I just finished settling this girl in for the night. Her finder brought her in yesterday when she saw her laying out in her yard not moving for a long period of time, without seeing any physical injuries and after deciding that she wasn't just "playing possum" she brought her inside to warm up until they could find somewhere for her. I'm really hoping she has just gotten her bell rung and is taking time to recover. She is dehydrated, which is to be expected, skinny, and is covered in mites but otherwise doesn't have any visible ailments. I gave her some mush that I'm hopeful she takes to and I'm going to keep her comfortable and monitor her overnight to make a plan for her. She looks rough, but she is allowing care for now so I'm grateful for that.

Let's talk about vaccines in rescue! Rehabbers and rescuers use different vaccines for different species at different times, but the big one we use is a DHPP vaccine or a DHLPP vaccine. These are combo vaccines that are made for both dogs and cats. They protect our furry best friends against distemper, (lepto), hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus!

But what are WE using them for?? Good question! Rehabbers vaccinate raccoons as they grow up to help protect them from these diseases, and mostly distemper, which there is no cure for. It's important to remember that these vaccines aren't made for raccoons, so while this is likely giving them a boost in immunity and some protection against these viruses, they aren't a fool proof protector. With numbers of distemper cases rising every year, we are doing everything we can to combat it.

So the more the better, right? Nope! According to manufacturer instructions, these vaccines are meant to be given on a specific schedule, and *up to* 4 times. After 12 weeks old however, only 2 are recommended. Using any medication against the manufacturer guidelines can be dangerous and lead to resistance in diseases and lower efficacy.

So why am I telling you this? Because I think it's important for our followers to know as much as they can about what we do, and I enjoy talking about topics of which I'm passionate about! So thank you for reading, and remember to make sure your furry family is vaccinated to protect them and keep them safe and with you for as long as possible ❤️🦝🐾

Yesterday morning we took on this poor guy to look after him until he's feeling better and goes to foster, then hopefully a loving home after that! He came from Healing Lotus Animal Rescue LLC and was trapped with their last batch of TNR kiddos. It was decided he couldn't go back outdoors looking like he did, so I offered to give him some TLC here. He has large open wounds behind each ear, indicative of an ear infection that is bothering him so bad he's digging himself open. I'll post a photo of that in the comments. He also has some icky eyes and so along with treating the ear infection, I'm going to make sure we do a snap test, a chip scan, and get him vaccinated before he heads back to foster. So far, he's very nervous but ate like there is no tomorrow and allows some gentle petting. I'm looking forward to getting him feeling better and hopefully turning his life around. ❤️ Thanks for your support so I can easily say yes to animals like this. This is what rescue is; networking and working together to help the lives of each animal we can.

Meet Minnie! Formerly "skinny Minnie", this girl was a transfer from Healing Lotus Animal Rescue LLC because honestly I had been casually looking for another beardie to love after losing two of my oldies over the last year and a half. My hope is that she will be able to go to events with us and join the ambassadors. Keep an eye out for her at upcoming fundraisers!

$5 Friday!! It's been quite a while since we've done a five dollar Friday, friends! But what do your donations go to?????
Every penny goes directly to the rescue fund. This pays for things like food for the animals, straw to keep them warm, toys and enrichment, vet care, new equipment like incubators, bottles, and heating pads in baby season, litter, treats, and more!

Just five dollars from you really adds up and no donation is too small to make a difference! So thank you, from the bottom of my heart. ❤️

Did you know? Ferrets have been domesticated by humans for so long, there are depictions of them from ancient Egypt!! And while they look cute and adorable, they were once used to control rodent populations and their name comes from the Latin word for "little thief"

Happy Monday! Although I've been on intake hold for what feels like forever and I have absolutely no room, I was contacted by some people from Midwest dermatology in Battle Creek. At the end of their day today they went out to the dumpster to discover a mother raccoon who had given up the fight and seven babies all huddled around her. I left work, grabbed my catch pole, my gloves and a kennel, and drove there for what I thought was going to be an easy rescue. Shout out to my day one, Elizabeth Bement who also just got out of work and met me right there to help. For some reason, she's always there for my shenanigans. These seven little guys put up one hell of a fight but one by one we begrudgingly took them all and thanked their mom for keeping them safe.

I do not have space for these raccoons. Like literally, none but I knew that if no help came tonight, chances were they would not be alive in the morning as they were tired and dehydrated and their poor mom had already passed on next to them.

So even though I'm exhausted and even though I won't get much sleep tonight, I Dove into a dumpster for seven baby raccoons who honestly were out of options. The ladies at Midwest were absolutely amazing. It makes it so much easier for me to say yes and go the extra mile and work the extra hours when the finders are so compassionate and caring. This might have been one long ass Monday, but it was also a feel-good one ❤️
