Laminitis
Laminitis, often referred to as "founder," is a serious inflammation affecting the tissues connecting an animal's hoof to the underlying bone. While it can affect any hoofed species, it's most common in horses and dairy cattle.
๐ฑ Excessive carbohydrate intake, high fever, toxin exposure, or repetitive concussive forces to the feet can trigger this painful condition.
โ๏ธ Recognizing the signs is crucial: a slow and hesitant gait, reluctance to move, and hot hooves with throbbing arteries.
โ ๏ธ Prevention is key: closely monitor health, regulate carbohydrate intake, control access to lush pastures, provide proper bedding, and avoid forcing horses on hard surfaces.
๐ฉโโ๏ธ Country Creatures Veterinary Care is dedicated to educating and supporting animal owners in preventing and managing laminitis. Let's work together to keep our beloved companions healthy and happy! #VeterinaryCare #LaminitisAwareness

Calf Recovery Position
Did you know?๐ค
โWhile stockmen and veterinarians used to hang or hold calves up by the hind legs and swing them, theoretically to drain fluids out of the lungs; this is no longer recommended and we now advise against these practices.โ
We have since found any fluid coming from the mouth and nose is from the stomach. Swinging or hanging makes it harder for the calf to breath.
So what should you do? ๐ซฃ
โ
Place calf on its sternum
โ
Pull front feet forward to allow chest to expand
โ
Pull back legs towards calfโs ears
โ
Rub the calf vigorously
โ
Stimulate breathing by poking the nasal septum and ear canal
As we learn better, we do better! These tips increase calf survival; watch this video to see a calf take a nice, big, deep breath after being placed in position by Dr.Berr!
