I feel like this is such an important topic. With some dogs, adolescence can be the toughest developmental stage! Why is no one talking about this?!
⚠️ Canine adolescence is a stage of development that occurs between puppyhood and adulthood. During this period, dogs go through physical and behavioral changes as they mature and transition from a dependent puppy to an independent adult.
⚠️ Adolescent dogs may become more independent, have sudden mood swings, begin testing boundaries, or show new challenging behaviors. Some dogs may exhibit fear, anxiety, and aggression, or destructive behaviors.
⚠️ It’s a critical period of development that can have long-lasting effects on a dog’s behavior and personality. ADOLESCENT DOGS DON’T just “grow out” of their behaviors! Without proper management, these behaviors can persist into adulthood.
So, what can you do?!
🕺🏼 Expect your teenage dog to test you. Set clear expectations and be consistent with their boundaries and impulse control.
🕺🏼 Be patient and go back to basics! Practice many repetitions of whatever commands your dog has already mastered.
🕺🏼 Get creative with your rewards system.
🕺🏼 Provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Give them structure. Give them a job.
🕺🏼 Take time to understand your dog’s personality and breed traits.
🕺🏼 Have a relaxation protocol in place. Teach your dog to relax and settle!
