I don’t miss much about my days in the horse industry, other than getting the messages like this ❤️

I loved breeding horses, studying the bloodlines, making the perfect pairing, and then seeing that baby hit the ground. That gave me a real thrill.

This filly is out of one of my favorite mares I’ve owned, Elan Painted Me (Elans Pl***oy, Ms Dry Stinger) and by Chics At The Doc (a stallion I helped manage for a few years). This is her first ride!

Remember that early Jason Aldean song, Fly over states? At the time I never really understood that song. I thought I did, but it’s taken many years for the true meaning of some of the lyrics to truly hit me.

Being from Mississippi, we grew cotton and soy beans, but not to the tune that I knew what real farming entailed. Then I moved to Minnesota, and I saw. I don’t think America can truly grasp what it takes to feed America until you drive through the heartland. Until you drive for hundreds of miles and see nothing but fields of crops, feedlots, chicken houses, ranch land- you cannot even fathom what it takes to keep produce, meat, and groceries on the shelves. Fast forward to this past year and I learned a lot more about farming and harvesting. Cole Woolever has a CDL and works for a trucking company, until 3 months ago I had no clue what a harvest season was, let alone the manpower and hours it takes to make it happen. For 3 months straight these guys work 7 days a week and pretty much from sun up to sun down and even into the night hauling harvested crops to elevators around the area. I learned what the phrase “harvest widow” meant and I learned that for 3 months the rest of your life comes to a halt. To say I have a new found appreciation is an understatement. This appreciation goes from the farmer, to the field hands, to the truck drivers, to the elevator workers, and to the people at home waiting on these people. It’s truly a selfless job that no one thinks of, because none of these folks are getting rich. These are considered your blue collar guys- your tradesmen guys. They all work together so that America can not only have food, but just take a gander at the ingredients on many of your items, they are made in part by the products these people sacrifice time to cultivate. In some ways, I’m so thankful for all the traveling my life has brought me, its broadened my mind and introduced me to so many people and things that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to learn.

Cole’s grandad used to farm and harvest crops. He did it with a plow and this massive team of horses. It’s truly amazing to think that this is how America stayed fed at one point in time. Now, in his older age, he has much smaller teams and enjoys giving wagon rides at large community events. I got to ride along for a few hours over Thanksgiving holidays at the Stroll on State festival. He thinks he’s going to teach me to drive… I told him he had to take a road trip and witness my driving of a vehicle before he trusted me to be in control of driving animals 🤣

Cole sent me a photo of his grandad a while back. It was a grainy photo and I wasn’t sure much could be done, but The Handmade Heifer worked their magic and they were able to help me create the most perfect gift. Cole’s grandad doesn’t have Facebook, so it’s safe to share this story ahead of the gift arriving, but we truly can’t wait to gift the most beautiful blanket to his grandad as a keepsake of his younger days.
