With a highly trained staff and a dog lovers mindset, Camp Scotty opened in the Summer of 2015 with an open door policy to dog owners to discover what makes Camp Scotty so different than the typical Kennel in Birmingham. Meet the owners and employees of Camp Scotty, take a tour of their state of the art dog service facility, and you'll quickly see why. Steven Scott, the founder of Camp Scotty had
a dream of creating the best kennel in the Birmingham AL area. With a focus on making Camp Scotty more of a "Retreat for Dogs", Steven has accomplished just that. Camp Scotty dog boarding facility has a huge outdoor play area with 3 fenced areas for different size dogs or to separate more aggressive dogs, etc. If the weather turns, Camp Scotty also has large indoor play area so the dogs can hang out with their friends and stretch their legs a little. :)
Camp Scotty is located in Pelham AL just off Pelham Pkwy (Hwy 31) just south of Hoover AL. The entire building was constructed with providing dogs a state of the art atmosphere when it comes dog boarding, dog daycare services, dog grooming, DIY Baths (self wash enclosed tubs) with heated dryers, and full service dog training from pre-puppy training to advanced behavioral classes for dogs. Our staff and ownership have the experience necessary to deal with all types, sizes and shapes of dogs. We offer security cameras that serve as webcams for you to keep an eye on your pooch in the event you want to check in on them as well.

I would have made a post sooner but I wanted to reach out to some colleagues in my industry up north and out west on what they have seen and been experiencing since Canine Influenza Virus (CIV)has been becoming more common over the last few years. We have not been requiring the CIV vaccine and currently will not be making it mandatory but are going to "highly recommend" it for any frequent boarders or daycare dogs or any "higher risk" dogs (Older dogs, immune compromised dogs, and dogs with heart and respiratory conditions are at particular risk for CIV. Dogs with short, flat faces (brachycephalic breeds), such as Boston Terriers, Boxers, Pekingese, Pugs, and Shih Tzus, are also at higher risk.).
Even though we use top of the line cleaning solutions, have UV-C bulbs in our HVAC units (which cleanse all viruses and bacteria as it runs through our air conditioners), and have UV Air X air scrubbers running all the time there is still opportunity for those things to affect us too. I have talked with facility owners that have had only vaccinated and boosted dogs for CIV and the entire facility still gets sick with only vaccinated and fully boosted dogs in house.
Currently there are many pet facilities (vets, boarding kennels, dog parks, and humane societies) overrun with Kennel Cough and Canine Influenza (H3N2) locally and across the country. Kennel cough is essentially bronchitis in a dog and is highly contagious and there can be complications but they are rare. Dog Flu on the other hand is something that is more severe and much more transmissible with a smaller incubation period and more likely to have potential complications like pneumonia afterwards.
Kennel Cough Symptoms,
The primary symptom of kennel cough is a non-productive and persistent dry cough. It usually sounds like a goose honk or as if something is stuck in your dog's throat. Runny nose, sneezing, lack of energy, decreased appetite, and mild fever are other symptoms.
Dog Flu Symptoms,
The signs of this illness in dogs are cough, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge, and reduced appetite. The severity of illness associated with canine flu in dogs can range from no signs to severe illness resulting in pneumonia and sometimes death.
Most dogs recover within 2 to 3 weeks. However, some dogs may develop secondary bacterial infections which may lead to more severe illness and pneumonia. Anyone with concerns about their pet’s health, or whose pet is showing signs of canine influenza, should contact their veterinarian.
How serious is canine influenza in dogs?
The percentage of dogs infected with this disease that die is very small. Some dogs have asymptomatic infections (no signs of illness), while some have severe illness with infection. Severe illness is characterized by the onset of pneumonia.
How is canine influenza virus spread?
Almost all dogs are susceptible to canine flu infection, and virus infection tends to spread among dogs housed in vets, kennels, and shelters. Canine flu is thought to spread mainly among dogs through respiratory droplets produced during coughing and sneezing from infected dogs, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. Therefore, dog owners whose dogs are coughing or showing other signs of respiratory disease should not expose their dog to other dogs or to cats. Clothing, equipment, surfaces, and hands should be cleaned and disinfected after exposure to dogs showing signs of respiratory disease.
How can you help?
If your dog is coughing leave them home and don't try to take them to board or daycare or the dog park anywhere.
If you are coming to board or do daycare with us or anywhere else please try to get your vaccinations updated a week or two ahead of time. If you go to the vet who may have sick dogs in house and they are breathing that same air and happen to get sick themselves they will be somewhere spreading sickness while it incubates in their system.
If your doggy daycare or boarding facility closes down and lets you know they have had confirmed cases of kennel cough or CIV or is asking you to send your emergency contact to come get your dog because they have potentially been exposed to flu or kennel cough please DO NOT BOOK THEM WITH ANOTHER FACILITY because it is an inconvenience to you. That is the fastest way to keep this spreading in the community.
If you are going to get vaccinations updated please do see if they are able to do it in the car vs inside the vet clinic. That way it limits your exposure to anything that might currently be there.
If your dog does have kennel cough or CIV please let your vet know and do not bring the dog inside the vet office unless they request you to. Vet clinics do overnight boarding for healthy dogs as well as dogs that have had major trauma, open wounds, snake bites, dehydration, and numerous other things. If a dog in recovery was to get canine flu or kennel cough it would potentially make their recovery much more complicated.
Any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to find the answer if I don't know the answer to it.
Very sorry for the extended read. Feel free to share with any of your pet parent friends.
