Josh and Alyssa, Owners of The Wayward Canine, had a successful weekend trialing three dogs of their own scoring high in both the obedience and protection phases.

Training a dog to reach this level demands the ability to understand canine behavior, maintain strong control over triggers and stressors, and foster a positive relationship with your dog throughout the training process. If your dog trainer isn’t accomplishing things with their OWN dogs or isn’t actively testing their work at a more demanding level, it may be time to seek out a different trainer. When looking for a dog trainer, inquire about their achievements with their own dogs and observe whether those dogs appear happy and eager to work with them.

Tapatio in need of a place to call home!

Tapatio is a loving, cuddly, goofy boy who loves pets and snuggling on the couch. He has great bite inhibition, takes treats/bones/toys/etc. very gently, & no food aggression. He loves carrying around towels/shirts/shoes/toys but doesn’t destroy them. Good with cats and female dogs. Is dominant with other male dogs so a home with female dogs is preferred. He has displayed leash reactivity with his current family but with consistent training and reinforcement, he is a very well behaved boy. He can be territorial in his home - with structure and guidance, it is not an issue. He has completed a board and train and is trained on both prong and e collar. He knows sit, down, come, place, heel. He has limited-no experience with children and a very strong tail, which makes us think he’d be best fit in a home with no young children. He’s crate trained - and his current family would be happy to give his new family his XL metal crate.

He’s up-to-date on all vaccines, but is not currently neutered as his vet had recommended to wait until he’s 2 years old due to his size. His cherry eye has been examined by the vet and is not impairing his vision or health so has not been corrected.

Due to a family loss and lack of coverage, we will be CLOSED for daycare and camp services this Friday, August 16th. There will be staff on hand to tend to our boarders and for drop-offs/pick-ups. We appreciate your understanding.

We will be sending out a mass email to our current clients as well to inform about the closure. We will resume regular hours on Monday 8/19.

Bella was laid to rest on Monday following her fight against kidney disease. As Alyssa’s first dog, Bella significantly influenced numerous connections in the dog industry and kickstarted Alyssa’s career in dog training. Seventeen years felt too short. Sweet Bella, you will be missed ❤️

So many are confused about this. They see training as something which limits and subtracts from the dog’s life/fun/freedom.

It’s actually the reverse.
Proper training gives the dog a bigger life, more fun, and far more freedom.

The only things it limits and subtracts are the problem behaviors and the anxious/stressed state of mind which are preventing you and your dog from living the best life possible.

🐾🐾 Update on Tapatio’s Behavior Mod Journey! 🐾🐾We are thrilled to share our progress with Tapatio as we continue working on his leash obedience and addressing his leash reactivity. Our latest challenge involves proofing his training in our school environment flooded with distractions, including other dogs. But we’re not stopping there—our next step is to venture into even more public settings while holding the same expectations for Tapatio’s behavior.Tapatio has come a long way since we started this journey, and we’re proud of his dedication and improvement. Here’s our plan for taking him out in public settings and maintaining his progress:1️⃣ Gradual Exposure: We understand the importance of gradual exposure to help Tapatio adapt to different environments. We will begin by selecting public places with fewer distractions and gradually increase the level of distractions over time. This approach will allow Tapatio to build his confidence and reinforce his obedience skills in increasingly challenging situations.2️⃣ Controlled Environment: To ensure Tapatio’s success, we will initially choose public spaces where we have more control over the environment. This might include quieter parks or less crowded areas. By managing the distractions, we can provide Tapatio with positive experiences and set him up for success.3️⃣ Distance and Space: Considering Tapatio’s leash reactivity, we will maintain a comfortable distance from other dogs or distractions initially. Toby ✨Toby the boxer is enrolled in our two week leash program. Now that he knows & understands lead language, we are able to proof it in all in public environments with real world application. He is a very excitable dog that used to jump on others. It was very nice to see him calm & composed when the waitress and others walked by. Most people cannot take their dogs out to dinner with them due to lack of control or manners in a public setting (especially in close quarters). But you can also have this with your dog! The best part about having a reliable off leash trained dog is being hands free & dogs getting way more exercise than leashed walks! We are now offering training hikes for our day camp clients. Drop your dog off at Wayward for the day and we will take them for a hike! If you want your dog to join, please email and learn about our prerequisites for this service 😁 Once there is a certain level of reliability in the training, we will invite owners to learn how to control their dogs off leash as well so you could too enjoy this fun with your dog!

Fear Aggression can be tough for owners • Snoops owners had a hard time finding a facility that would be comfortable taking Snoop so they could take a very much needed vacation. After 4 days of being careful & making sure our interactions are positive and fun for Snoop, he has come around and warmed up! The adjustment period is the most important because that’s where trust is built.

Leash Aggression

Duncan is enrolled in our board and train program for reactivity/leash aggression. Here he is learning how to properly greet dogs in a controlled setting. Instead of being rude and toppling over them, he greeted them politely and in a playful manner. Good boy Duncan!
