Do you know the dangers of Endocrine Disease in your horse?

Two of the most common endocrine disorders in our equine partners are Cushing's Disease (PPID) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Resistance. Some of the major issues associated with these disorders go way beyond a shaggy coat or a chubby looking horse and might include:
* Laminitis / Founder
* Recurrent Hoof Abscesses
* Poor / Slow Wound Healing
* Depressed Immune System
* And more...

Fortunately, both of these endocrine diseases can be diagnosed through a simple blood draw!
To help raise awareness, for the month of September, we are providing: 50% Off Cushing's/ACTH and Glucose/Insulin testing! Call or Email today to take advantage of this savings as this program is only available through 9/30.

The International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Conference has been taking place in St. Louis, MO the past few days and we were honored to have our doctors presenting at the conference. Dr. Laura Weintraub presented her research on the effects of iv fluids prior to exercise in endurance horses and Dr. Langdon Fielding was asked to give a series of 6 lectures on emergency/critical care!
We are proud to announce that this year Dr. Langdon Fielding received the Educator of the Year award! This is the highest honor for equine veterinarians in this organization and reflects his commitment to training and bringing new research to the profession. Dr. Fielding is uniquely boarded in both equine sports medicine and equine emergency medicine. Much of his research and clinical practice involves the management of horses that become sick or injured during training and competition. International recognition for our emergency medicine program at Loomis Basin Equine is a great honor and we are excited to share this news with you!
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Fielding on this once in a lifetime award 🥇

Looks like another hot weekend ahead! 🥵
How is your horse handling this ongoing heat?
As you’d expect, unfortunately, we’ve been seeing a lot of colics but we are also seeing issues with our patients with Cushing’s (PPID) and EMS/insulin resistance. Horses with Cushing’s often sweat excessively and both Cushing’s and EMS/IR horses often drink and urinate excessively.
It’s important to watch your horse’s water consumption not only to make sure they’re staying adequately hydrated but also to watch for over consumption and frequent urination.
If you have concerns about your horse’s health during this heat, or related to these endocrine disorders, or any other equine health issue - please always feel free to contact us!
For regular appointments or emergencies we’re always here for you❤️

Dr Diana Stolba and Dr Diane Rhodes are in Lexington Kentucky for a couple of days, representing LBEMC (and our medical group as a whole) at OEPS event (Opportunities in Equine Practice Seminar). It’s so important to support groups like these that help vet students and practicing vets find opportunities in the veterinary field. The number of veterinarians, and specifically large animal veterinarians, has been on the decline so we want to do all we can to help keep our vet population healthy and thriving ❤️

We are wrapping up our Sand Colic awareness month this week! This can be dangerous form of colic as sand can lead to painful GI irritation and even impactions that may require surgical correction if left untreated!

❤️‍🩹As a quick review…
Some of the signs and symptoms might include: Intermittent loose or watery manure, low grade fever, weight loss, poor hair coat, intermittent colic.

If you are seeing any signs of sand ingestion and possible sand colic in your horse, please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help your horse feel their best!
🚨X-Rays are the best way to not only see if your horse has ingested sand but we can also see how heavy the sand burden is.
⭐️To help raise awareness about Sand Colic and make diagnosis more affordable we are providing 2 abdominal x-rays for $175. *Please see the flyer in the photos for more details and contact us before August 31st to take advantage of this program!

We saw another case on emergency this week that we thought you might find interesting.

Dr. Thomas Kuhn saw this mare after her owner noticed that she was acutely lame Friday morning after being fine Thursday evening. She was found to have a foreign body penetrating her left front coronary band with swelling on either side.
Upon examination a twig of approximately 4 cm was found protruding just above her hoof wall. The mare was quite sore but Dr. Kuhn was able to palpate the area to check for joint effusion. Although it is an area of great risk, due to the proximity to the coffin joint, the offending foreign body did not seem to have invaded the joint capsule. The area was clipped, cleaned, and the twig was removed.
The area was blocked with a numbing agent and further cleaning and flushing was performed as well as additional investigation with x-rays.
Joint infections are always a great risk with penetrating wounds and when splintering foreign bodies are involved it does complicate things further. We are pleased to say that this mare is doing well and is being closely monitored. We are hopeful for an uneventful recovery 🙏❤️

Sorry it’s a little gross but we have an interesting success story for you to enjoy…

Shafiq, an Arabian gelding, was seen by his primary care veterinarian for respiratory noise and increased breathing effort. He was then sent to a second vet for for scoping, then ultimately was referred to LBEMC for an endoscopic exam and a possible foreign body in the pharynx.

Shafiq was sedated and an endoscopic exam was performed by Dr. Alex Bridges. The exam showed a very large foreign body embedded at the base of the left arytenoid and vocal fold. During the exam, moderate inflammation of the epiglottis and arytenoids, as well as discharge, were present. Forceps were used to successfully remove the offending object… A very large foxtail! 😱
Dr. Bridges took the time to check for more foreign bodies as she completed her exam but thankfully no more were seen.

We’re so happy we could help make this case a success story as Shafiq is now on the road to recovery!

Cushing’s Disease in horses, also known as PPID, is seen in as many as 25% of horses over the age of 15 years old, and though it is far less common - it has been documented in horses under the age of 10. Though there is no cure for Cushing’s Disease we are very fortunate to have an excellent medication to help treat it/keep it in check…
Prascend (Pergolide) is the most proven treatment and we are thrilled to be able to provide you with 10% off this important medication! This is a very limited supply so we are only able to offer this on up to 60 tabs per horse and only until sold out or August 31st (whichever comes first)!

To order your horse’s supply or if you have questions about Cushing’s and your horse, please contact us at 916-652-7645 or [email protected]

08/02/2024

As the grass dries up, and gets short causing the landscape to become more barren, we are seeing more and more cases of sand colic.

Unfortunately, sand colic is common especially in late summer and early fall. Sand colic isn’t just due to sand but really any ground matter our horses might ingest (sand, DG, dirt, etc). When grass is short or no longer present, our horses pick up ground matter as they attempt to graze. The ground matter builds up in their GI tract causing irritation, inflammation, and in some cases even blockages!

Since abdominal X-rays are the best and most accurate way to assess your horse’s sand load, during the month of August we are providing 2 lower abdominal X-rays for just $175.

If you’re concerned or have questions about sand colic and your horse, call or email us today to schedule your horse’s appointment!

We are saddened by the fires burning across our beautiful state and are so thankful for the firemen, police officers, and many others who are on the front lines. As always we want to do everything we can to help horse owners and their beloved equines.
LBEMG has a number of facilities that provide boarding for horses and at any given time we have a certain number of open stalls throughout these locations. Each time there is a natural disaster, we do our best to open our facilities to as many horses as possible. If you or someone you know have a need for temporary evacuation boarding for your horse please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate you 🙏

How is your horse handling the heat?

With these extended periods of warmer than average temperatures, it’s important to recognize signs of heat stress in your horse. Here are some common signs:

* Re**al temperatures above 103 F.
* Increased heart rate (average resting heart rate is around 40 beats per min)
* Increased breathing rate (average resting respiratory rate is around 20 breaths per min)
* Profuse sweating
* Lethargy
* Dehydration (Try a skin tent test. If the tenting lasts several seconds after pinching the skin of the neck or shoulders your horse may be dehydrated)
If you’re seeing any of these signs in your horse or you have concerns about how they’re handling the heat, please always feel free to contact us. We provide emergency services in clinic and on ranch call 24/7, 365 days a year❤️‍🩹

It’s National Farriers week so we want to take a moment to give a little extra thanks to all the hardworking farriers! They have a difficult job that’s hard on their bodies but we are so grateful for what they do.
Be sure to take some time today to thank your farrier for helping to keep your horse happy and comfortable… and if you have a farrier appointment in this heat be sure to show them extra care by providing shade, a fan (if they like that), and maybe something cold to drink.

The 4th of July is almost here so we want to share with you a few Safety Tips for Horses and Fireworks.

⭐️ Find out what events are scheduled in your area and communicate with neighbors to find out if they plan to set off fireworks at their home / near your property.

⭐️ Keep horses stabled or sheltered to keep them from spooking and possibly getting out of their enclosure. Check the area they’ll be housed in for anything they might hurt themselves on if they become panicked.

⭐️ Play music for them to help muffle the sound of fireworks.

⭐️ Keep the lights on to help make the light from fireworks less bright.

⭐️ Be kind and keep in mind that even if your horses and pets are not disturbed by fireworks some animals are.

⭐️ If your horse (or pets) are wary about the sight or sounds from fireworks, talk to your veterinarian about the use of calming agents to help them through the celebrations.

It’s always good to plan ahead so we hope you find these tips helpful! Be sure to share this info with your friends and contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or if you think your horse might need something prescribed to help keep them calm❤️

Did you know that lameness due to hock joint pain is not just a problem for aging horses?

Here are just a few of the issues we see that can cause hock pain and lameness in our horses:
⭐️ OCD (Osteochondritis dissecans) - often seen in young horses that grow quickly
⭐️ Traumatic Arthritis - occurs after an acute injury at any age
⭐️ Osteoarthritis - progressive deterioration of joint cartilage in any area of the hock joint(s)
⭐️ Bone spavin - degenerative arthritis of the smaller hock joints. Often seen in older horses and commonly causes hindlimb lameness.

If you are noticing any changes in gait, reluctance to work, or other signs of hock pain in your horse or if you just want a baseline for future comparison, this is a great time to take advantage of this program and Save 50% off on 4 X-rays of the hock(s)!
