Staying with a short clip year round doesn't necessarily make a difference in keeping a dog warm during cold weather if they're mostly indoors anyway. Snow can also stick to longer hair, which can cause matting that prevents the skin from being able to breathe if not properly taken care of. Princess gets clipped short but wearing a coat for going outside to relieve herself or while going from a warm car to a warm house keeps her comfortable for the brief time she's outside in the cold!

Since Bitzy is reactive around her face, taking extra precautions is necessary to safely groom it. Since a muzzle does not help with faces, working slowly and carefully while firmly holding underneath her chin to clip around her eyes as well as holding her snout and chin to prevent her from biting while combing and trimming with the other hand works!

Simplifying the grooming process when a dog hates being groomed may involve either a short clip or just brush, bath, nails & tidy up to minimize stress while maintaining hygiene as well as coat and nail health. Rusty had been shaved down prior to his first visit here and since he's not a fan of the process, coming for mini sessions to keep his hair mat free until it's time for a full cut helps to stay consistent with him and ensure he's comfortable!!

With de-shed treatments, sometimes more hair comes off after the bath since warm water and shampoo/conditioner helps to loosen the undercoat and dead hair while the dryer blows it out. Olivia was brushed prior to being bathed but brushing after her de-shed bath & blow out removed more hair!

Since Cooper is a screamer for nail trims, it's important to be gentle yet firm so as to teach him that nail trims are a positive thing and to not reinforce his attempts to stop it. Finding that balance to minimize stress while not positively reinforcing dramatic efforts to get out of it (which in turn could amplify the behavior) is crucial!

Dogs can be quick to associate negative experiences with specific activities, such as nail trims with fear or pain if a quick is cut. Oli doesn't like his feet touched and has been more sensitive for nail trims after a quick was accidentally cut at a previous visit. Making it positive by distracting Oli with treats while using a dremel is less stressful for him than nail clippers! Positive reinforcement helps to reinforce calm and cooperative behavior!

Ask about Puppy Intro Sessions! Since today was Sam's first time being groomed, his visit today was more focused on safely getting him through what needed to be done. This included bath & blowout, nails, paw pads, sanitary clip and around his eyes. Adapting to the grooming process is a learning curve as puppies need to adjust to not only the noises and activity within a grooming salon, but also being clipped, brushed, and handled in ways they're not used to. It's much more important to safely get them through the process rather than risk injury or pushing them too far out of their comfort zones over a haircut.
