WHAT. A. WEEK.
Retiring Zander last year wasn't easy to do, simply because he is a show dog through and through. Showing with his girl is and always has been his absolute favorite thing to do. He showed only 3 times this year; once in the Breed ring and twice with Kelly in Junior Showmanship.
Bringing him to Nationals, we had no expectations other than allowing him to have fun in the ring again and to see how he stacked up in the Veterans Class. We never in a million years could've imagined the outcome, especially after seeing the absolutely gorgeous competition all week.
It was cold, which is perfect Swissy weather (aside from the rain earlier in the week), and our boy had a BLAST!!! He lights up in the ring and he especially loves a wide open ring (the size you only really see at a Specialty show).
It was a JOY to watch him do what he loves.
It was HEARTWARMING to see him win Best Veteran.
It was UNBELIEVABLE to see him honored with National Best In Specialty Show in such stunning competition.
WOW!!! And THEN, to have his daughter go Best of Opposite S*x to her Daddy...this just doesn't happen...but it did, and oh my gosh, what an absolute HONOR. It's still sinking in - I can't seem to wrap my head around it fully. We are pretty sure that Zander is the first Veteran in breed history to win Best of Breed at a National Specialty.
*Thank you to judge Kimberly Anne Meredith for this truly incredible honor.
*Thank you to Sarah Smith Jensen for your willingness to take Zoey in the ring when there weren't enough hands. We are so grateful and it was beautiful to see Zoey be so comfortable with you! Can't thank you enough.
*Thank you to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America National Specialty committee who did a phenomenal job organizing this year's show. We all saw you working tirelessly at the event, but I also know it's been a year long commitment. THANK YOU!!
*Thank you to our Swissy family for the support. It was beautiful to witness the sheer number of people who were genuinely so happy and excited for Kelly (and us).
*Thank you to our breeders, Kim Woollard (Cherished Swissies) and Janelle Kaiser (Seneca Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs), for your unwavering dedication to this breed that we love and are so passionate about, and for our special family members that we are forever grateful for.
Some other highlights from the week:
*Vermont and the resort were beautiful!
*Getting to spend time with our Swissy family
*Kelly was a rockstar juggling the many dogs she had the joy of showing this week
*Zoey earned her CGCA
*Kelly won the Junior Achievement Award
*Celebrating Kelly's 18th birthday with our Swissy family
*Seeing Kelly try Brace for the first time with Zander & Zoey
*Our team winning the tent decorating contest
*Seeing friends shine with their dogs at the Top 20 Showcase (always a favorite)
*Cherished Swissies winning Breeder's Class
*Witnessing friends excel with their dogs in additional events like weight pull, obedience & rally
Looking forward to next year!!!

Nail trims...no one loves doing them, but I believe they are crucial to preventing injuries.
Did you know that in Chinese medicine it is believed that the length of a dog's nails directly affects his/her overall health?
-Kathy
A great video on why agility dogs in particular but all dogs in general can enjoy great health benefits by their owners keeping their nails trimmed short! Dr. Leslie Woodcock, a specialize of performance dog's rehabilitation shares amazing insights.

My relationship with dogs has at times made me an outcast. At other times, eccentric, rarely the life of the party, and sometimes it’s even made my loved ones jealous. But it has always, always made me feel whole and alive and exuberant. Why? Because the relationship we have with dogs is like none other. It’s raw and unfiltered; unpretentious. It’s REAL. Some have a hard time understanding this because there’s not a lot of verbal communication to be had with dogs, at least not as much as with our human counterparts. There’s a trust that, let’s face it, we don’t get with most humans. As humans we’ve gotten really good at playing the game of being fake. I consider myself a very genuine person, but even I have smiled through pain more times than I can count. Friends and family may not notice, but a dog will. I love that about dogs. They just know, and they act accordingly. Some dogs will pick up on it quicker than others, but they will pick up on your energy and respond. Our boy Zander will see one of his “kids” crying and smother their face with kisses until they are giggling. That’s just one example, and we all have them. Dogs are true companions.
When I was 11 years old and after our 17 year old beagle mix had passed, my parents got me a dog for my birthday. It was the greatest gift for a kid like me. Kirby was so good, and I had her trained really well. But Kirby had SEVERE separation anxiety, and would literally eat and/or destroy everything while we were gone – the Atari, statues, holes in walls, plants, etc. I had Kirby for about 6-7 months when my parents decided they had had enough. Looking back, I can understand, but to me at that age (or any age, really), it was so devastating and traumatic. I never really got over it, but I did desperately long for a dog again. At the age of 18, my wish came true when my then fiancé (now hubby) got me a pup who would live with him and his parents until we got married. I named him Kirby in honor of my first pup. He was my baby, and such a great dog.
1 ½ years into our marriage we got a second dog, and we’ve had at least two dogs ever since. I was nicknamed “The Dog Lady” by the neighborhood kids, as they’d see me working with our dogs in the yard and I would share little nuggets of doggie facts with them.
The years went by and in 2007 at the age of 34 my life was changed drastically when an accident had me suddenly suffering from neurologic symptoms that were debilitating and frightening, to say the least. My family tried to cope with a lot of prayer and some humor, but I had a really tough time accepting all of the things that I could no longer do with my 4 kids, who at that time were between the ages of 11 months and 9 years old. Several surgeries followed, which included spinal surgery, spinal fusion, and brain decompression surgery. Brain surgery is not easy to recover from. I know because I’ve had many surgeries, and when they say it takes 5 full years until you feel like yourself again, they mean it. I was in quite a funk. Not depression, but just a funk. Learning to accept drastic changes wasn’t easy. My way of dealing with constant pain and symptoms is to simply stay busy and try not to think about said pain. Homeschooling 4 kids is good for staying busy. So is travel soccer, which 2 of our kids are involved in, as well as volunteering. As the kids have grown up and their need for me changes, I find myself reflecting on what has gotten me through the past 11 years. My faith and family and friends are first and foremost. My husband has paced in more surgical waiting rooms than anyone should ever have to. But beyond them, it’s my “boys”. My dogs. The three dogs we have now joined our family after my health issues started, and each one has brought me a bit further out of my funk and into my”self”. To some, this may sound silly, but I KNOW that to others, this will make total sense. For the way they have helped me to recover, I feel like I owe them. For their loyalty and companionship – they are amazing.
I’ve learned so much through the years. I’ve often thought back to my first dog Kirby and felt like we failed her…but I was 11 and my parents didn’t KNOW what to do with her. It was that fear of failing another dog that led me to wanting to know more. I’ve read more dog books than all other subjects combined. I’m fascinated by them – we really don’t give them the credit they deserve. They are smart…so smart and I love seeing the ways people are using them for not only police work, but therapy work, sniffing out cancer, working farms, brace dogs, and the list continues to grow. I love observing the different breeds and understanding their purpose. And if you have a mutt, you better believe I’m going to be trying to figure out what breed mixture he/she has going on.
So many dogs are surrendered every year to shelters or rescues, and the majority of the time, it’s due to behavioral issues. Behavioral issues that perhaps could be avoided if the dogs had the exercise, socialization and mental stimulation that they need. By adding training classes to our daycare, we hope to eliminate the need for re-homing and help our local families to enjoy quality time with their beloved pets, perhaps snuggling together on the couch at night after a long day, as opposed to chasing a mischievous pup who’s crazed and getting into everything after being crated or alone all day.
This daycare is my way of giving back to the community, but especially to our beloved friends who deserve all of the fun, play time, structure, training and love that we can possibly give them. They don’t have enough time on this earth as it is, and I’d love the opportunity to get to know your pups and spread some love while you are at work or running errands. They don’t deserve to be home…alone…all day. I’m sure you’ll agree.
