If you are able to and willing to help with Hurricane relief please consider helping our agricultural community!

Many of our friends and fellow producers in Southwest Virginia were severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. They will be in need of disaster relief support not only in the next few weeks, but also for the next several months as they rebuild and move forward. To help with this, Virginia Cattlemen's Foundation is raising funds to support disaster relief efforts. Donations can be made online through Venmo at https://www.venmo.com/u/vacattlemenfoundation

Thank you again to everyone who has donated to our efforts to support the good people and animals of WNC!!

Updates:

I am in direct contact with NC veterinarian who is updating me regarding specific needs of his clients. Hay and fencing supplies are going to be crucial over the next few weeks.

We also met an amazing person who is spear heading a lot of collections in Burnsville and has a pulse on the local equine community.

So far the small animal vets and shelters have been in good shape.

I am talking to a local veterinarian in Franklin County Windy Knoll Veterinary Services LLC who has large volume hay available and tractor trailers for hauling. I am also coordinating with LG Performance Horses, LLC and Therapy for hay and hauling.

As someone told my friend, this is going to be a marathon, not a sprint.

I am tracking donations and expenses carefully and will have that available for anyone who would like to have a copy. I will continue to update regarding donations and where/how the funds are utilized. If you would like your donation to be tax deductible, Open Heart Farms is taking donations until Wednesday October 9th to contribute to our efforts!

We need to strongly consider the areas of Southwest Virginia and Tennessee that were affected as well, so if anyone has connnections, we would love to help there.

Thank you again. It is humbling to be part of such generosity for our fellow countrymen.

Dr Snively

COMBINATION DEWORMING: THE TIME IS NOW!

One of the most popular Timely Topics by the American Consortium for Small Ruminant Control has been the one about combination treatments: "Combination dewormers: the time is now!" written by Dr. Ray Kaplan, previously at the University of Georgia, now at St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies. The article was recently reviewed by Dr. Kaplan and the publication was updated. This is another important read, because it is the recommended practice for deworming small ruminants and has been for several years.

It is time to be thinking about spring 2025 calves. Do you have a breeding soundness exam set up for your bull yet?
Bull Breeding Soundess Exams (BSEs) are a key piece to a good breeding season. Although, they cannot predict everything that may happen in a season they can let you know your bull is healthy and ready to start the breeding season. It is recommended to get them done 30-60 days before putting the bull in.
Help insure your bull is ready to go this breeding season and call Dr. Cundiff to get your bull's BSE set up. 540-238-7112
