is sensitive, thoughtful, and cautiously calculated, all good traits for a livestock guardian dog, in my opinion. It's good to see her take some time to play this evening in the snow. Nightfall is when she stays super alert all huddled in a gigantic goat pile in the barn with her sister, Trudy. The barn is stocked with so much straw for extra bedding, hot water to slurp up like tea, heaping piles of yummy hay, and every crack covered up to prevent any drafts of blowing snow. We are a well oiled machine from years of experience in this type of weather but these below zero temps always keep me a bit on edge. This type of weather was made for Great Pyrenees that originated in the cold & snowy mountains. These girls would rather sleep in a pile of snow but tonight l'm making them stay indoors with the goats. Stay cozy, everyone.

The weather has been unbelievably beautiful the last couple of months and for that we are grateful! The lack of rain though has left most of our pastures dry & crispy with not much left for the goats to eat. Thankful for the woods and some of these "reserve" areas on the farm to extend the grazing season and help to make our hay last throughout the winter & early spring. This type of grazing helps the soil and our goat's health too. Pretty much a win - win. It's great to hear them munching away in the fresh air too!
