❓Trivia Tuesday Answer ❓

This cow had a pyometra! Luckily we can pick up reproductive problems (and pregnancies) on ultrasound. This girl has valuable genetics so the condition will be treated so she will hopefully be able to return to fertility

If you need pregnancy checks, breeding soundness exams, or any other livestock related care please give us a call at 📞 864-337-3758

❓Trivia Tuesday❓

Recently, we had a client ask for a breeding soundness exam on his cow.
She had been palpated over a year ago with a "60-day pregnancy" but no calf ever appeared! 🐂

That's where we came in, on ultrasound of the uterus this was the image we got. Do you know what this condition is? 🤔

🌾 Equine Fescue Toxicity During Pregnancy: What Every Breeder Should Know 🐴

Did you know that fescue toxicity can be especially harmful to pregnant mares? 😱 Fescue grass, when infected with a toxic endophyte fungus, can lead to serious complications during pregnancy. Here's what you need to know to keep your mares and foals safe:

⚠️ Symptoms of Fescue Toxicity in Pregnant Mares:

🔴Prolonged gestation (mares may go beyond their expected due date)
🔴Dystocia (difficult birth) due to weak or poorly developed foals
🔴Placental issues (failure of placental detachment, thickened placenta, red bag)
🔴Abortion or stillbirth
🔴Poor milk production (leading to foal malnourishment)
🔴Reduced fertility in mares

🔬 Why is Fescue Toxicity Dangerous During Pregnancy? The toxic endophyte in infected fescue produces a chemical called ergot alkaloid, which can interfere with the mare’s ability to produce enough milk, properly develop her foal, and even affect the birthing process.

🌱 Prevention Tips for Pregnant Mares:

Avoid fescue pastures in late pregnancy, especially the last 90 days.
Switch to endophyte-free fescue or other safe forage options.
Consult with your vet if your mares are exposed to fescue, as they may recommend management strategies or medication (like domperidone) to help prevent complications.

🐴 Take steps to protect your mares and their foals from the risks of fescue toxicity. Healthy mares mean healthy foals! 💚

🚨Red Bag Delivery in Horses – A True Emergency! 🚨

If you're expecting a foal this season, knowing about red bag delivery could save a life!

🔴 What is Red Bag Delivery?
Red bag delivery happens when the placenta separates from the uterus too soon, cutting off oxygen to the foal before birth. Instead of the normal white amniotic sac appearing first, you’ll see a thick, red, velvety membrane—this is the placenta, and the foal is trapped inside.

⚠️ What to Do
✅ Act IMMEDIATELY – This is a true emergency.
✅ Use clean scissors to carefully cut or tear open the red membrane.
✅Ensure the foal is in the correct position
✅ Pull the foal out quickly, but gently, to ensure it can breathe.
✅ If the foal isn’t breathing, clear its airways and stimulate breathing by rubbing or using a resuscitator.
✅ Call your vet ASAP – Even if the foal seems okay, this is an emergency for both mare and foal! 🚑

☎864-337-3759

⏳ Every second counts! Without fast intervention, the foal can suffocate inside the red bag.

📌 Be prepared: If you have a pregnant mare, keep emergency supplies on hand and educate yourself on foaling risks. Red bag delivery is rare but deadly if not handled quickly.

Share this to spread awareness—it could save a foal’s life! ❤️🐴

She still has a journey ahead of her as she has a very large, traumatic wound to her right front leg but she continues to improve
