Today the animal community lost a legend, Karen Pryor.

Karen was a trailblazer who used her Biology degree from Cornell and Operant Conditioning to develop modern day Positive Reinforcement training techniques. She has changed the lives of countless trainers, animals, and facilities around the world with her revolutionary training concepts.

Karen's research and training was both influential and instrumental in the training modality that Pets for Vets® uses today. Pets for Vets Founder and Executive Director, Clarissa Black (pictured here with Karen) embodies her teachings and trains her team with the same training methods. Following in Karen's footsteps, Clarissa attended Cornell University and then pursed dolphin training in Hawaii (as Karen did) before starting Pets for Vets®. Clarissa also graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy as a Professional Dog Trainer.

Karen's legacy will live on through her organization (Karen Pryor Academy) as well as the countless human and animal lives she has touched.

For 2025, I will be offering group classes quarterly 🙂 The 4 offerings listed are for my Level 1: Beginner Communication Course. Each course meets for 1hr a week for 6 weeks and have a capacity for 3 dogs (will add more classes if needed). As always, adopted dogs receive a 50% discount, as do HDH Regulars.

Congratulations Teh (Alley) & Naz (Jason)

Adoption announcement! This one is twice as happy! This couple wanted to adopt a pup in need. When they met Alley, she was scared and shy and her AGB foster mom was working tirelessly to break through her shell. They knew immediately that they wanted to add Alley to their family and felt a friend would help her adjust. Well, big gentle Jason was also looking for his forever home. The couple knew Jason would be the perfect companion for Alley. These dogs had never met until the day they were adopted and they are now best friends at their new home in Yulee, Florida.

Their dad explained their new names. Tehya Aponi (Alley) is Cherokee for Precious Butterfly and Nazshoni Wi (Jason) is Cherokee for Fierce Protector Sun. The family knows it will take time for Alley to come out of her shell and they see that shell slowly disappearing every day. She will live up to her name. Naz instantly made himself at home. He’s the resident lizard hunter, patrolling his domain the moment he goes outside and ensuring that lizards seek cover during his daily walks. Naz is showing his big sister what it’s like to be a pet in a home filled with love. Naz loves his walks and gets very animated and vocal when he wants to go. He loves his car rides too - those rank right up there with having his ears scratched, treats, back rubs, treats, cuddling, treats, taking a nap on his mommy and daddy’s bed, and more treats. Naz likes to eat and so far they haven't found anything he doesn’t like. Teh watches all the activities going on around her, enjoys scratches behind her ears, and treats, with cheese and peanut butter being her favorites. After losing their beloved rescue that was with them for 10 years, their new dad tells us, "We’re thankful to AGB for allowing Teh and Naz to rescue us; it’s a great feeling to once again walk in the door and be met by wagging tails and bright brown eyes."
