We said goodbye to sweet Elsa this week. These were taken the morning she left for her trek across the country with her new family. Pretty sure that she was “taking in” the Iowa sunrise for the last time. 🥰 She will be missed, but we have already received many photos and videos of her travel (she’s doing great!) and she is already loved by her new family! 🥰😍🥰
🐾 Last, but certainly not the least, we present Miss Orange, Red Rock Golden’s “Fearless” aka “Elsa”!
🐾 This puppy represents the full circle of our breeding program as she will be joining her sister, April, who is from our VERY first litter with Red Rock Golden Retrievers! 💕April will be an amazing teacher for sweet Elsa!
🐾 As we mentioned, we are having some extra time with Elsa while her family celebrates a wedding. She is already learning sit and come, and is having lots of car rides in preparation for her long drive home with her new family!

🐾 Introducing Miss Yellow as Red Rock Golden’s “Evermore” aka “Lacy”.
🐾 This lovely lady made a very long trek to California where she will be playing in the surf with her older sister, Summer, who is from our Apollo x Lotte 2022 litter. According to her new family, Summer has never been happier, as she has welcomed her new half-sister with open paws!

🐾 Presenting Miss Purple as Red Rock Golden’s “Wildest Dreams” aka “Indy”!
🐾 Oh did this girl make us laugh! She is full of s***k and spirit much like her older sister, Palmer, who was from our Apollo x Dolce litter in 2020.
🐾 This puppy is also staying in Iowa and joins her full sister who is now 3 years old!
🐾 Their new mom reports these two are already “besties”. 💕We are sure Palmer will be an excellent big sis and teacher for Indy! 🥰
🐾 As a continuation of our Golden Era theme, Miss Green is Red Rock Golden’s “Folklore” aka “Grace”!
🐾 Along with Miss Pink and Miss Purple, Grace will be staying in Iowa, not too far from us. But she will get to winter in a warmer climate, so she is a lucky puppy indeed!
🐾 Grace’s new family waited a long time for one of our puppies, and we were thrilled to finally be able to share this bundle of joy with them!

🐾 May I present Red Rock Golden’s “Enchanted” aka “Lottie”
🐾 As we mentioned previously, this is the end of our Golden Era, and while it is definitely a difficult decision to end our breeding program, we could not be more happy to end with the Fabulous Five!
🐾 3 of these girls went to families with dogs from our previous litters - one from each of our dams, Aspen, Lotte, and Dolce. So it feels like our lives have somewhat come full circle. 💕💕💕
🐾 It’s been a blessing to be able to work with the amazing families we have placed puppies with over the last 11 years, and this final round of families have been equally amazing!
🐾 And then there was one… Miss Orange is having an extended stay as her new family has a wedding happening! She was a little lost without her sisters but is adjusting well to receiving our FULL attention! She has decided that the fireplace mantle is nice and cool, and officially her new napping spot. We will also still be working with her on crate training and potty training. She has also discovered that the sofa is a wonderful place and enjoys watching The Voice on TV. 😂
🐾 We are also working on “sit”. She has very quickly figured out if we are in the food prep area, that if she comes over and sits, she gets a piece of kibble. We are now starting to incorporate “come” and then “sit” as the next progression.
🐾 Just a quick video of the puppies lapping up the formula from yesterday, and a quick smile from a happy puppy enjoying her bed and play area.
🐾 Last photo was of Miss Yellow who decided the crate was the best place to fall asleep after breakfast and playtime this morning. She was VERY interested in the crate yesterday and finally worked up the courage to enter. We will continue to create positive associations with the crate so it becomes a safe and happy environment for these pups to travel in and sleep.
🐾 We definitely recommend crate training to our adoptive families as they bring home these pups- even if your long-term intention is not to crate the dog at night. Crate training helps with potty training, allows puppies a safe place to retreat if they’re over-stimulated, and is a safe way to travel.
🐾 Sometimes you’re just hanging on for life on Monday mornings!
🐾 Yes, we are still in the weaning phase, which means Dolce does the morning feeding. These girls are doing really well lapping up puppy formula, but they still LOVE their mama best! Not all mother dogs will allow puppies to nurse this long, especially since they have sharp little teeth now, but Dolce still wants to let them nurse. We have the puppies drink formula first, and then let Dolce feed them, which should make them less aggressive and also help to decrease Dolce’s milk supply. We will continue to cut out Dolce’s feedings over the next few days. We have expanded the amount of time between meals to 4 hours, and the puppies have play time and nap in their new expanded play area, in between. 🥰

It’s a bit easier for us to post videos of our puppies on Instagram, so that is our preferred method at this time. Some of our photos and videos have been posting to this page, but not all of them! We are not exactly sure why?!?! 😂
🐾 Dolce gave birth to 5 healthy girls on September 7 with Apollo as the sire. We have decided this will be our final litter of puppies in our breeding program as all of our dogs are “aging out” and our human family is transitioning to becoming “empty-nesters” in a few months.
🐾 While this is a bittersweet moment in time for us, we are grateful for all the wonderful families and friends we have been able to provide puppies for over the last decade+. It’s been such a blessing for us to know that these puppies have gone to wonderful families and we love and appreciate all of our Red Rock Golden’s extended family.
🐾 These puppies are all spoken for and will joining new and existing members of our extended family. 🐾🫶🐾🫶
🐾 I love all puppy ages, but there’s something special about that 4-6 weeks old age where the puppies recognize you as a human they trust and want your attention. 🥰
🐾 We have laughed that these puppies are DEFINITELY chips off the old blocks as they definitely want to be pet/scratched like mama Dolce and daddy, Apollo. Anytime we are around, they come to the edge of the whelping box to make sure we give them the attention they deserve!
🐾 Dolce did let us know last night that she did NOT want to sleep in the puppy room. Apparently, she knew the puppies were sleeping through the night and dutifully woke up at 5:45am this morning to feed them. The humans were a little tired, but the puppies woke up instantly and nursed like champs this morning. I always think that mother dogs should be the model for human mothers-to-be. I would have slept a lot more if I had followed our dams’ parenting skills when our own children were babies! 😂
Is there anything cuter than puppies sleeping on their backs?!? These pups have full bellies and verrrrry relaxed!
🐾When you’re just trying to clean up after the kids, and they won’t leave you alone!
🐾These puppies are definitely NOT starving, but Dolce has to use some defensive moves to get in and out of the box without having puppies attach themselves to her. They can be totally crashed out, and the second they smell her, they are alert and ready to eat! 🤪
🐾 And they let you know they’re awake! I wasn’t able to catch it on video, but yesterday I found all 5 of them sitting up and howling in unison. 😂 It’s so interesting to me how they learn from one another as they explore their new “talents”!
🐾 Can anyone else relate to this??? We spend a lot of time trying to think of AKC registration names for our litters, the last puppies were all named after Beatles songs, but their owners get to choose their “call name”.
But…our adult dogs also have several nick-names as well, and they respond to all of them, I might add! 😂

🐾 Every once in a while we get to reunite with our puppies! This big boy is Cade from our 2021 Apollo x Lotte litter. His family traveled from the Chicago area back to Pella to check out our Tulip Time festival and brought him along. He is definitely a chip off the old block, as he looks a LOT like Apollo at the same age!

🐾 Photographing 6 week old puppies is challenging - to say the least! 😅 Getting ready to send our future owners some photos of these fur babies. These are a few photos that didn’t make the final cut, but we loved them anyway!

Hope you all had a happy Easter weekend! Just a quick look at what we see when we check in on the puppies! They are so excited to see us, and we love that they have bonded with us as their first “humans”!
🐾 Just to show how much the puppies love the kennel they are allowed to play in. Mr. Black took the opportunity to sleep inside it this morning. We should ALL be this relaxed! 🥰
🐾 FREEDOM!!!!! Well, sort of… we officially opened the door of the whelping box into the bigger “play area”. We have a large kennel that the puppies can explore in preparation for their new homes, a potty area, and will eventually have platform beds and a toy area.
🐾 Kennel training is especially helpful in potty training and allows the puppy necessary “downtime”. By allowing the puppy to freely enter and exit the kennel here, they will hopefully assimilate to their own kennels at their forever homes.
🐾 The puppies are being introduced to toys and they love them! So fun to watch them shake and play tug o’ war with one another just like our “big dogs”.
🐾 We’ve officially moved the puppies to feedings every 5 hours during the day. They will stay on this schedule until they go to their forever home. We’ll gradually increase their food intake as they continue to grow.
🐾 4 weeks old today!!! Lotte fed these babies this morning and we followed up with puppy mash (ground up puppy starter kibble with formula) as we’re trying to extend their time between feedings. Lotte will be down to two feedings today, and one tomorrow and then it’s all on us! Puppies were VERY excited to see me this morning, they knew puppy mash was coming! They had some playtime with each other and then the food coma set in and I snapped this pic. 😊

🐾 The puppies are always excited to see Dad (Apollo)! Prior to the video they were barking and jumping at the fence and he gave a brief bark and they immediately settled down. He was “correcting” their behavior, and they GOT IT! 🐾 Many of our puppies go to homes with other dogs and it’s always amazing to see/hear how quickly they bond with their older siblings (or at least learn to respect them if the older dog wants to be left alone 😂) An older dog can be a great asset in helping to train a young puppy - as long as they don’t have bad habits you don’t want to recreate. If they do, make sure you reward the puppy for good behavior (being boring) as much as possible. 😊

🐾 Big day today - 6 weeks old!!! ALSO… and this is really more a gift to we humans- no accidents outside the potty/poo area overnight! You may have noticed in our videos a stray alfalfa pellet or 2, on the ground. While this it an issue for the clean freak in me, it’s virtually impossible to keep the pellets contained. That being said, the puppies are understanding that there is an appropriate place to do their business rather than just anywhere they get the urge. I know we keep saying this, but it’s yet another important step in future potty training for their adoptive families. 🐾 You’ll also note that the puppies are a LOT more active, and vocal. This socializing with siblings helps them to understand boundaries and bite inhibition. We have also introduced squeaky toys which puzzle the pups, but also is a form of assimilation to unusual noises. We are also running the stick vacuum which is a new sound for them as well. The radio you may hear in the background gives a nice variety of voices and music for the puppies to hear so our voices are not the only ones they hear. 🐾 We will also begin the pick process with our adoptive families this week!! We like to wait till 6 weeks as we can truly see their personalities emerge at this stage. Our goal is to set the puppies up for success, as well as their adoptive families, by helping to place the right puppy in the best home for them. 🥰

🐾 Play time!!! The puppies are enjoying their new space and the ability to run (or hop 😊). This usually happens after a feeding when they’ve got a lot of energy! This is also the time where the puppies are actively seeking OUR attention. They want to be held and pet, and are “ankle-biters” at this stage. After playtime, it’s back to the box to nap. We do this to reinforce potty training as typically, puppies don’t like to potty where they sleep. 🐾 The puppies literally RUN to the big kennel in a group when we let them out of the box. Apparently, it’s great fun to pile in there and chew on the bed that’s in there! 😂
🐾 The puppies are being introduced to toys and they love them! So fun to watch them shake and play tug o’ war with one another just like our “big dogs”. 🐾 We’ve officially moved the puppies to feedings every 5 hours during the day. 🐾 It’s been a busy few days around puppy world! The puppies officially have their teeth in and Lotte has definitely started the weaning process- can’t say that we blame her. Those teeth are SHARP! 🐾 So that means we have been mixing puppy formula and individually feeding all the pups out of a bowl. They all quickly figured out what to do and have steadily increased the amount they’re lapping up at each feeding. Tonight we will introduce a “mash” of ground up puppy starter food with their formula. 🐾 This is also the time that we start potty training with the pups. We have been laying down potty pads in their box and these smart puppies have very quickly figured out this is where they are supposed to go! 😁 We will eventually move the pads on top of alfalfa pellets in a tray, and then remove the pads. 🐾 As the puppies get this down, we will gradually increase their play/sleep area.

🐾 Mr. Blue trying to “chew” on mommy’s leg - just a mild correction by Lotte. 😂 🐾 Started to see the first signs of baby teeth pushing through on these guys today. This generally means that Lotte will start to wean them soon. Hard to believe they’ll be 3 weeks old tomorrow!
🐾 And just like that, the puppies are starting to “play” with each other! This is an important part of socialization for puppies, and how they learn to interact within the pack. This is how the puppies will determine who is “top dog”. There is always a pack order that gets established which will help to shape their future personalities, however, the puppies will establish a new pack order when they go to their forever homes.
It’s the stretching that gets me every time! 🥰
Can’t believe these puppies are 2 weeks old already! Lots of changes over the last couple of days- open eyes and starting to gingerly “walk” a few steps at a time instead of army crawling. They are also very much aware when mom steps into the whelping box to feed them! It’s chaos as they try to find a spot to nurse before they get pushed out by another puppy. The pups have to take “turns” at this point since they can’t all fit at once. This video is what taking turns sometimes looks like after the first round. Miss Pink is resting on Mr. Black after getting her fill. 😂
It’s the tail-wagging for me! 🥰 When Lotte’s milk lets down, it triggers these little excited tails! This only happens for about the first week or so, but something that always makes us smile. 😁
Sunning under the heat lamp! Did you know that the puppy pile is nature’s way of stabilizing heat for puppies? Newborn puppies can’t maintain a constant temperature without reflecting heat off of each other, mom, or under a heat lamp. It’s why we sleep with the puppies in our whelping room the first two weeks- to make sure that the puppies stay close to mom.
