Available for an In-barn lease in a Hunter/Jumper program. Dancer is a good step-up horse for someone coming out of a lesson program and wanting to improve skills on the flat and over small jumps. He is most suitable for someone already working at the walk/trot/canter and is a good teacher for a rider wanting to jump crossrails to 2’ and hack out on the trails. Dancer starts out on the lazy side but has his own motor once he’s warmed up. Great on trail. Show opportunities are available on the local and “B” circuit. Because of his smaller size, he is best suited for a rider 5’5” and under. Lease terms depend on skill level of rider. Lessons are required as part of the lease.
No off-site lease available, only In-barn.

Good reminders both at shows and at home. Trainers are passionate about what we do and go out of our way to ensure the safety and satisfaction of riders. But there are some things beyond the scope of our job that we just can’t do. And we do need after hours time off and an occasional vacation so we don’t burn out!

Welcome to Trainer Tuesday! Each week we ask trainers a question and gather their answers for you. These trainers have a range of experience, backgrounds, and focus points of their programs, so the answers have as much variation as you would expect and also probably much more similarity. This week....

BY PONYMOMAMMY The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. So I give you some of my favorite pearls of wisdom, in no particular order. Some of these are from trainers of mine, both past and present, some are widely recognized from BNT, some have nothing to do with horses […]

Sam is still looking for his new person to do an In-Barn half-lease. He is suitable for a stronger, experienced rider who has ridden Jumpers and/or Dressage. While he is quite simple to ride & handle, he can be strong and has a little spook in him. He is the absolute sweetest on the ground. There are no show opportunities with Sam. He prefers to win in his lessons at home, but is too nervous to show anymore. He just needs someone to give him the attention, head hugs and all the carrots he deserves. He is my absolute favorite but as the trainer’s horse I have to put him last every day. Please email Alycia if interested in trying him: [email protected]

100% !! I didn’t write this, but I try to teach it everyday.

This really resonated today… this is a hard industry, people are hard to please, horses are easy to please but can’t be machines for people, the sport is not a fair playing field. Income plays a huge factor in many aspects, but…. If you’re willing to put in the time, stop making excuses about the horse or the tack or the judge or what have you… this sport is magical! It gives timid kids confidence, it gives troubled kids support, it gives over-confident kids humility, and above all it teaches compassion and kindness for the animals if done right. Enjoy the process and let yourself learn💞

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.
2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…
3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..
4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.
5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...
6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.
7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.
8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.
9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

*thank you to whoever wrote this! Not my words, but certainly a shared sentiment!

“In riding a horse, we borrow freedom” - Helen Thompson

Rider and Trainer Alycia Otte has spent the last 18 years training, showing, and teaching professionally. She has worked on both the West Coast and East Coast in prominent show barns with horses and riders of all ages and abilities. She prides herself on adapting her teaching and communication to each individual to ensure students get the most out of each lesson. While she challenges each rider with exercises to better themselves and their horses, she keeps her focus positive and encourages riders to practice patience, kindness and self-discipline along with proper equitation and complete horsemanship.

Alycia began showing as a junior rider in both Hunter Seat Equitation and Western Pleasure. While attending the University of Massachusetts she rode with the equestrian team and honed her skills in show jumping and barn management. She continued riding as an amateur until 26, when she began riding and teaching for top show barns throughout the United States. Alycia rode professionally in Southern California and Oregon where she taught and showed extensively in AA and local circuits. After moving to the East Coast, she spent much of her time working with Sue Lyman to perfect her style of riding Show Hunters. She also expanded her riding into 3-day eventing while working under Olympic Bronze Medalist Nina Fout in Middleburg, Virginia.

Alycia has settled in beautiful Northern California where she has spent the last two years working at one of Sacramento’s top Equitation and Show Jumping barns. While she continues as a freelance rider, Alycia has made the decision to step back and have a smaller program of her own. This will allow more quality time with each horse and student both at home and at shows. However, showing is not required if you ride with Lotus Sport Horses. If you simply want to learn how to ride safely and correctly without the pressure of showing, she is more than happy to help you fulfill your goals. No goal is too small!
