PSA: Just because your dog doesn't growl or bite when your child handles them roughly, it doesn't mean they should have to tolerate it.

The onus is on the parent to teach children age-appropriate ways to interact with dogs.

The responsibility of safety is NOT 100% on the dog.

Teach the kids, not just the dogs.

Free feeding can actually cause more harm than good for your dog. Here's some reasons why trainers recommend feeding your dog on a schedule:

Free feeding can increase the risk of resource guarding. This is especially true with multi dog homes as well as homes with children. Dogs shouldn't have to feel stressed when they eat. Here, dogs are all fed in their crates. This also helps with giving them a positive association with their crate!

Free feeding eliminates a reason for your dog to "work". So many dogs are very food motivated. Food can be an excellent tool for training, but why would they work for it if it's left out all the time?

Free feeding also increases the chance of a picky eater.

When potty training, it's much easier to time what comes out by when it goes in.

Free feeding HIGHLY increases the likelihood that your pet will struggle with obesity which is one of the leading causes of health issues in dogs.

A great indicator if something is wrong with your dog is if their appetite suddenly changes. It's easier to determine this if you know how much your dog eats daily. How much you feed your dog can be determined by age, breed, size, and activity level. Structured feeding is also a great way to ensure your dog is getting the proper nutrition each day.

Unless your pet is on medication that needs to be given at a certain time, feeding schedules should work around yours. It does not have to be at the same time everyday.

Josh and Alyssa, Owners of The Wayward Canine, had a successful weekend trialing three dogs of their own scoring high in both the obedience and protection phases.

Training a dog to reach this level demands the ability to understand canine behavior, maintain strong control over triggers and stressors, and foster a positive relationship with your dog throughout the training process. If your dog trainer isn’t accomplishing things with their OWN dogs or isn’t actively testing their work at a more demanding level, it may be time to seek out a different trainer. When looking for a dog trainer, inquire about their achievements with their own dogs and observe whether those dogs appear happy and eager to work with them.

Tapatio in need of a place to call home!

Breed: AKC Registered Great Dane
Color: Merle
Weight: Apx. 150lbs
Height: Apx. 32” floor to top of back
Birthdate: 9/11/22

Tapatio is a loving, cuddly, goofy boy who loves pets and snuggling on the couch. He has great bite inhibition, takes treats/bones/toys/etc. very gently, & no food aggression. He loves carrying around towels/shirts/shoes/toys but doesn’t destroy them. Good with cats and female dogs. Is dominant with other male dogs so a home with female dogs is preferred. He has displayed leash reactivity with his current family but with consistent training and reinforcement, he is a very well behaved boy. He can be territorial in his home - with structure and guidance, it is not an issue. He has completed a board and train and is trained on both prong and e collar. He knows sit, down, come, place, heel. He has limited-no experience with children and a very strong tail, which makes us think he’d be best fit in a home with no young children. He’s crate trained - and his current family would be happy to give his new family his XL metal crate.

He’s up-to-date on all vaccines, but is not currently neutered as his vet had recommended to wait until he’s 2 years old due to his size. His cherry eye has been examined by the vet and is not impairing his vision or health so has not been corrected.

Due to a family loss and lack of coverage, we will be CLOSED for daycare and camp services this Friday, August 16th. There will be staff on hand to tend to our boarders and for drop-offs/pick-ups. We appreciate your understanding.

We will be sending out a mass email to our current clients as well to inform about the closure. We will resume regular hours on Monday 8/19.
