It's a Wonder That Cornish Rexes Curly Hair Is a Natural Genetic Mutation

Cornish Rexes get their coat from a genetic mutation through autosomal recessive inheritance.

The curly coat is caused by a recessive allele, so a cat must inherit two recessive alleles (one from each parent) to have a curly coat.

If they inherit only one of the recessive alleles, they are a carrier for curly coat, but they do not have curly coat.

Carriers can still produce a litter of cats with curly coat if they are bred to another cat that either has curly coat, i.e. has inherited two copies of the curly coat allele, or to a cat that is a carrier of the gene.

😻Black Cat Could Make You Rich

In many Asian countries, such as China and Japan, black cats are not only considered lucky, but also attract wealth. That's why you might see a black "maneki-neko" (meaning "waving cat") figurine in Chinese or Japanese restaurants and grocery stores - black cats are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.

And according to Scottish legend, it's good luck to find a strange black cat on your front porch.

That's because black cats bring prosperity, something the Scots seem to take to heart. Recently, a Scottish bingo hall recruited several black cats to improve the luck of its patrons.

In most parts of the United Kingdom, black cats are considered so lucky that some people give them as gifts to newlyweds. In Germany, it's considered lucky if a black cat crosses your path from right to left, but not from left to right. And in other parts of Europe, sailors considered black cats to be extremely lucky to have on a ship - sailors' families would even keep black cats in their homes for double the luck.

Persian cats have a mysterious origin 😸

Although Persian cats can be traced back to the 1600s, their origin story is still somewhat of a mystery. It's generally believed that Persian cats originated in Mesopotamia, which was later called Persia - hence the name "Persian" cats. This country is now known as Iran. Despite this popular belief, some research shows that the genetic makeup of Persians is very similar to cats that originated in Western Europe.

The true origin of Persians may remain a mystery, but one popular theory is that an Italian nobleman named Pietro della Valle brought some Persians back to Western Europe after learning about the breed while traveling through Iran. Similar theories suggest that they were brought to Europe by sailors (who often brought kittens on board for good luck), merchants, or travelers.

Whatever the origin story, once Persians arrived on the western side of the world, they quickly became one of the most popular breeds in the world 🫶🫶🫶
