Making the crew their food for the week. Do you feed kibble, raw, or do you cook for your dogs? I’m trying a gently cooked diet for the boys to see how they react to it. This mess consists of a dozen eggs from our chickens, a hunk of salmon, chicken livers, ground turkey, and egg shells. I will be mixing in h**p, sea kelp, veggies, and rice (quinoa for Rigby because he hates rice) after this part cooks. If you know me, or have followed me for a long time, you know I am always looking for the best diet for the crew. and in their newest book, have a lot of advice for gently cooked diets. ❤️ Check the book out, your dog will thank you.

HERE’S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO ADD FRESH “HUMAN FOOD” TO YOUR PET’S KIBBLE

Today, ninety-six percent of pet owners around the globe are feeding dry commercial pet foods. Of those 96%, there is a large majority that believes dried commercial pet food is really all their pet needs and would never stop to consider the benefits of adding fresh “human food”.

(“Human food” definition in this article: clean sources of meat-based proteins and some organic plant matter, not beer and nachos 😉)

There are many reasons why some of these pet parents feel this way, however the most popular reason today seems to be the 50-year-old rumor that is in existence and still spreading.

You know the one: “Giving your animal table scraps is bad!”

How or when did this terrible rumor start?

Well, if we go back in time, research shows that shortly after the invention of processed pet foods, manufacturers were having a hard time convincing pet parents to make the switch from foods in their refrigerators to their commercial pet foods.

So in 1964, the pet food industry, along with the PFI, joined together with a whole bunch of marketing dollars and launched one of the most influential campaigns the pet world had ever seen: the “Ban All Table Scraps from your Pets’ Bowls” campaign!

Through thousands of newspapers, magazines, and news stations, the public was warned about the dangers of table food scraps or “human food” and the importance of feeding “processed” commercial pet food. From there, the giant smear campaign took off!

Not only did this clever campaign work, but it was so impactful that now, 50 years later, folks are still in fear of offering anything that is not labeled pet food.

SO IS IT A GOOD THING TO ONLY OFFER YOUR PET DRIED KIBBLE?

Not according to ongoing research it isn’t, especially with today’s cancer rates being 1 in 2 dogs!

In a 2005 study conducted at Purdue University on Scottish Terriers, the results showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of transitional cell carcinoma (aka bladder cancer)!

In the study, dogs ate a diet of dry commercial pet food, while some got an assortment of vegetables added to the mix at least 3 times per week.

When the study was concluded, according to the researchers, they weren’t really shocked by the results.

Here’s what they found:

Dogs that ate any green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, had reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer by 90% and the dogs that consumed any yellow – orange vegetables like carrots reduced the risk by 70%!

Seriously! A lousy carrot helped smash the potential of cancer.

( http://ilarjournal.oxfordjournals.org/content/55/1/100.full ) (Raghavan, Knapp, Bonney, 2005) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/16013542/

Yes, of course cats are obligate carnivores (must have meat to survive) and our dogs are facultative carnivores (carnivores with omnivorous potential if circumstances demand) so offering clean meat-based protein sources should always be top priority and essential.

However, because today’s world is ever-so changing due to factory farmed livestock being fed genetically modified grains and our planet being contaminated with every type of pesticide, fungicide and larvicide, the importance of fresh, organic plant matter to help detox the body couldn’t be more crucial.

So if the “cancer reducing benefit” doesn’t tickle your fancy enough to convince you to add any “human fresh foods” to your pet’s bowl, then maybe think of it this way:

How bad would it suck if someone forced you to eat dry processed foods your whole lIfe?!

Helping Dogs Cope With Loss 🐕💔

Losing an animal companion can be difficult, including the dogs in the household that lost their best buddy. Most grieving dogs show changes in behavior, such as decreased interest in playing, becoming more fearful and even eating less. WANT TO HELP YOUR DOG LIVE LONGER? TRY THIS!🍵🐶

When designing our blueprint📝 on how-to raise the oldest dogs in the world for our new book, The Forever Dog, we focused our research heavily on science-based longevity foods, herbs & supplements that can be added to your dog’s diet. Foods that could not only help delay canine aging, but can help nourish and bullet-proof💥 your dog against disease!

No matter which longevity scientist we interviewed, the one suggestion that made every researcher’s top 10 list of what to add to a dog’s bowl was “camellia sinensis,” aka Green Tea!🍃

In fact, the latest study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows people who drink green tea at least three times a week can live longer and suffer a lower risk of cardiovascular disease!

That’s because Green Tea is rich in polyphenols, and contains a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which are found to help prevent cell damage, reduce inflammation and can help fight cancer while providing other health benefits, of course.

But what about dogs? Are there any studies? Shockingly, we found a bunch!
The most recent showed that Green Tea🍵 acts as a therapeutic agent for obesity, liver inflammation, and fat degeneration in dogs!

While many of us make juices or smoothies, most of us don’t think about using concentrated medicinal infusions in our food. But in the dog world, medicinal teas make inexpensive, polyphenol-rich toppers (“gravies”) that infuse longevity benefits into every meal. So, it should come as no surprise that green tea has been used in pet food for quite some time, but not in quantities to confer health benefits, so why not add some at home?

All teas can be steeped as usual, then cooled off prior to adding to your dog’s food. Green teas should be decaffeinated, and preferably organic.

Alternatively, add warm tea to your dog’s dry food and allow the therapeutic brew to marinate with the kibble prior to feeding, creating a super-saucy gravy and adding hydration (dogs aren’t designed to eat low-moisture, dried food their whole lives; teas help!). If you feed dehydrated or freeze-dried dog food, reconstitute them prior to feeding with tea!

Recipe for Organic Decaf Green Tea🍵 for Pets🐾:

1.Combine 3 cups of purified water and 1 tea bag or 1 tablespoon of loose tea leaves🫖
2.Steep for 15 minutes
3.Remove the tea bag or use a strainer to remove the tea leaves🍃
4.Store the tea in a covered, preferably glass pitcher in the fridge for up to 3 days

Add the following amounts of decaf green tea to your pet’s morning and evening meal:

• Cats — 1 tablespoon
• Small dogs — 1/8th cup
• Medium dogs — ¼ to ½ cup
• Large dogs — ½ to 1 cup

This is one simple and powerful way to add longevity benefits to your dog’s bowl! Looking for more ideas or recipes? Check out our new book with dozens of other suggestions in the Forever Fluids section of our book, available for pre-order now by clicking here: www.foreverdog.com/book

We are guilty. I use a ceramic bowl. Why? Because my dogs like to drink out of the toilet. Seriously, I thought that maybe if I used a ceramic bowl, they would stop. Well, it didn’t work. 😂

What type of dog water bowl do you use? 🐶💧

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🥣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nose👃🏼 and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

So stainless steel🍴 bowls are the safest, right?

Well not so fast…. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowls😫. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled “Toxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🚫 that won’t leach contaminants over time. The Forever Dog is available now for pre-order, worldwide, check out the www.ForeverDog.com/about

Fish is a great option- but in small quantities. I opt to buy canned sardines (from the grocery store) to feed to my dogs as a special treat once in a while.

Fish is a very popular ingredient in commercial pet food. But did you know that most of the seafood used are leftovers from fish farming industries, and could be harboring toxic metals?

Many times every week I tell owners of reactive dogs the same thing: Please stop worrying about taking your dog for exercise walks. Maybe it is time to stop walks for a while. And here is why.
If your dog crosses his threshold reliably when you walk him - whether that is because he reacts intensely to every dog in the neighborhood or he is highly anxious about traffic noises or he cannot be around people at this point - then every time you expose him to his trigger in a high intensity HIS REACTIONS WILL GET WORSE.
Stress responses rarely disappear into thin air one day. Rather, the dog goes through a cycle of encountering his trigger - being stressed - reacting intensely - and becoming EVEN MORE LIKELY to react badly the next time.
What you might be doing by continuously walking your reactive dog in an environment that’s full of trigger is to actually ingrain and strengthen his reactive response.
Now, I am all for exercising dogs both physically and mentally. But we need to look at this in the bigger picture. What good does it do if your dog had a 2 mile walk but he “flipped out” 10 times during it? Is this really the level of adrenaline you want him to associate with a stroll around the neighborhood?
Should we not weigh the dog’s longterm mental wellbeing against the benefits of physical exercise through walking?
(By the way - an on-leash walk is not actually “tiring physical exercise” for most healthy adult dogs anyway)
For most dogs with reactivity problems, we need to cease all “random” exposure to triggers and work on them in isolated, well-planned out settings. This could mean not walking your dog in your neighborhood at 7pm when everyone else is out. Or maybe not at all in your neighborhood - and instead in a less busy area nearby. Or maybe it means finding other forms of exercising his mind and body for a while. Please do not feel like you need to walk your dog in the presence of his triggers daily.
You know your own dog best. Does he seem highly stressed after his walks because he encountered a dozen scary and difficult situations? Then that walk is probably not worth it.
Be your dog’s advocate - if you listen to your intuition you probably already know if he should be walked or not.

We are a small-batch, oven baked, preservative-free company.

Fleabag Bakery LLC. is licensed and registered in the state of Florida, and holds a Feed Master's License to produce, sell, and distribute dog treats. *A portion of our profit and unsold treats are donated to underfunded county shelters and local rescues.
