COMBINATION DEWORMING: THE TIME IS NOW!

One of the most popular Timely Topics by the American Consortium for Small Ruminant Control has been the one about combination treatments: "Combination dewormers: the time is now!" written by Dr. Ray Kaplan, previously at the University of Georgia, now at St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies. The article was recently reviewed by Dr. Kaplan and the publication was updated. This is another important read, because it is the recommended practice for deworming small ruminants and has been for several years.

It is time to be thinking about spring 2025 calves. Do you have a breeding soundness exam set up for your bull yet?
Bull Breeding Soundess Exams (BSEs) are a key piece to a good breeding season. Although, they cannot predict everything that may happen in a season they can let you know your bull is healthy and ready to start the breeding season. It is recommended to get them done 30-60 days before putting the bull in.
Help insure your bull is ready to go this breeding season and call Dr. Cundiff to get your bull's BSE set up. 540-238-7112

Growing, lactating cows have greater nutrient requirements and smaller rumens than mature cows making it difficult for them to meet their nutrient needs with the same diet as the cow.

Ideally, after a calf is born, things go well, and the cow and newborn calf thrive. However, it is important for beef cattle producers to know how to assess calves for subtle signs of distress or trauma that can occur due to a difficult calving.

The calf VIGOR scoring system is a standardized exam developed to help producers evaluate newborn calves and determine whether early intervention measures are necessary.

If you have questions or concerns about avian influenza in your flock contact your local veterinarian or the state veterinary office.

VDACS encourages all backyard bird owners in the state to protect their flocks from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

HPAI is a highly contagious airborne respiratory virus that spreads quickly among birds through nasal and eye secretions and manure. The virus can be spread through interaction between wild birds and domestic birds, flock to flock, equipment, vehicles, and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers. This virus affects poultry, like chickens, ducks, turkeys, and wild bird species such as ducks, geese, shorebirds, and raptors.

Anyone involved with poultry production from the small backyard flock to the large commercial producer should review their biosecurity activities to assure the health of their birds.

These young people are part of the future of the agriculture industry. FFA allows students to learn about and explore all facets of agriculture while they are developing leadership skills. I have fond memories from my days in that blue corduroy jacket and try to give back to the organization. Happy !

This week is , where we celebrate close to 1M young leaders in agriculture. Virginia FFA is a student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems.

‼️IMPORTANT INFORMATION‼️

June 11th, 2023, the FDA is transitioning all antibiotics from over-the-counter to prescription, including oxytetracycline and penicillin. This means things like LA300, Bio-Mycin, penicillin and ToMorrow etc. will no longer be available in farm stores. Current clients with a VCPR already having an annual herd check or visit will not have any trouble with these changes. Dr. Cundiff recommends keeping antibiotics on hand so you can treat in a timely manner if necessary with her advice in case of emergency.

Please note that federal law requires a valid Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship to dispense prescription medications. This means we do recurring work on your farm and have knowledge of how you use prescription medications. This requires one visit per year on your farm where Dr. Cundiff is doing some type of routine work, such as herd evaluations, pregnancy checks, vaccinations, etc. on your farm.

Current clients have nothing to worry about. If you are looking for a veterinarian Dr. Cundiff would be happy to try and help you out. Call Windy Knoll Veterinary Services LLC at 540-238-7112 to get established.

Theileria in cattle is a big deal and there is currently no treatment. The Asian longhorn tick carries the disease and spreads it among cattle. Prevention is key as it can cause large economic loses for cattle producers. If you are not sure what to do about tick control be sure to talk with your vet to develop a plan. The VA cooperative extension has also come up with some great practices to help you get started.

Managing the Asian Longhorned Tick, the vector for Theileria orientalis, in your cattle herd can be difficult. It's a good idea to implement best management practices like regular herd inspection, tick control, and pasture maintenance to reduce the likelihood of disease.
