It can be challenging to practice reward-based training with a small breed because they're lower to the ground. One tip is to use a wooden or plastic spoon (metal can chip a tooth) with soft yummy food on it and let your dog have a lick or two. This way you can deliver a reward faster and not hurt your back.

If you have a small breed puppy (10 months or less), we have one spot left for our small breed puppy class beginning 2/2/25. Fill out this questionnaire to reserve your spot. https://forms.gle/scHcacikyQmYgKGo9

Today our puppy class had our meeting strangers day. The point of this exercise is not only about socialization but awareness of canine body language and navigating consent for both dogs and dog lovers. We'd like to thank our usual crew of volunteers for making this event a success!

Window clings are an excellent tool when it comes to dogs barking at things passing a window. They block what the dog sees while still letting in light. If you rent your home, they are easily removed. Window clings come in a variety of designs and offer opportunities to teach your dog a different behavior. Check out this video on the difference a window cling can make for window reactivity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z6IaPGWLKY

Yesterday, Karen Pryor, a pioneer in positive reinforcement training using a clicker and author of the book Don't Shoot the Dog died. She lived until 91 years of age and lived with dementia in her later years. I'm not a big clicker trainer but took her trainer foundations course and learned so much. I am linking here to a free PDF copy of her excellent book on training and dog behavior. Like my collogues around the world, I am thankful for Karen's legacy.
