Please keep your dog away from Florida's lakes, canals, lagoons, and other bodies of water, which are also home to deadly snakes like water moccasins. You will not see them coming. Walk your dog on sidewalks and cleared property away from the water. Safety first! ๐Ÿพ

Note... the Everglades themselves are home to only about 15% of Florida's alligators.

It's the start of toad season again in South Florida, and your pets need your close attention to keep them safe from these poisonous creatures.

We've been lucky not to have many toads around for the last few months, but that's all starting to change as Spring settles in. Please make sure to have a safety discussion with all members of your household, and always make your guests aware.

Also, take a good look outside at your entire property and remove or correct anything that might attract toads such as potted plants that are low to the ground, holes and dips where water might collect, pet food and water bowls, overgrown hedges and landscaping - make sure you can see the bottom 8 inches to the ground.

It's a good idea to make a practice run to the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital. Maybe you haven't been there recently and need to be aware of road construction that might necessitate a change of route.

Please refer to our website page on toads for the basic info you need to know...

โš ๏ธ It's always surprising what pets get into. Make a point to look around your home periodically and correct anything that may be even remotely problematic. Begin with everything that has small batteries or accessible electrical cords. Also, anything with small pieces that could be a choking hazard. Then check for incompatible human food and fruit they could reach if they really tried. Also, enclose any open trash bins in all rooms. Look up all your plants and flowers to check for pet toxicity. Adjusting all those items is a good start!

If you're unsure, please call Pup-Eez to conduct an expert full-home safety check.

A safe home is a happy home.โœ…๏ธ

This is a reminder that shaving your pets won't keep them cooler. Please keep them groomed and brushed, but not shaved.

The hair/fur allows air to circulate close to the skin, which helps with evaporative cooling. This evaporation process absorbs heat from the pet's body, cooling the blood vessels in these areas and reducing the pet's body temperature.

Also, the outer coat can reflect sunlight, helping to prevent overheating. ๐Ÿพ

The subject is... TICKS!๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Please get into the habit of checking your pups for ticks. Ticks transmit over a dozen diseases in dogs and must be taken seriously.

This article describes proper tick removal on a dog:
https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/how-to-remove-tick-from-dog/

Place the removed tick in alcohol and/or a ziploc baggie and dispose of it in an outdoor trash bin. Never risk a tick getting loose inside your home.

There are a number of plants you can add to your own outdoor space to prevent ticks from settling in, as described in this article:
https://www.tomsguide.com/how-to/7-plants-that-repel-ticks-and-keep-them-away-from-your-yard

As they mention, some of these plants are toxic to dogs, so think carefully about where you place them. It is the smell of these plants that keeps ticks away, so placing them somewhat higher and out-of-reach while dispersing them around your property should be just as effective.

You could also periodically apply a non-chemical yard spray like Wondercide or the organic brand EcoSmart. Even though they're pet safe, it's still a good idea to allow it to dry thoroughly, and also relocate worms, slugs, etc. that may quickly surface before allowing your pets back outside.

But that's just your own property, and dogs can easily get ticks as they are walked around the neighborhood, so you must conduct body checks. Aside from protecting your pet's health, the very last thing you want to do is bring ticks into your home.๐Ÿ˜ฎ

If your pup is not already taking a flea/tick preventative regularly, please consult with your veterinarian about various products. It's important to also do your own independent research about anything suggested for your dog (BEFORE giving it to your dog), as some dogs are neurologically sensitive to these products, particularly those taken orally. After all, these are essentially insecticides. Study-up so you are aware of the risks and symptoms associated with these products, enabling you to react immediately if a problem arises. The majority of dogs, however, do not experience issues with these products when used as directed.

You can also research the various natural items to give to or spray on your dog that can be effective against ticks. Just be aware they may be less effective and less consistent, and will require more frequent use. Still, they can be very good alternatives for older or sensitive pups. ๐Ÿพ

There are many wonderful herbs and supplements your dogs and cats can really benefit from. Pictured below are the most popular in 2024, from Dr. Karen Becker, DVM and Rodney Habib, authors of the wildly popular "Forever Dog" series of books.

You can often find some of these supplements combined into singular products by pet supplement companies. Please research before you buy to confirm the quality and reputation of the products.

Most importantly, always check with your veterinarian and conduct your own independent research prior to giving any supplements to your pets, as some may be contraindicated for pets with certain health conditions.

Basic dosages are noted, but dose and frequency can depend on your specific health goal for your pet. ๐Ÿพ
